Effort and comprehension are areas of focus. One major change with the introduction of Common Core is the greater emphasis on critical thinking skills. Those changes will very likely be reflected in the report card, which will not only assess a student’s detailed content knowledge, but also his or her demonstrated understanding of higherlevel concepts and more. Pay attention to these marks, as they are a significant measure of students’ performance moving forward with the new standards. Progress toward mastery of grade-level standards is the new norm. While every school district may be different, parents across the nation can expect report cards—particularly in the elementary grades— to measure students’

evaluate your child’s report card this month, keep in mind the following: Understanding the report card format is critical. If your child’s teacher did not provide an explanation of the report card format that is being used, be sure to request one so you are clear on how your child is being evaluated. The newly enhanced report card structures that many schools are now using are not only aligned with state standards (Common Core), they also are supposed to provide parents a more meaningful assessment of their children’s progress.

When your child brings home his or her mid-year report card, it is important to read it carefully and take note of a number of key areas. And with the Common Core State Standards going into effect this school year, Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center reminds parents that report cards may look different this year than in years past. “The report card format may change from last year, as states roll out report cards that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards,” says Huntington. L.I. Cares Donation

Over 40 Years In Business!

Long Island Cares has distributed more than six million pounds of food to over 500 member agencies across Long Island but also seeks to heighten public awareness about hunger and provides skills training to foster self-sufficiency among the population. Founded by singer Happy Chapin in 1980, a year before his untimely passing, their mission is a hunger-free Long Island. “The Long Island Junior Soccer League is proud to partner with Long Island Cares in their fight against hunger,” said LIJSL President Addie MatteiIaia. “We are so grateful to all of our clubs, teams, players and families for their generosity. They have shown time and again that they are willing to go above and beyond, not only to be the best players they can be on the field, but to be the best people they can be off it.”

The LIJSL will be holding another food drive during the 2014 Spring Season. The Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), the largest league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), has donated 1,130 pounds of food to Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank. The food was collected through donations by players, parents, coaches and spectators during the LIJSL Food Drive at the Peter Collins Soccer Park on Old Country Road in Plainview throughout the 2013 Fall Season. “On behalf of all of the children and families served by Long Island Cares, Elana Sissons, Food Drive Coordinator, and I are truly grateful for your support,” said Paule Pachter, Executive Director of Long Island Cares. “This donation will go a long way towards ensuring that more Long Island children and families do not go hungry.”

Common Core Presentation

Interpreting The Report Card Continued From 3 growth over the course of the school year, not just the term for which they are evaluated. As such, it is important that you understand the different progress indicators and what any numeric codes used actually mean regarding your child’s achievement of grade-bygrade benchmarks. It’s all about college and career readiness. The Common Core State

Standards were created to ensure all students graduating from high school are capable of succeeding in collegelevel classes and in their careers. That overarching purpose is reflected in the details of your child’s report card by showing what a student is expected to know and your child’s progress toward those targets. Keep that in mind as you read through your child’s report card.

As always, contact your child’s teacher with specific questions. “The great thing about Common Core and the way teachers will now be assessing students is that there is a big-picture goal in mind,” says Huntington. “This creates a perfect opportunity to notice your child’s strengths and progress, while keeping an eye on areas to work on.”

Award Winners Announced who recognized the desperate need among parents for Common Core math module resources (support) to help their children at home with the new math curriculum. While Hauppauge and many other Long Island school districts have held Parent Information Nights, Dr. Murphy and Mr. Licht decided to collaborate and invite other Long Island school districts to join in and to build a library of support videos that would be: • Aligned to the NYS common core math curriculum, and specifically, the modules available at engageny.org • Publically available to all students, parents, etc. • Easily searched on iPads, PCs, phones, etc. • Linked to other

Internet support resources. Multiple YouTube videos are currently available to help parents and children in their struggle with the Common Core curriculum. The initial video library was presented at the July 23rd meeting. “We provided an overview of the ccvidhelp initiative, outlining many of the details while providing demonstrations of the various technologies employed to create, edit and host the tutorial videos,” stated Dr. Murphy. “Attendees were very enthusiastic, and some signed up right away to join us in our efforts. Going forward, we will continue to build our video library with the goal of creating math videos that align to the Common Core Math Modules for Grades K-9 over time.”

Dr. Donald Murphy, director of Mathematics and Information Systems, Hauppauge School District, and Marc Licht, director of Technology, Mineola UFSD, presented the initial YouTube library of the Common Core Video Help Initiative Project (ccvidhelp) to more than 40 teachers and administrators representing 20 Long Island school districts on January 23rd in the Hauppauge School District Board of Education Room. ccvidhelp is a grass roots initiative created to provide students and parents with the support they need for Common Core mathematics in grades K through 9. ccvidhelp started organically through conversations between Dr. Murphy and Mr. Licht

On January 19th, New York City FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), along with School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) presented the FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifying Tournament at Hewlett High School in Hewlett, New York. Twenty teams from Long Island and the metropolitan New York area took part in the daylong competition. The FTC is a program through FIRST, which is an organization that focuses on teaching children and young adults STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills

through stimulating robotics competitions. The FTC tournament requires students in grades seven through twelve to design, build, and program a robot to compete with in an alliance format against other teams. Each year, a different themed challenge is presented to those who participate in the tournament. The challenge was “FTC® BLOCK PARTY! SM,” in which Alliances of two teams programmed their robots to place plastic blocks onto pendulum goals. During each twoand-a-half minute match, teams also had to raise their team flag up a flagpole, elevate their robots off the ground using

a platform pull-up bar, and finish the match with a balanced pendulum to earn extra points. Following the tournament, an award ceremony was presented by the FIRST judges. Different teams won trophies for various categories that represented a range of qualities, such as teamwork, creativity, and inspiration.

Association’s solution to save women’s lives. The Go Red For Women movement, sponsored nationally by Macys urges women to take charge of their cardiovascular health, make it a top priority and live a stronger, longer life. The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System is the Cities Go Red Sponsor for the movement. Every minute in the United States, someone’s wife, mother, daughter or sister dies from heart disease, stroke or other form of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women age 25 and older and stroke is the No. 4 killer of women, as women account for 61 percent of all stroke deaths annually. The American Heart Association Go Red For Women movement is about turning around these statistics. It’s also about resources, information and hope. Donations to Go Red For Women help support our efforts to educate women and to fund breakthrough research by the American Heart Association that helps ensure women are represented in clinical studies. For more than 10 years, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. More than 650,000 women’s lives have been saved, but the fight is far from over. On February 7th, or on a different day if you wish, you and your colleagues are encouraged to wear red (and dress down if your company allows) and each donate $5 or more. As a thank you for their support, each

Mall and points in between starting at 7:20 a.m. The last campus pick up on Sundays is at 6:30 p.m. Suffolk County Transit and Stony Brook University started this partnership in May of 2012 after students on the Transportation & Parking Student Advisory Committee requested increased off-campus transportation. “After successfully providing this public transportation option over the past 18-months, it seemed appropriate to work with Suffolk County to expand these services for our students on Sundays,”

Doggie U K9 Academy recently opened their doors to the Bay Shore High School for a field trip for the school’s Special Education students. Twelve students spent part of their day at Doggie U observing the dog agility class and got to watch the dogs do a full run through of the course. There were many questions from the students to Doggie U’s trainers like: how they got

the dogs to do each specific task; how they train them to go jump through hoops; go through the course and many more. “It was a great day at Doggie U where we could demonstrate to the high school students that even dogs and handlers can have a difficult time learning, but with persistence and practice they do succeed,” said co-owner Ginny Anziani of Doggie U K9 Academy. “We had a lot

of fun teaching the kids, about how dogs learn and interact with their handlers and look forward to having the students back again.” This was the second time the Bay Shore High School came to Doggie U K9 Academy as of one of the many ways Doggie U is proactive in the community. To find out more or how your organization can get involved, contact Doggie U at 631.968.7972.

Lilacs Shout By: Milicent G. Tycko, Stony Brook

Unbelievable That in the midst of dry brown pine needles And ice-etched frost pools of fallen leaves There dares to stand now A new crocus blown To full purple

Which leads the doubter further Towards the worn out tangle of Wildrose branches Hanging sullen after Winter’s wild beating In which a wooden tub was placed Containing last year’s lilac plant A brittle barren stand of sticks Near to spruce and hidden by pine Supported by a mound of snow For shelter’s sake

“Some Big, Some Small, Some Fall” Photo by: Mike Missano, North Babylon

Unbelievable That now When finger cracks through crusty films Of frost to find Stored cold water And all the yard is mud The wooden tub of sticks Proclaims I am and will be more For see the pulpy buds I raised While you bemoaned the winter’s wild Soon these juicy tips will burst And lilacs, lilacs, lilacs shout And that’s what Nature’s all about. places, such as a feature wall or statement piece of furniture, color can have a big impact in a small space.” Bromstad offers these color tips for transforming a space from tiny to airy: Create a focal point with paint. Paint a statement wall that draws attention away from the size of your space and toward something beautiful and vibrant. Bright or bold colors work well, as the wall can appear to recede,

creating the illusion of space. Go big with lighter and softer colors. In areas beyond the feature wall, use lighter and softer colors to make the space seem larger. Light blues and greens add significant light subtly to a room. Coordinate your colors. Stretch your space and maximize impact by using color to coordinate your rooms and decor. coordinated collections of color, paint and wallpaper. The color palettes can be used to ensure that your walls, furniture and accessories help create a cohesive look. Reflect upon something. Placed opposite a window or side by side, mirrors can spread light throughout the room to make spaces feel larger. A tall mirror draws the eye up, making ceilings look taller. When angled toward your room’s focal wall, a mirror can

also create the illusion of depth. Paint something unexpected. Think beyond your walls and consider painting your mailbox or address numbers on your home, a stairway banister or a piece of furniture. Add a colorful punctuation point by transforming a bedroom nightstand bright blue or a desk chair in an unexpected orange. Everything else in the room will appear larger. “Clever use of color adds

the illusion of space and injects personality into it as well. That’s what’s great about color; you can dramatically alter the look of a room while expressing yourself in a fun way,” Bromstad adds. ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million

free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free

credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports
