Seaford Welcomes Its New Class Of Educators
SEAFORD - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2026 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM
Seaford’s newest educators gathered at Seaford High School for new teacher and administrator orientation on Aug. 19. Photos courtesy of the Seaford School District It wasn’t the first day of school for students, but Aug. 19 marked the first day for nearly 30 new teachers in the Seaford School District. The firstyear faculty members gathered in the Seaford High School library for new teacher orientation and a thorough introduction to the district. After welcoming remarks from Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora and Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Instructional Support
Dr. Sheena Jacob, it was time for a long-standing tradition. New teachers boarded a yellow school bus for an hour-long trip around the district, guided by Dr. Jacob. The tour included Seaford Middle School, Harbor and Manor elementary schools, and other notable Seaford landmarks. This year’s new faculty members will work across the district, teaching a variety of grade levels and subject areas. They were chosen, in some cases,
from among hundreds of applicants and went through a rigorous hiring process. Also taking part in orientation were a trio of new administrators, who joined the district in July. The two-day orientation program included information sessions on curriculum, technology and the Seaford Scholars profile, meetings with their respective building administrators and a welcome from United Teachers of Seaford.
New teachers, from left, Kevin Morissey, Thomas Farragher, Graceann Proletti, Angela LaBoccetta and Kaitlynn D’Angelo showed their tickets as they prepared to board a bus for a tour of the Seaford School District.
Labor Day Safety Tips For A Safe End To Summer Labor Day, Monday, September 7, offers one last long weekend for barbecues, pool parties and outdoor fun. While summer officially continues through September 22, the holiday is considered the unofficial end of summer. Keep these safety tips in mind: • Leave fireworks to professionals. Sparklers can reach temperatures of about 2,000 F and should not be handled by children. • Don’t drink and drive. Arrange for a designated driver, taxi or rideshare if consuming alcohol or using marijuana. • Practice water safety. Closely supervise children
around pools and other bodies of water, and swim only where lifeguards are present. • Use sunscreen. Protect your skin from harmful UV rays and reapply sunscreen after swimming or sweating. • Prevent food poisoning. Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold, and use a meat thermometer to ensure food reaches a safe temperature. • Protect pets. Keep pets secure around crowds and loud noises, and make sure they have identification or a microchip in case they escape.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board have announced a partnership with Massapequabased “Big Hy for Heroes” to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces as well as movies for children’s hospitals. Donations will be accepted during the month of September and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is

Help support these brave men, women and children by donating DVDs.” The Big Hy for Heroes organization was founded in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to U.S. troops overseas. Over the years, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world
and continues to do so today. Exciting, suspenseful, comedy and classic DVDs are among the most requested by the troops for movie nights. Children’s movies are needed for local hospitals. PSEG Long Island Reminds Customers: Scammers Don’t Take Summer Off As backyard barbecues begin to give way to backto-school nights, scammers continue to ratchet up the stress by impersonating utility workers via phone and sometimes in person to demand payments from their victims. PSEG Long Island urges customers to take the right steps if confronted with a surprise visit or call threatening imminent shutoff: Stop and verify before acting. Reach out to PSEG Long Island for confirmation. “If someone threatens to immediately shut off your power, check your account online or call the number that’s printed on your bill to double check before giving them any money,” said Lou DeBrino, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Customer Operations. “It may be an advanced digital scam, an in-person scammer or a telephone call, but nearly all scammers present
an urgent problem in the hopes that their victims panic and miss all the clues that they’re not who they appear to be. All you need to do is contact PSEG Long Island independently and verify before acting.” Many utility scammers demand immediate payment via web-based electronic payment services. PSEG Long Island does not accept external, web-based electronic payment services (outside of payments through My Account) as a method of payment. What customers should know about payment scams • Scammers impersonating PSEG Long Island most frequently threaten to shut off power immediately unless payment is made. • Many scammers use
phone “spoofing” technology to make their number display on your phone as “PSEG Long Island.” • PSEG Long Island will never request that

flashing a fake ID and/ or claiming to be a utility collection representative. The impostors may wear “uniforms” or affix false company signs to their vehicles. The scammers generally ask for personal information, which real utility representatives do not do, or offer bogus discounts. Again, if customers have any doubts, they should not let the person in, and should call 1-800-490-0025 to verify. PSEG Long Island employees must carry a company ID and present it when requested. If customers have doubts, they should not let the person into the house. PSEG Long Island employees are trained not to escalate the situation. If the person escalates their efforts to enter the home, customers should consider calling 911.
