CELEBRATING HOMECOMING - Bay Shore High School’s 2019 Homecoming celebration was another huge success! The day began with the traditional parade of floats featuring a themed float from each grade level at the high school. After the parade, the community gathered at the fan festival. The Athletic Sponsors served hotdogs and beverages while kids ran in the fields and enjoyed the bounce house.

Later in the day, the crowd cheered the football team as they played against Brentwood.

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they are bringing the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Each event has been going great, with up to hundreds of guests each night! The remaining events will run on October 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. On Halloween, their event will be kid-friendly! There will be no actors and walk through tours of their haunted house will be given.

The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a nonprofit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, nonmedical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

Thomas, Team Mission United Runner When Thomas DeKenipp, of Bay Shore, enlisted in the U.S. Army he took to running and discovered he had a strong lung capacity.

Within months, he became the leader of his troop’s group runs, setting the pace and keeping his fellow soldiers motivated.

Thomas served in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Combat Aviation Brigade as a helicopter crew chief and an in-flight mechanic for six years. Upon active duty retirement, he continued to serve as a civilian employee on the Army base in Afghanistan. When he returned to the States, this veteran struggled to make his military skills useful in the traditional workplace.

Despite these obstacles, Thomas was self-driven and found a new career path as a mechanical engineer for Long Island-based CPI Aero where he works on a variety of military aircraft programs.

Today he continues to be selfdriven as a member of Team Mission United, training to run his first marathon. He is running to help other

To: All Interested Agencies, Groups, and Individuals This is to give notice that the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR), an office of the New York State Housing Trust Fund Corporation (HTFC), has received an application from the Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division to fund the Fire Island National Seashore – Burma Road Repairs Project (hereinafter, the “Proposed Activity”) and is conducting an evaluation as required by Executive Order 11988 and Executive Order 11990 in accordance with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Renewal (HUD) regulations (24 CFR Part 55).

There are three primary purposes for this notice. First, to provide the public an opportunity to express their concerns and share information about the Proposed Activity. Second, adequate public notice is an important public education tool.

The dissemination of information about floodplains and wetlands facilitates and enhances governmental efforts to reduce the risks associated with the occupancy and modification of these special areas. Third, as a matter of fairness, when the government determines it will participate in actions taking place in floodplains or wetlands, it must inform those who may be put at greater or continued

The Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, the sub-recipient, applied for Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funding to improve the aggregate surface of Burma Road between the Fire Island National Seashore Lighthouse Checkpoint and Kimset, Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York. The length of road that will be improved by the Proposed Activity is approximately 0.57 miles. Burma Road is the only east-west road between the Lighthouse Checkpoint and Kimset, a vital access route for emergency vehicles. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy substantially damaged Burma Road.

Since then, minor repairs have helped keep the road in passable condition, but longerlasting repairs are needed.

This Proposed Activity will strengthen the road bed with hard packed sand and an aggregate of sand and stone, established at an elevation and alignment that will resist flooding and erosion in the future. Other miscellaneous work such as ditch clearing, and signing will take place as part of this action. The Proposed Activity will take place within the footprint of the existing access route.

Heavy equipment including trailer trucks, road graders, excavators, and payloaders will be used to complete the Proposed Activity. All work, including staging areas, will take place on previously disturbed areas of the access route.

The Proposed Activity will result in approximately 0.2 acres of temporary impacts and 1.8 acres of permanent impacts in the 100-year

6 Tricks For Storing Halloween Treats Halloween is a favorite day for many children and even a number of adults.

Halloween offers revelers the opportunity to dress up in costume, play tricks on unsuspecting individuals and cap off the day with treasure troves of candy.

Approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy is sold each year in the United States. Around 90 million pounds of that is chocolate. The National Retail Foundation notes that more than two billion dollars is spent on candy come Halloween. But most of that candy will never be eaten. Many households take in more candy than they know what to do with on Halloween. Couple that with any leftover candy that may not have been grabbed by trick-or-treaters, and that’s quite a bounty of lollipops, chocolate bars, candy corn and taffy to manage.

Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve treats long after Halloween has come and gone.

1. Go nutty first. Nuts and oils will not last as

long as some other candy ingredients.

Consume candy that is full of nuts first. You can try freezing candy containing nuts, but there is no guarantee the texture will remain the same upon thawing.

2. Keep an eye on chocolate.

Chocolate needs to be kept under cool conditions to prolong its shelf life. The National Confectioners Association says dark chocolate can be kept for one to two years if wrapped in foil and stored in a cool, dark and dry place, such as a pantry.

Milk and white chocolate have a more limited storage time of no more than eight to 10 months. Hershey’s does not recommend putting chocolate in the refrigerator, as doing so can affect texture.

3. Candy corn can endure. This symbol of the season is a durable treat. If left in the original and unopened packaging, candy corn can last a few years. The manufacturer of Smarties says that its candy can last up to three years if unopened. The cooler and drier the conditions for storing the candies, the better.

4.

Keep original packaging. The wrappers used to house the candy were designed to keep it fresh. Candy that has been exposed to the elements will degrade faster. When original packaging is unavailable, glass or plastic containers with airtight lids can keep Halloween candy fresher, longer.

5. Manage moisture.

Candies like mints, caramels and hard candies can absorb moisture. They should not be mixed with other candies that can lose moisture, such as fudge and creamy confections.

The NCA notes that hard candies can stay hard if sprinkled with finely ground sugar and stored in airtight containers.

6. Use candy in other ways. If eating chocolate bar after chocolate bar becomes tiresome, repurpose candy in different recipes. Chocolate can replace chips or morsels in cookies. Use hard candies to garnish cakes. Melt down caramels to use for ice cream toppings or chop up nutty candies to make your own sundae toppings.
