She has also played Club Volleyball with LI United, run spring track, sung our national anthem at almost every school function and participated in over 20 school clubs and organizations. Coach DeBonis stated, “Asia is simply one of the student-athletes that a coach can NEVER forget. Asia will be sorely missed at Bay Shore High School when she graduates but we all can’t wait for the next goal she will accomplish, because once this girl sets her mind to something, she WILL achieve it!” The Bay Shore School District congratulates Asia and her family on this impressive achievement and wishes her the best of luck in the future.

Forever An Original By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Albert Capraro, Lindenhurst High School Class of 1961 graduate, Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976 and personal designer of choice to none other than First Lady Betty Ford, passed away on October 8th, 2013 following a brief illness. I consider myself lucky to have made his acquaintance and privileged to have interviewed him for a profile for this very column several years ago. Following are excerpts from my original piece, published October 11th, 2006 ...
Lady Betty Ford invited Mr. Capraro to a personal consultation at the White House. And the rest, as they say, is history. Through the years, he designed for a vast collection of women, including the likes of Julie Andrews, Marlo Thomas, Sophia Loren, Barbara Walters, Marissa Tomei and several of the Miss Americas. In 1976, he accomplished the “hat trick” of being the simultaneous designer-of-choice for Miss America 1976, First Lady Betty Ford and American Ambassador Ann Armstrong, helping to crown him with his most-cherished title of Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976. For a man whose designs now qualify as “vintage” on E-bay; for someone who used to regularly mingle with all walks of stars, he comes away from the whole experience with one sentiment that stands above the rest: “Ego doesn’t work.” As a result, Mr. Capraro

finds himself equally comfortable designing costumes for a Hicksville High School theatre production – which he has done several times – as he did while living the lavish life of limousines, champagne, starstudded galas and black-tie affairs ... all words which are still “music to (his) ears.” The man who was originally inspired to design by Princess Grace’s wedding gown and who recently donated the original mannequin and about twenty of his designs worn by the First Lady to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, now lives by the simplest of mottos: “Pursue and persist ... Love what you’re doing.” What a lovely person. What outstanding accomplishments. And to think it began all those years ago in the halls of Lindy High School. His is a story that deserves to be shared. And admired by all.

South Bay Shore - South Bay’s Neighbor NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday October 16, 2013 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
Mr. Capraro’s path to success began to take shape way back in high school while walking the halls of Lindy. His influences ranged from several members of the art department to his beloved guidance counselor, all of whom nurtured his already-outstanding talent for both fashion and film, even going so far
as to attend the “fashion shows” and “movie premieres” he would put on at his home. After graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design, Mr. Capraro landed his first job working with a French designer on Park Avenue. He then moved on to a position with noted designer Joberie, headquartered on Seventh Avenue - Fashion Avenue. From there, he catapulted to the opportunity of a lifetime, working with Oscar de la Renta - his “mentor” - with whom he flourished for eight glorious years. Mr. Capraro eventually started up his own label, of which his first collection was quite a success. As he dryly observed, “I was an ‘overnight’ sensation after ten years.” However, it was exactly this achievement which provided the necessary steppingstone from which there would be no turning back. After reading a favorable review of his clothing line, First

and tourists,” said Flotteron. “As a parent, I often found there to be a lack of historical marketing material available when I was helping my children with research. I knew information was out there, but it just wasn’t easily accessible to the general public. Flotteron’s frustrations prompted him to enlist the help of Bay Shore resident, Patrick Valdini, who was studying history and visual arts at the time, to create a historical map that would

Peering up at the sky presently, and exploring its contents, I sense a despair emanating from the aphotic, bleek hues of alto stratus clouds, enhancing my own sadness.

They form a canopy below the heavens, allowing no display of warm, azure sky. Perhaps soon we will experience precipitation in the form of rain. But now, behold, on the far horizon, one sees several stratocumulus clouds revealing their puffy, hoary cotton balls And I fantasize a desire and urge, like a lad, to jump and frolic upon them. When once more the sky appears blue like the calm waters of a tepid tropical sea, I am restored again, breathing deeply and at ease, achieving a state of elation and high spirits. It is the sky’s indigo light and the crepuscular rays of sunshine passing in and through the diaphanous clouds which bestirs one to vibrant fervor and eagerness for life.

Time passes by so quickly. You can barely take a look at yesterday to prepare for a new tomorrow. Why is there never enough time to take back what shouldn’t have been said? Things said in anger, tears, sorrow, fears... Will you ever be an optimist, or are you one that I can’t see? There is always room for argument. Never let your defenses down. When you are not looking, things are lost. Protect what you have worked for. Protect what is yours. Protect what is close to you. You will never lose. My life is an encyclopedia... Open, read, learn, but please don’t get frustrated and irate over a word not understood. Open a dictionary to define the word. Open a thesaurus and discover a synonym. There is never enough knowledge. As the world turns daily, history is created. Another page, another chapter. Learn, educate and live in happiness. The more you learn, the more you know, the more you love.

Sibling Bragging Rights the water signaled the start of our very brief rivalry. In that moment, I wanted nothing more than to beat my brother. After the first few hundred meters, we were ahead and gaining, but after a few minutes, that all changed. As we slightly altered our course, a huge wave crashed over our port side, flooding the boat. We were still afloat, but the added water weight made every stroke less productive. With every stroke, my brother’s boat was gaining and we were taking on more water. Coming into the final two hundred meters, we were still in the lead, but barely. It was close, but we had them by about a boat length. Then, our Cox had us suddenly stop rowing.
From the back of the boat, I couldn’t make out what she was saying. One by one, I saw the boys in front of me jump out of the boat and into the Hudson. Panicked, I jumped out too. Our boat had sunk, and we were floating in the middle of one of the roughest waters in New York. As we watched my brother swiftly finish, we realized that we had lost. Sure, it was on mere luck, but he was the one toting the Gold Medal. Embarrassed, we boarded the Haverstraw Fire Department’s boat. I had lost, to my brother no less. Even though I was sad we didn’t finish, I was happy at least one of the Cianciulli boys was bringing home the gold for SJB Crew.

In the Girls’ 4th grade race this year, Gardiner Manor emerged victorious, with Gianna Ross (GMS) winning the 800 meter. Bay Shore Middle School competed in Bay Shore Cross-Country Day for the first time, running the mile. Lauren Hendricks (7th) edged Kassidy Metzger (7th) in the Girls’ race, while Ken Rubio (8th) won the Boys’ event. Meanwhile, Bay Shore’s varsity teams competed against North Babylon in a league meet. The Bay Shore and North Babylon girls ran to a thrilling
28-28 tie. The tie-breaker came down to the sixth runner for each team. Cesia Andrade placed 10th overall for Bay Shore, while the North Babylon girl placed 15th, allowing Bay Shore to remain undefeated at 2-0. Caelyn Reilly placed 2nd to lead Bay Shore. In the Boys’ race, Bay Shore lost to a strong North Babylon team. Thanks are due to Meet Directors Coach Steve Borbet and Coach Kurt Langer, as well as Director Claude Kasman, Assistant Director and photographer Ted Nagengast, Mr. Jim Johnson, Coach Paul Todaro, Coach Danielle Sullivan, GMS teacher Tess Balzano, and SCS teachers Finola Schmidt and Gina Paolantonio.

South Bay Shore - South Bay’s Neighbor NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday October 16, 2013 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
On a recent Saturday, the SJB Crew Team competed at the Brickyard 5000. The day started out like any other, with the first few races running smoothly. As the day wore on, the wind picked up and the already rough Hudson River turned into a series of veritable tsunamis. My race, the Varsity Eight, the last heat of the day, was running right on time. The course had been shortened, and I was to compete head to head with my little brother. As we paddled out, I knew I could not let him win for the sake of bragging rights. We knew the water was rough, but we also knew we were ready. As we spun the boat and got underway, the crack of the oars hitting
On Tuesday, September 24th, the 3rd Annual Bay Shore Cross-Country Day was held at Gardiner’s Park in Bay Shore. Students from Gardiner Manor (GMS), South Country (SCS), Bay Shore Middle School and Bay Shore High School all took part in the races. Claude Kasman, Bay Shore Schools’ Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics, served as each race’s official starter. South Country School came away the day’s big winner! In the Boys’ 5th grade race, South Country won, with Jake Rabin (SCS) winning the 1000m. Ryan Taabe, who won the 3rd grade race in 2011, finished a close second. South Country also won the Boys’ 4th grade race, taking nine of the first ten places. Nate Nagengast (SCS) edged Thomas Baratta (GMS), following in the footsteps of their dads, both of whom were successful Bay Shore runners “back in the day.” Nate also won the 3rd grade race in 2012. South Country won the Girls’ 5th grade race, though

SUPERINTENDENT VISIT - This September, Superintendent Dr. Karen Salmon visited Fifth Avenue School as part of her plan to bring special attention each month to the staff of one of Bay Shore’s seven schools. Dr. Salmon visited with Principal Charlotte Wilson, the Fifth Avenue staff and students and provided lunch for faculty and staff. Everyone was given the opportunity to “dress down” in jeans and invited to wear maroon and white or specific school shirts to express their school spirit.

With an assortment of gourmet foods and delightful cocktails, Island Harvest Food Bank’s 20th Annual “Taste of the Harvest Celebration” is sure to be an evening to remember. Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, will use the proceeds of this celebration, its premier fundraiser, to provide critical food support to a network of almost 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other local programs that offer food assistance to the more than 300,000 Long Islanders—over 110,000 of them children—who face hunger each and every day. This year’s gala will be held on Tuesday, October 22nd, at 6 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York. At the Taste of the Harvest, restaurants, caterers, country clubs and other fine establishments from across the Island will come together under one roof to offer attendees an array of gourmet food and drink. The evening will also feature live and silent auctions with a variety of
lavish prizes up for grabs. In addition to the food and fun, Island Harvest will honor two individuals who, through their dedication and service, have made a huge impact on the organization and its mission. Jeff Tempone, CEO of East Coast Refrigeration, will be receiving the “Above and Beyond Award” for his commitment to the fight against hunger, as exemplified by his generous donation of refrigeration units to Island Harvest’s Hauppauge Distribution Center. His contribution has helped Island Harvest store and distribute more fresh and healthy, perishable – foods, including produce, dairy products and juices. Greta Farrell, a student volunteer, will receive the “Linda Breitstone Award,” named for Island Harvest’s founder and its first president. The prestigious award recognizes an individual whose fervor, determination and hard work have made a positive difference in the lives of others.
Volunteer Recognition
Greta’s passion for service took hold at a young age. Upon reading a Newsday article highlighting the demand for food, the 11-year-old was shocked to learn that many Long Island families would not be able to enjoy special Thanksgiving dinners. Inspired to take action and make a difference, she wrote a letter to friends and raised enough money to buy at least 100 turkeys… in just two days. Greta is a founding member of Island Harvest’s Student Leadership Council, which empowers future leaders to increase awareness of issues related to hunger on Long Island. Tickets for the “Taste of the Harvest Celebration” are $295, which will help Island Harvest continue to fight hunger on Long Island. For more information about the celebration, including sponsorship opportunities, please contact Elissa Weick, Manager of Special Events, at 516.294.8528, extension 116 or elissa@ islandharvest.org.

Recently Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga presented Firefighter Trevor Ruiz of the Bay Shore Fire Department #437 Hook & Ladder Co. 1 with a proclamation honoring him as District 11 nominee for the Suffolk County Legislature’s Volunteer Recognition Month whereby each Legislator has the opportunity to formally nominate one person in his/her district for their outstanding service to the community as a Firefighter
or EMS worker. While traveling on a personal motorcycle on May 12th, 2103 Firefighter Ruiz stopped to investigate what looked to be a car accident and soon realized that the male driver was in cardiac arrest and he began chest compressions on him. He also went onto assist a Suffolk Co Police Officer with the deployment and use of the SCPD Automated External Defibrillator and delivered on shock before EMS units from Bay Shore-
Brightwaters Ambulance arrived on the scene. Unfortunately, despite all efforts, the male driver did not survive, but because of FF Ruiz’s actions that day, he gave that male and his family a “Fighting Chance” to survive. At the General Meeting of the Legislature on Tuesday, October 8th, Firefighter Ruiz’s name was be read into the record along, with a brief description of his heroic actions and true outstanding service to the community.
Zombie Run Set

A Taste Of The Harvest
On November 2nd, participants will run for their lives to escape the zombie apocalypse at Brady Park in Massapequa Park to benefit Special Olympics New York! The rUNDEAD is a 5K run, in which runners start off with a flag belt and three flags representing their lifelines. Zombies will be stationed throughout the course attempting to take these one at a time. Once a runner loses all three flags, they are “dead” and the zombies have won. While the runner can still finish the race, they will not be eligible for awards or prizes. Runners can register in two different ways – the competitive “Fast
Food” group or the noncompetitive “All You Can Eat” group. You can register online as an individual or a team in advance for $40 per person at www.therundead.org or sign up that day for $60. Each runner will receive access to the course, race day festivities and an official rUNDEAD race day t-shirt. Those who do not wish to run have the option of registering to become a zombie! Each zombie will be transformed in our “Mob Tent” the morning of the event. Zombies have the option of registering as a “Hunter” who can chase runners or a “Crawler” who can stumble, walk or shuffle after their prey to
try and steal their flags. You can register as an individual or a team in advance for $40 or $60 day of to join the mob! Each zombie will receive their official transformation, a rUNDEAD race day t-shirt, participation in race day festivities and the thrill of the chase! Race day registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the waves of the race starting at 10:30 a.m. Z100 is the official radio partner. If your business is interested in becoming a sponsor or would like to be involved in this new, exciting event, please contact Jennifer Cantone at 631.254.1465 ext. 12or jcantone@nyso.org.
