group of students from St. Anthony’s High School made their way into the hearts of children in the Department of Pediatrics at Good Samaritan Hospital by making and donating superhero pillows. Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

True Colors By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if no one was watching? What would you say if no one was listening? These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through.

This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden.

They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style.

Especially with the current state of affairs in this nation, more care needs to be taken to respect one another, to pause a moment and appreciate the fact that, no matter the differences in our political, religious or societal views, we are all cut from the same cloth – and a little thing called humanity goes a long way.

So, take heed the next time someone is looking to engage. Draw in a deep breath, form a coherent thought, give it a second… and decide whether expressing your opinion is worth the potential repercussions. Sometimes, those true colors are not so black and white as we may think.

Suffolk County Legislator To Barraga is partnering again this year with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) to collect NEW school supplies to fill back packs for children in need. LICH will distribute backpacks and school supplies for up to 5,000 children in need on Long Island.

On August 23rd, they will begin giving out supplies at an annual event “Back Pack Pirates Summer Festival”, a one-day summer camp experience for up to 450 children from homeless shelters.

Every child deserves to start their school year with the tools they need to be successful.

Individuals looking to help with this very worthy cause can bring their items to the West Islip Public Library located at 3 Higbie and place them in the collection box in the library’s lobby.

The St. Anthony Supers was established in the 2015-2016 school year

They meet once a week to make the superherothemed pillows, with their personal sewing machines then deliver them to the children in the Department of Pediatrics at Good Samaritan.

“They did some research,” says Pegeen McGowan, Senior Vice President Internal Audit & Compliance for Catholic Health Services and the mother of Hannah, “and felt that pillows would make hospitalized children feel special and provide comfort at the same time.”

The students came to Good Samaritan to present about 50 of the 12-inch pillows to the children, says Kathleen Fenton, Director, Child Life Program. She says the children use them all the time for emotional and physical support.

“They hold them against themselves for abdominal support after surgery. It’s very helpful for them.”

Fenton says that when children are hospitalized, staff looks for way in which to help them feel comfortable and in safe hands. The pillows are used by the child life team, doctors and nurses.

“These pillows celebrate our ‘superheroes’ that had surgery and are encouraged to be out of bed and moving to assist in healing. The pillows can be seen throughout the hospital being hugged by the children as they walk to the playroom and off the unit for tests and procedures.”

Fenton commends the students at St. Anthony’s for remembering the children who may be having a difficult time and adds that their support of Good Samaritan’s hospitalized children and their families is often the best medicine of all.
