Rebecca from Mineola is motivating the local community to find cures by participating in the Crohn’s & Colitis Long Island’s Take Steps walk.

This year’s walk takes place on Sunday, June 12th, at 1 p.m. at Marjorie Post Park.

The Saga of Squeegee By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Beautiful turquoise betta seeking small, non-disruptive companion to cohabitate within fully equipped tank.

Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus.

So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared.

In short, not well.

His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale.

Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with?

In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.”

Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo!

Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and other officials announced Tuesday that the county’s half marathon has been designated as international and national championships for the intellectually disabled.

The Catholic Health Services Suffolk County Marathon, Half Marathon and newly added 5K will take place October 30th, starting and ending in the village of Patchogue.

“We are pleased that our race will serve as an opportunity for all athletes to demonstrate their skills,” County Executive Bellone said.

Sixteen exceptional students were honored recently with the George Farber Outstanding Student Award. Each of the honorees was celebrated for a variety of remarkable traits including talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards.

The scholars received the award during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset.

“These students exemplify the very best of Nassau BOCES,” District Superintendent Dr. Robert Dillon said at the awards ceremony. “Each of them embodies the true spirit of George Farber. They have shown kindness to other students, exhibited an excellent work ethic and demonstrated outstanding commitment.

They have eagerly shared their knowledge and made contributions to their communities. Their collective stories are an inspiration to us all.”

Outstanding students have been earning this prestigious award since 2007. It is a memorial to former Nassau BOCES

Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students at Nassau BOCES was surpassed only by his love and care for them.

Farber was the longestserving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009.

In 2016, NYSSMA, the New York State School Music Association, celebrates its 84th year as the largest state affiliate of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

NYSSMA’s mission is to advocate for and improve music education across New York State by promoting and producing

appropriate activities and programs for its membership and students in member school music programs.

This year, NYSSMA’s Spring 2016 Solo & Ensemble Festival in Babylon was filled with high notes, from trumpeters to flautists and vocalists to violinists.

Several students from Saints Cyril

and Methodius in Deer Park attended this year, with shiny instruments and clean music sheets in hand. They were ready for the day of auditioning and did their school proud with top marks.

New Chair Welcomed

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently installed its new Chair of the Board of Directors, Donna Smeland, at its 48th Annual Meeting at Camp Edey in Bayport. Ms. Smeland has served as a Board Member on the Girl Scout Board of Directors since 2012 and has also served on several Board committees including Board Development, Golf Classic and Strategic Learning.

Ms. Smeland is a freelance producer, with more than 20 years of experience in the entertainment

industry, and has produced countless hours of television for such networks as ABC, NBC, PBS, MTV, VH1, IFC, Sundance Channel and Comedy Central. She was an active Girl Scout from Brownie through Senior level, as well as an adult volunteer, and attributes much of her success to the opportunities presented to her through Girl Scouting.

“We are delighted to welcome Donna as our new Chair of the Board,” says Yvonne Grant, President & CEO for Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “Donna’s

passion and enthusiasm for Girl Scouting will be a tremendous asset to our council’s goals and initiatives in Suffolk County.”

Going Tropical The Friends of Mercy Medical Center will host their famous Luau on Thursday, June 16th, at the Ocean Club in Atlantic Beach from 7 to 11 p.m.

This casual, fun evening will be a great night you won’t want to miss.

Hawaiian-inspired food, including surf & turf and exotic cocktails. The music is sure to energize the crowd, and tickets are $100 per person. “Reverse Raffle” tickets, whereby the last 12 tickets pulled are the winners, are available for $100 each.

The final ticket pulled will be awarded $7,000!

Only 200 raffle tickets are sold for the evening, so reserve yours early! Raffle tickets can be purchased by individuals or by groups.

The drawings will be held throughout the Luau, and winners need not be

The proceeds from the Luau will go towards the planned expansion and renovation of Mercy Medical Center’s Patio Grill. Located on the main floor, renovation plans include the doubling of dining space, new
