The Best & The Brightest By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists.

This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the

magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge.

This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees.

To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments.

It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin

with, to pursue a career that many seem to frown upon, for considerably less money than other, far less impactful, careers. Crazy, right? Not when you step back and take stock of a crowd like that, on a night like that, and realize that, yes, it’s all worth it.

Congratulations to all the winners, once again. I can only hope that, one day, I will be fortunate enough to stand among you. ‘Til then, I consider myself extremely lucky to be a mere observer, soaking in the inspiration from those who have come before me.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

SHELTER DONATION - The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center recently received a large and much-needed donation of assorted pet food, treats, toys, and cleaning supplies. The donations were collected by Live.Love.Bark Dog Rescue Inc., the shelter’s non-profit volunteer group, who recently teamed up with Bay Shore Pathmark to collect donations from the public and raise extra funds. Along with the material donations, a monetary donation of $350 was collected and will be used to purchase specialty foods and items for animals with special needs residing at the shelter.

Summer Enrichment Series The Town of Islip Youth Bureau’s community agency, Youth Enrichment Services (YES), provides structured, quality Summer Enrichment Programs and a wide variety of youth development and delinquency prevention programming such as: Work Readiness Skills, After-School Programs, Youth & Family Counseling, Leadership & Community Service Opportunities, Violence/Gang/Bullying Prevention, Tutoring & Homework Help, Leisure Time Activities, Cultural Arts and AntiBias Programming. programs are safe and fun for youth and a wonderful resource for parents.

Through providing programs that are proven to be effective, the Town of Islip Youth Bureau enables Islip’s youth to be better prepared for responsible citizenship and to realize their personal potential.

Half Day and Full Day Summer sessions are available for youth in grades K-6.

Program sites include; the West Islip Community Center on Higbie Lane and the Brentwood West Middle School on Udall Road in Bay Shore. Other locations are being considered, as well.

These youth programs will incorporate fun AND learning; featuring academic enrichment, physical fitness, art & music education, cultural exposure, leisure time, field trips, theater & drama, self-esteem and character building activities and much more!

A separate field tripbased program called “Summer Fun” will be available for youth in grades 7-9. This program will feature high interest activities and excursions including; bowling, ice skating, roller skating, walking clubs, parks, health & wellness, art &

music, cultural exposure and programs aimed to meet the particular needs and interest of adolescents.

Quality, research-based Summer Enrichment Programs, like those provided by YES, show documented gains in academic learning and growth in students’ social skills. Don’t have your child experience a loss of academic growth over the summer or “backtrack” and start the new school year at a disadvantage. Islip Youth Bureau’s Summer Enrichment Programs emphasize both academic and social components which are documented

EXHIBIT UNVEILED - The unveiling of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame’s exhibit was recently held at MacArthur Airport. Portraits and displays of prominent athletes, coaches, and other sports personalities that made a name for themselves in the Islip community now line the walls along the path that travelers take while embarking and disembarking aircraft. The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame used to be housed in a permanent location, but was forced to close due to a lack of funds. Now the Hall of Fame organization is establishing exhibits at various locations throughout Suffolk County. The men and women featured at the MacArthur Airport exhibit are all specific to Islip Town, but the Hall of Fame’s focus is on the accomplishments of Suffolk County athletes as a whole.

Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest singleday food drive, an annual event in association with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), United States Postal Service and food banks across the country.

Locally, all proceeds benefit Island Harvest in supporting more than 300,000 Long Islanders

The United Way of Long Island (UWLI) has awarded a grant of $20,000 to Family Service League (FSL) under its Military Family Assistance Project community initiative.

This grant will address the immediate financial needs of Long Island’s post-9/11 military families. These funds are used to help military families with a range of immediate financial needs, such as child care expenses, auto repairs and moving expenses. FSL has been operating this program with funding from the UWLI since 2011.
