Bay Shore Middle School English teacher, Christine Chocko, and Diane Gilman, “The Queen of Jeans” of the Home Shopping Network, teamed up with and their doctor, Alan Garely MD, chair of obstetrics and gynecology and director of urogynecology at South Nassau Communities Hospital, to help give a voice to female medical issues that are often not discussed.

Ms. Chocko, Ms. Gilman and Dr. Garely recently hosted the 1st Annual Denim & Diamonds Winter Gala to build awareness of pelvic floor disorder and raise funds to establish a comprehensive women’s health center.

More than 200 guests, including family, friends and fellow teachers of Ms. Chocko, friends of Ms. Gilman, as well as doctors and women’s health specialists, attended the special gala, which raised a net total of more than $125,000 and was held in December at The Garden City Hotel.

Ms. Chocko, adored and respected by her students, fellow teachers and the Bay Shore schools community, was diagnosed with pelvic floor disorder in 2012 after delivering her son.

After enduring six surgeries, multiple hospital stays, skin grafting and far too many blood transfusions to correct the condition, the Bay Shore Middle School teacher was inspired to take the lead role and team up with Dr. Garely and Ms. Gilman to launch a campaign to raise international awareness of women’s struggle with the debilitating and disheartening disorder and raise money to establish a women’s health center that would specialize in treating it.

“As it relates to being an informed and wise healthcare consumer, knowing where to find the information and help you need is essential,” said Ms. Chocko. “Had this center been available, my six surgeries would have been one.”

The gala was also highlighted by a $50,000 donation made by Stamatiki Valiotis in support of establishing the women’s health center. The gala’s top sponsors were Alma Realty Group, Colorectal Surgical

Specialist of NY, Diane Gilman Fashion, LLC, Home Shopping Network and North American Partners in Anesthesia “On behalf of Diane, Christine and each individual who worked with us to plan the gala, I thank each guest and sponsor for their generosity and support of our mission to establish the women’s health center,” said Dr. Garely. “The success of the gala is an important first step in our journey to complete that mission.”

Dr. Garely says the center will reduce the amount of time women spend searching for the specialized healthcare services they need, while making it more convenient for them to schedule vital healthcare or wellness appointments.

Featuring a multidisciplinary team of women’s health specialists, the center will offer gynecological services, urogynecology, colorectal surgery, urology, and pelvic floor therapy.

Ms. Gilman, the top-selling fashion designer known as the “The Queen of Jeans” on television’s HSN and QVC home shopping networks, suffered with pelvic floor disorder for eight long and arduous years.

Since her surgery to eliminate the condition, which was performed by Dr. Garely in April 2015 at South Nassau, her life is back to normal.

“My mission is to get pelvic floor disorders out in the open,” said Ms. Gilman. “Years ago, breast cancer was hushhush, but now it’s socially acceptable to talk about it; we need to be honest and open about pelvic floor disorders, too.”

With that as her inspiration, Ms. Gilman, the top selling fashion tele-retailing personality, teamed with Ms. Chocko and Dr. Garely to raise funds for the women’s health center, which would serve the entire South Shore as well as women everywhere in the New York area. “The center will not only provide world-class personalized female health care but also information and education about pelvic floor disorder and the range of patient-centered options to treat it,” said Ms. Gilman.

Pelvic floor disorders affect an estimated one in four women in the United States.

Some patients may leak urine or stool, have a frequent need to urinate, or have unexplained pain in the pelvic or genital area due to aging or childbirth or both. Although Dr. Garely and his team did not use transvaginal mesh to fix pelvic disorders, many doctors did. This was a procedure that sometimes resulted in serious complications and scared many women enough to avoid treatment. Urogynecologists at South Nassau, however, permanently and safely fix pelvic floor disorders with an abdominal approach, utilizing small incisions. “The transabdominal surgery is the gold standard in repairing pelvic organ prolapse,” says Dr. Garely. “The success rate is between 95 and 99 percent.”

“Everything in my life revolved around my condition,” Ms. Gilman said.

“Now, I have my life back.

The results were better than I dared to dream! So my mission is to get pelvic floor disorders talked about, out of the shadows and into open discussion.”

“Diane, as well as Christine, is an example to all women who are not willing to simply settle with a condition like pelvic floor disorders. She had the inner courage and strength to take back her life, to seek the right medical advice. It can be very confusing for women and we want them to know that there is help available for this and other debilitating health conditions and diseases that afflict them,” says Dr. Garely.

Of course, officially, I was “covering” this event in my capacity as a journalist; however, the opportunity

to be a part of such a small audience in front of one of my idols had its own unique appeal on a personal level – at the very institution where I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree over a decade ago. While not a full-fledged concert by any means, there was “a little music” to go along with the anecdotes, making for an afternoon of memories to last a lifetime.

In the weeks since, I had occasion to peruse my college portfolio, where I came across an essay I had written on the hopes and aspirations I had for my career. “Countdown to Commencement,” it was called, covering everything from grad school to loans to the job search to that endless search for fulfillment.

As much as anyone thinks he/she has life all mapped out, it is nearly impossible to rely on a set blueprint.

Because, every now and then, life itself beckons, with all its unanticipated twists and turns.

Such was my sentiment in the Spring of 2004, and so it remains. If you had told me 12 years ago that I would be back in the Tilles Center theatre, as an editor and columnist, mere feet away from the likes of Billy Joel… well that would have fallen under the “unanticipated” category for sure. I can only imagine the thrill it was for those high school students, those with the world at their feet, endless opportunities stretched before them.

Oh, to have that feeling once again…

Help Kids Feel Comfortable at the Dentist

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1, or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth.

Parents worried about how their kids will respond to the dentist can take the following steps to acclimate kids to dental visits to make them more comfortable during their appointments now and down the road: Be a positive role model. Children frequently learn by example. If they see their parents being diligent about dental care, they’re more likely to embrace proper oral hygiene. Bring children to your own dental appointments so they understand the process and become familiar with the type of equipment used.

Routine dental examinations and cleanings are an important component of oral healthcare for both children and adults. However, many children do not visit the dentist until well after the time recommended by medical and dental professionals.

Stick to the first-tooth milestone. Take your child to the dentist on or about when his or her first tooth erupts. Early dental visits will get kids used to going to the dentist and prevent minor problems that may lead to more complex

dental issues.

Read books about the dentist and role play. Information can allay kids’ fears about the dentist. Read books together about dental visits and act out possible scenarios with your kids. Give kids toy dental health tools and have them practice exams on you and vice-versa.

Be supportive and instill trust. Avoid telling your child that everything will be okay. If a procedure is needed, this could affect his or her trust in you and make the dental office an even greater source of anxiety. Simply be supportive and offer a hand to squeeze or a hug if your child needs you.

Consider using your dentist. Some parents like to take their children to a pediatric dentist, but it may not always be necessary. Many family practices cater to patients of all ages, and the familiarity of the office may help make children feel more comfortable. Speak with your dentist about the ages they see.

Steer clear of negative words. Michael J. Hanna, DMD, a national spokesperson for the AAPD, suggests using positive phrases like “clean, strong, healthy teeth” to make the visit seem fun and positive rather than scary and alarming. Let the office staff come up with their own words to describe processes that won’t seem too frightening.

By employing these techniques, kids’ dental visits can be more pleasant for all involved, paving the way for a lifetime of healthy teeth.
