Browsing The Archives By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last week marked another mini-milestone in my time here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, my 450th In Step column. I have to admit, I only realized this a few days ago while randomly perusing the archives, brainstorming for ideas, and I suppose it would stand to reason, seeing as I’m coming upon my 9th anniversary working here… but still, it seems like just yesterday that I tentatively submitted my first column for consideration, as a “trial run” of sorts. The rest, as they say, is history. Fast forward to the present day, as I’m in the process of

putting together a presentation for my alma mater, discussing the path I took to achieve my career aspirations, the ten years that have elapsed since being in the comfortable confines of a classroom, and all that has transpired along the way. Not that I saw it as such a clear-cut path at the time, but I suppose we rarely do when we’re in the midst of the daily madness of responsibilities and obligations and all that fun stuff. Ten years is a long time, and much has changed in the interim, to be sure; but just as much remains the same. It takes the benefit of perspective to take stock of where you’ve been, where you’re going and, perhaps most importantly,

where you’re at now. We tend to forget that part, so consumed are we by reminiscing over the good ole’ days and looking forward to the next stage. It’s funny, too, when you look back, to realize that so much is pre-planned for us while still in school, such is the structure of the academic world. But once you graduate, it’s a whole new spectrum of possibilities. It just takes some planning and preparation to maximize that potential and avoid becoming complacent. There’s no bell schedule to dictate our next move, no breakdown of semesters… just us, on our own, finding our way in the great beyond. Here’s to the next milestone!

As winter slowly winds down, many gardeners cannot wait to soak up the springtime sun and get their hands dirty in the garden. Such excitement is not just good for gardeners, but can benefit the garden in the months to come as well. Late winter or early spring is a great time to get a head start on the gardening season. Even if gardening season is still around the corner, completing the following projects can ensure your garden gets off on the right foot. Clear Debris One of the best things you can do for your garden as winter winds down is to clear it of debris. Winter can be especially harsh on a landscape, and gardens left to the elements are often filled with debris once spring arrives. Dead

leaves, fallen branches, rocks that surfaced during the winter frost, and even garbage that might have blown about in winter winds can all pile up in a garden over a typical winter. Clearing such debris likely won’t take long, but it’s a great first step toward restoring the garden before the time comes to plant and grow the garden once again. Examine The Soil Soil plays a significant role in whether a garden thrives or struggles. Examining the soil before the season starts can help gardeners address any issues before they plant. Ignoring the soil until a problem arises can turn the upcoming gardening season into a lost opportunity, so test the soil to determine if

Many flowers compete with one another to attract butterflies, birds and bees for pollination, but at least two species of flowering plants have enhanced their ability to attract insects in unique ways. The titan arum (Amorphophallus titanium) is native to western Sumatra, where it grows in openings in rainforests. It is the largest unbranched flower in the world and can reach up to 15 feet tall. But this alone is not what makes the titan arum so special. It is unwise to step in close to get a whiff of this enormous bloom, as the plant gives off a rancid odor reminiscent of rotting meat. It is sometimes known as the carrion plant or the corpse plant for this reason. The plant has created this scent to attract flies for pollination. The rafflesia, which is native to southeastern Asia as well, is another plant that produces a rotting aroma to attract insects. The rafflesia has no stems, leaves or true roots - it’s basically one large flower.

By: Diane Sciacchitano, North Massapequa Lofty goals Dare I indulge Climb out on that ledge Throw caution to the wind Will I fall or will I fly No matter which My obsession to try Used to be easy Decisions to make But aging can daunt The bolder path to take In quiet moments I channel my thoughts Have faith – be confident Endless possibilities not to be fought Always keep reaching Knowing there is more Curious to what awaits behind the next door Yours for the taking Just look around Waste not a moment Finally … homeward bound

Testimony By: Karen Mormando, Massapequa In love you came to seek and save Lost sinners such as me In faithful obedience you hung upon that tree To buy us back from sin and death And set us captives free Dear Lord, give us grateful hearts And eyes to clearly see The sacrifice you made for us That day on Calvary Your precious blood spilled to the ground To cleanse us white as snow Our sin debt was now paid in full Too wondrous for us to know In pain and grief you bore our sins There was no other way The worst part was your father Had to look away A just God could not look on sin In death you were alone Praise God! Liming is a corrective measure and does not need to be used on a healthy, thriving lawn. • Invest in a spreader to add seed to the lawn. The spreader will have various settings that enable you to calibrate the rate of seed dispersion depending on your walking speed. Fill the spreader with seed and begin to walk around the lawn. Drop spreaders require you to apply seed in rows with no overlap. Broadcast spreaders will cast seed widely and may need some overlap to guarantee complete coverage. • Spread another thin layer of compost mix over the seed and water thoroughly. The compost will help keep moisture in while the seeds germinate. • Aim for lawn watering two to three times per day. The seed should be barely dry between watering. After seeds have germinated and established, you can reduce the frequency of watering but increase the depth of the watering to keep roots strong. • Avoid foot traffic on a newly seeded lawn until the grass is well established.

grow into the flower bed are severed. Depending on how large a garden is, edging can be a timeconsuming task, so getting a head start allows homeowners to spend more time planting and tending to their gardens once the season hits full swing. Fight Weeds Though weeds likely have not survived the winter, that does not mean they won’t return once the weather starts to heat up. But as inevitable as weeds may seem, homeowners can take steps to prevent them from turning beautiful gardens into battlegrounds where

plants, flowers and vegetables are pitted against unsightly and potentially harmful weeds. Spring is a good time to apply a pre-emergent weed preventer, which can stop weeds before they grow. Though such solutions are not always foolproof, they can drastically reduce the likelihood of weed growth. Though gardeners might not be able to start planting their gardens in late winter or early spring, they can still get outside and take steps to ensure their gardens thrive once planting season begins.

work. Reach into the soil and dig out a handful. If the soil quickly crumbles, you can start preparing for gardening seasoning. But if the soil is still clumped together, it needs more time to dry out before you can begin your prep work. Initiate Edging Edging is another task gardeners can begin as they get ready for the season. Edge plant and flower beds, but be sure to use a spade with a flat blade or an edger designed to edge flower beds. Such tools will cut deep enough so grass roots that may eventually

When people think of outdoor storage, they generally envision garden sheds to house their lawn and garden equipment and tools. However, if space doesn’t allow for a large shed, there is no need to fret because there are other storage possibilities. Consider a garden ottoman or bench, for example. This structure can be built from wood and then painted or covered in padded fabric. Store small items inside the ottoman, which can also serve as a table or additional seating. In addition to an ottoman, a garden tool that can keep shovels and rakes organized. Homeowners with a deck can construct lidded deck boxes to store patio cushions or any other outdoor equipment. Utilizing the space under the deck is another idea. Cover the perimeter of the bottom of the deck with lattice and install one piece on a hinge to serve as a door. Store equipment underneath and out of sight. It also will be protected from the elements.

and trim the lawn short, especially if it was left long at the end of last season. This will help seed penetrate the blades of grass and get to the soil beneath. • High-traffic lawns may need aeration to counteract compacted soil. Moss on the ground is often an indication of compaction. Aeration will help with this problem, as it pokes holes into the soil to enable oxygenation that keeps new grass robust and promotes faster growth. Lawn aerators can be rented from many garden centers. • Spread a mixture of topsoil and compost over the top of the lawn. This will add nutrients through organic matter to the lawn and create a good base for the new seed to take root. It will also help strengthen any existing grass and promote long-term health. • Test a sample of the soil to check the pH. Grass prefers a neutral pH, but some soil tends to lean toward the acidic side, especially if you see the presence of moss. Knowing the pH will help determine just how much lime per square foot you will need to adjust it accordingly.

Spring has sprung, and there are many activities to enjoy now that the warmer weather has arrived. Many homeowners make the most of warmer weather by tackling projects around their properties. While autumn is a better time to overseed a lawn for new growth, satisfactory results still can be had if seeding is done early enough in the spring. Grass needs ample time to establish roots and grow strong before the summer heat takes its toll. Many types of grass need six to 12 weeks of ideal temperatures and growing conditions to germinate and produce a sturdy grass that will grow and endure. Seeding can be done to rejuvenate an existing lawn and fill in bare spots. It also can be done to start a lawn from scratch. The following are some tips to help make seeding projects more successful. • Begin by raking the lawn to remove thatch and any fallen leaves leftover from autumn and winter. Raking also enables you to inspect the lawn for bare patches or matting of grass that may be indicative of a fungus or other problem. • Dust off the mower

Celebrating 25 Years Keep Islip Clean (KIC) is celebrating its 25th Anniversary of helping to preserve the environment with cleanups throughout Islip Town, beginning with the Islip Hamlet Community Cleanup Day and East Islip Community Cleanup on Saturday, April 5th. Cleanups are slated at Brook Street, from 9:30 to 11 a.m.; at Commack Road and Spur Drive South from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and in East Islip, beginning at the Mulberry Restaurant

parking lot, at 11:30 a.m. Interested parties can also organize their own cleanups, by calling the KIC office at 631.224.2627, or emailing keepislipclean@ optonline.net. KIC will supply volunteers with vinyl gloves, bags, litter pick-up sticks and refreshments. Students who participate can earn community service hours. This celebration of KIC’s 25th anniversary is being made possible thanks to sponsor North Shore LIJ Health

System. KIC is a non-profit organization that is affiliated with Keep America Beautiful, Inc. Its mission is to create a “cleaner” “prouder” Islip. Thousands of volunteers work year-round picking up roadside litter and debris, planting flowers, painting over graffiti, and cleaning wetlands, throughout Islip’s 18 hamlets. For more information on KIC and its many programs and initiatives, visit www. KeepIslipClean.org.

Tree & Shrub Maintenance Pruning trees and shrubs is necessary to ensure they maintain their health and vigor. Trees and shrubs should be inspected annually to determine if they need to be pruned. Mature trees typically do not need to be pruned as frequently as young trees, which need pruning to establish branch structure. Trees and shrubs that go years without pruning can become overgrown and weak. In addition to promoting tree and shrub health, pruning pays a

host of other dividends. • Pruning removes dead or diseased branches. Pruning helps a tree or shrub maintain its shape and vigor by removing broken, dead or diseased branches that can be unsightly and make it more difficult for the tree or shrub to stay healthy. When broken, dead or diseased branches are removed, trees or shrubs look healthier and add aesthetic appeal to a property. • Pruning trees and shrubs promotes growth

of other plants. Trees and shrubs that go years without being pruned become overgrown, making it difficult for plants underneath or adjacent to them to grow in healthy. For example, grass beneath an overgrown tree might not get adequate sunlight, which it needs to establish strong roots so it can grow in lush and healthy. Pruning allows plants beneath the tree and shrub and even those next to the tree and shrub to grow in nicely.

• Pruning can sometimes bring plants back to life. Shrubs that have gone years without being pruned can sometimes still be salvaged. In some instances, pruning such shrubs can restore natural and healthy growth. • Pruning reduces risk of accidents. Overgrown trees can interfere with power lines, increasing the risk of accidents and power outages. In addition, overgrown trees tend to have larger, weaker limbs, which can

prove hazardous and cause property damage during storms. Pruning overgrown trees reduces the risk of such accidents. • Pruning can save money. Over time, overgrown trees might require professional assistance in order to be removed or pruned from a property. Homeowners who prune their trees as needed can save themselves the cost of a potentially pricey tree service. • Pruning adds curb appeal. A property littered

with overgrown trees and shrubs hurts a home’s curb appeal, giving prospective buyers the impression that homeowners might have been careless with regard to maintaining the whole house and not just the lawn. But trees and shrubs that are pruned and well-maintained can add to a home’s curb appeal, something that goes a long way toward impressing prospective buyers.

a fraction of the time it would take a homeowner working on his or her own. Landscapers familiar with botany and landscape design understand how to properly care for plants and trees on your property, while novice green thumbers may be unaware about when to prune trees and shrubs, at what height to cut the lawn and which plants will thrive in particular locations. Such do-it-yourself maintenance may even cost more money than leaving it to a professional. Hiring a professional landscaper is, in many instances, more economical. For a certain weekly or monthly fee, homeowners receive the benefit of professional knowledge and execution. Also, homeowners will not have the expense of purchasing the various tools and equipment necessary for lawn and garden maintenance, tools and equipment that include lawnmowers, string weeders, edgers, fertilizer, grass seed, leaf blowers, and shovels.

Used Cars (NAPSA)-Getting a used car can be a great way to save-if you know what to look for. A free Carfax Vehicle History Report can help. Learn more at www. carfax.com.

Another benefit is the lawn will continue to be mowed whether a homeowner is home or not. During the spring and summer vacation season, it’s easy for homeowners to overlook their lawn and garden in favor of recreation and leisure activities. Without proper watering and maintenance, lawns and gardens can brown or overgrowth

can occur. But hiring a landscaping service allows homeowners to rest assured that their yards will be maintained whether they’re home or not. Hiring a local landscaping service will not only benefit homeowners, but also it will benefit the local economy. Residents can feel comfortable knowing their lawn service will be

available for calls when needed and will be familiar with the community. Also, local contractors may go the extra mile to earn your business recommendation. Hiring a landscaping service can be advantageous to homeowners who want to free up time and still enjoy a well-maintained landscape.
