LICADD Named A Finalist LICADD has been named a Finalist in the Rising Star category in The 3rd Annual Long Island Imagine Awards. The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations.

GUEST SPEAKER - Islip Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt recently addressed members of the Long Island Business Development Council (LIBDC) at a monthly dinner meeting held at the Irish Coffee Pub in East Islip. Councilwoman Bergin Weichbrodt took the opportunity to emphasize the Town’s continued commitment to bringing new businesses to the area, as well as aiding existing businesses looking to expand, citing the assistance and support provided by the Islip Industrial Development Agency, that in 2014 alone, induced a record 27 new projects, which helped to create 1700 jobs, while retaining 669.

Jazz Legend Welcomed

On January 14th the St. John the Baptist D.H.S. Jazz Ensemble had the great opportunity of playing with Jazz Musician Glenn Drewes. Mr. Drewes, a West Babylon native, eagerly shared his musical talent with our students.

Mr. Drewes taught a master class to the students in the Jazz Ensemble led by Performing Arts Department Chair Mr. Chris Donohue. Mr. Donohue has worked together with Mr. Drewes doing clinics and workshops at Nassau Community College, Adelphi, and SUNY Purchase for their Jazz Programs. They have also have done workshops together at High Schools around Long Island

promoting Jazz Education in schools.

The diverse career of Glenn Drewes has spanned the likes of jazz greats Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie and Mel Lewis and includes successful pop artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Harry Connick Jr., David Sanborn and P. Diddy. In addition to being heard on hundreds of jingles, feature films, network award shows, and sports themes Mr. Drewes is best known for his work on Broadway and for playing on the children’s educational show Sesame Street for 20 years Mr. Donohue stated that “the students had an amazing time; they played

The National History Bee is an academic competition for middle school students that tests their knowledge of a wide range of historical topics. Since September, five middle school students from The Bridges Academy have been preparing for the competition under the direction of our Middle School teacher, Ms. Breitkreutz.

The first round, held in January, was the ORQE or the Online Regional

Qualifying Exam. Students took a 50 question multiple choice test online in hopes that their scores would move them on to the Regional Finals round.

All five students from The Bridges Academy who took the ORQE have advanced on to the Regional Finals Round.

The Regional Finals will be held in Bridgeport, Connecticut on April 14th.

competition questions, challenging their knowledge of history even more.

The Sea Tow Foundation is accepting applications from non-profit organizations and boating agencies throughout the country to host a life jacket loaner program in their local area through a new grant from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund, which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Sea Tow Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization with the mission of promoting safe boating practices. To help promote life jacket use, the Sea Tow Foundation stocks more than 250 life jacket loaner stands nationwide where boaters may borrow life jackets for free for a day of safe fun on the water. The Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner program has been funded through donations and grants since its inception in 2008. Since then, more than 28,500 free life jackets have been

loaned to boaters through the program.

“Life jacket loaner programs are most often used by boaters who forgot to pack their own life jackets or decided at the last minute to invite a friend to go boating and didn’t have a life jacket that would fit him or her,” said Sea Tow Foundation Executive Director Gail R. Kulp, CAE. “These new life jacket loaner stations will be open in time for the 2015 summer boating season so that boaters around the country can have the opportunity to borrow a life jacket for a day out on the water.”

Life jacket loaner program applications now are being accepted through March 1st, 2015.

I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting.

Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers.

On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension.

There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture.

This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it.

We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

Broken Lines By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Used to be, if you wanted to get in touch with someone, you picked up the phone and called.

If you couldn’t reach them immediately, you left a message – either on an answering machine or with another person associated with them – and then waited patiently for a return call. Tedious, right?

So why is it that, these days, with every gadget and method of communicating imaginable, it seems more difficult than ever to actually, you know, communicate?

Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes.

It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant influx of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications

and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on.

Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately.

a safe and convenient pharmaceutical disposal option has already reduced the number of institutions flushing unused medications, and now participation in this program needs to be expanded and strengthened in the future.”

Participating facilities, made up primarily of nursing, extended care and rehabilitation centers, began storing unused and expired medications in October when they were first contacted by DEC. Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) then visited each of the 25 facilities this week to collect the stored medications and brought them to the Covanta Waste-to-Energy Plant in Westbury, which volunteered its services to incinerate the products.

Prescription drug take back efforts began in the last few years. Prior to these initiatives the normal disposal practice was to flush unwanted drugs. With technological

advances in analytical techniques, it is now possible to detect very low levels of drugs in surface water and groundwater.

Some drugs pass largely unaltered through wastewater treatment plants and enter rivers and other waterways.

Drugs from heath care facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and farms can also find their way into the water.

Flushed medications have been found in New York lakes, rivers and streams which can negatively affect the waterways. A nationwide study done in 1999 and 2000 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) found low levels of drugs such as antibiotics, hormones, contraceptives and steroids in 80 percent of rivers and streams tested.

Medications adversely affect fish and other aquatic wildlife and increase the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
