The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that seasonal boat slips at the Robert Moses State Park East Marina are available for rent. Interested boaters can obtain an application to reserve a slip by visiting the Robert Moses State Park Office.

The Robert Moses State Park East Marina has forty (40) boat slips, which are available from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. East Marina Seasonal slips will be available on a first come, first serve basis, and will be assigned by Robert Moses State Park. In the event the marina has reached capacity, you will be placed

on the wait list.

A seasonal boat slip costs $50 per foot. Slips can accommodate vessels up to 40 feet long with a maximum beam of 14 feet.

Each slip has potable water, two cleats, and electric hook-up.

The power source is 50 amps (50/125).

Boaters must supply their own ropes, adapters, and extension cords. Each slip includes one vehicle parking permit.

No overnight visitor parking will be permitted. Boaters who rent a slip during the 2022 season will automatically be renewed for the 2023 season.

Robert Moses State Park is located at the south end of the Robert

Shinnecock Bay Recognized As A New Global “Hope Spot” Shinnecock Bay on the south shore of Long Island, New York, is being named a new “Hope Spot” by Mission Blue, an international organization that supports the protection of oceans worldwide. This distinction is the result of a decade of restorative and scientific work co-led by Ellen Pikitch, Ph.D., Christopher Gobler, Ph.D. and Bradley Peterson, Ph.D. in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University.

Hope Spots are iconic ocean regions that stand out as some of the most pristine on the globe.

This places Shinnecock Bay in a league with internationally-recognized locations such as The Galapagos Islands, the Sargasso Sea, and the Ross Sea in Antarctica.

The bay is the first Hope Spot in New York State, the only one near a major metropolitan region, and one of only three others on the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. Dr. Sylvia Earle, founder of Mission Blue, says, “What a concept, in the shadow of one of the most densely populated parts of the planet – New York City!

While New York conjures up visions of skyscrapers and crowded streets, it is a great ocean state with

a significant coastline, a rich maritime heritage and growing opportunities to view ocean wildlife from the shores and in the water.”

At a June 6 event in New York City, Mission Blue and its founder, the internationally renowned marine biologist Sylvia Earle, officially named Shinnecock Bay as a Hope Spot. Pikitch, on behalf of the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science, nominated the bay for this global recognition and Ted Janulis, on behalf of The Explorers Club, served as second nominator.

The official naming took place at The Explorers Club and acknowledged the work of Pikitch and her colleagues at Stony Brook University’s SoMAS, where a team of scientists, educators and students worked together to revive the health, biodiversity, and aquaculture potential of Shinnecock Bay. “The Hope Spot distinction for this unique bay on Long Island is the result of meticulous work and proof that the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program has succeeded in bringing the bay back to the healthier state it was in many decades ago,” says Pikitch, the Endowed Professor of Ocean Conservation

NEW GLOBAL “HOPE SPOT” - Shinnecock Bay on Long Island’s south shore has been named a global Hope Spot after successful restoration efforts over the past decade and its healthy and diverse natural conditions and wildlife.

“Shinnecock Bay is arguably the healthiest bay in New York State, and our work demonstrates that people can reverse the damage done through nature based, scientifically guided restoration,” she continued. “We hope and expect that designation of Shinnecock Bay as a Hope Spot will inspire others to take action to restore other

places to their original beauty, biodiversity, and health.”

Shinnecock Bay is a highly productive estuary that is approximately 122 kilometers from New York City. The bay is a hidden gem of biodiversity that covers an area of 40 square kilometers and consists of 9,000 acres of open water, salt marshes, intertidal flats, and seagrass beds.

These habitats serve as important nursery, feeding, and breeding grounds for many species.

Additionally, the Shinnecock Bay area and surrounding lands has a long history to the Shinnecock Nation, whose reservation is located on the far eastern part of the bay. Leaders of the Shinnecock Nation have endorsed the designation of Shinnecock Bay as a Hope Spot.

The creation of “hard clam sanctuaries” in western Shinnecock Bay is a pivotal part of the restoration effort of the SoMAS Stony Brook

University team. As a result of this work the dangerous brown and red tides that had been occurring annually have not been observed for several years. Landings of hard clams outside the sanctuaries have increased dramatically and are at a level not seen since the mid-1980’s. And, numbers of fish in the bay, most notably forage fishes such as bay anchovy and menhaden, have escalated.

Long Island ‘s foodinsecure seniors are the focus of the Senior Resource Fair taking place Friday, August 12 at Long Island Cares’ Center for Community Engagement in Hauppauge. The fair is cosponsored by Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank and PSEG Long Island.

The purpose of the fair is three-fold: provide increased access to nutritious food, offer take-home fresh produce at a special “farmer’s market,” and expose seniors to advocacy efforts on their behalf and the numerous resources available to them. Ronald McDonald House Charities® New York Metro www. rmhcnym.org

The mission of RMHC New York Metro is to build a community of compassionate care by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of sick children and their families. “Since its inception in 1986, the Ronald McDonald House has served an average of 1,000 families per year,” said Matt Campo, CEO, RMHC NY Metro. “We’ve given back 27,000 hours to the families to spend with their child that might have otherwise been wasted driving back and forth to hotels, to eat meals, or to do laundry.

Everything a family needs for long term accommodation can be found in our house.”

RMHC New York Metro runs a variety of programs, dating back to 1986 when the 42-bedroom Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park opened.

Located immediately adjacent to the Cohen Children’s Hospital, providing the comforts of a home and compassionate care that meet the unique needs of families with sick children.

The organization also operates a Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which gives temporary respite to families who would otherwise spend hours and even days at their children’s bedside. The corresponding Hospitality Cart, staffed by volunteers, brings refreshments and joy to the hospital rooms of children receiving hospital

care.

RMHC New York Metro thrives on the participation of its volunteers from across Long Island to help families focus on what is most important: the health and well-being of their children. These children and families rely on the support of volunteers to make their days easier, and volunteers contribute to a variety of meaningful and important activities every day.

Volunteers also bring joy to families through the Family Room program, opened in 2013 and serving 3,500 families every year, as well as their Meals from the Heart and Treats from the Heart Programs, which invites individuals into the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House to cook a homemade meal and delicious desserts for families.

Throughout this month, you will learn about more about RMHC New York Metro, including profiles of some of their volunteers, the grassroots leadership coming from Long Island Communities that helps support the organization and the aggressive expansion plans for Suffolk County to help families there that are in need.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian and Eastern Suffolk BOCES Announce Job Fair Recruiting for Full and Part-Time Positions

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, will be holding a Job Fair at the Farm to fill a variety of full and part-time positions. Eastern Suffolk BOCES collaborates with Pal-O-Mine to provide students with alternative approaches for educational success. These organization’s use a comprehensive team approach and are seeking individuals for paid positions who have educational, mental health, speech and occupational therapy backgrounds, as well as those with Department of Corrections, Department of Probation, and State or County Court experience.

Volunteers, including retired first responders and veterans, are also sought.

The Job Fair will take place at the organization’s farm in Islandia on Friday, August 12th with time slots for appointments from 10:00 am-11:30 am, 11:30 am-1 pm. To introduce the organization and all

of its facilities, all candidates will be taken on a brief walking tour of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian. Parking, and where the walking tours will begin, is located at 899 Old Nichols Road, Islandia, NY 11749.
