The Results Are In: Massapequa Athletics Among The Very Best A dominant year of athletic excellence for the Massapequa School District was recently recognized by both state and national organizations, placing the Chiefs among the top high school athletic programs in New York and the United States. The Massapequa Chiefs finished as New York State’s top-ranked Class AAA athletic program and the No. 1 boys sports program in the state, earning runner-up honors for the 2026 Kerr Cup All-Sport Championship. Presented by the New York State Sports Writers Association, the award ranks high school athletic programs based on postseason success. Massapequa placed second overall in New York State, finishing just behind Rye High School in total points. Massapequa’s success was also recognized on the national stage through the MaxPreps Cup, which recognizes the best high

school sports programs in the country and awards points for state championships, runner-up finishes and national rankings based on size of state, popularity of the sport, size of school and number of teams in each playoff division. Massapequa ranked second overall among all schools in New York State, while the boys athletics program was the highest-scoring in New York and ninth in the nation. Further highlighting the district’s commitment to excellence both on the field and in the classroom, Massapequa High School was also named a 20252026 School of Distinction from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. This honor is presented to schools in which 100% of varsity teams earn Scholar-Athlete status during their respective sports season. All 33 of Massapequa’s varsity teams achieved a GPA of 90 or higher. Massapequa’s varsity

teams earned multiple championships in the 20252026 school year: Fall season: Boys volleyball, state champions; football, Long Island champions; and field hockey, county champions. Winter season: boys wrestling, state dual-meet champions; gymnastics, county champions; and

girls winter track, county champions. Spring season: Baseball, state champions; boys lacrosse, state champions; softball Long Island champions; girls lacrosse, county champions; and girls track and field, county champions. “I am simply in awe of what our student athletes, coaches

and entire athletic program continue to accomplish,” Superintendent Dr. William Brennan said. “From state championships and national recognition to excellence in the classroom, our student athletes represent the very best of Massapequa. This success reflects the incredible talent and determination of our

student athletes, the culture of excellence developed by our coaches and athletic administration, and the tremendous support of our families and community programs. I cannot be prouder of the way our student athletes represent Massapequa with excellence, character and pride.”

Massapequa Seniors Tapped For Board Of Education Role

MASSAPEQUA - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2026 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM

The Massapequa School District Board of Education recently welcomed its second pair of student members who will serve throughout the 2026-2027 school year. Massapequa High School seniors Antonio Del Maestro and Melissa Stalzer were sworn in as the ex officio student board members at the July 9 reorganization

meeting. The position was introduced last year. As ex officio members, Antonio and Melissa do not vote or attend executive sessions, but they give a report at each meeting on student happenings throughout the district. Their first update on July 9 included a recap of graduation and other year-

end events. Antonio, who attended Birch Lane Elementary School, is the high school general organization president and a member of mock trial, varsity bowling and the Shared DecisionMaking Committee. He has been involved in student government since eight grade and was interested

in the board position to advance his leadership skills. “I’m looking forward to serving as a bridge between the school board and student body to communicate the ideas of the students to the board” Antonio said. Melissa, a Fairfield Elementary School graduate, belongs to Best Buddies and Challenger Athletics. She applied for the student member role to help bring the opinions and

perspectives of the students to the district’s decisionmakers. “I wanted to try something new and take on a leadership position,” she said. After high school, Antonio wants to study finance and eventually attend law school, and Melissa wants to become a special education teacher. Superintendent Dr. William Brennan said they were chosen for the role from among 21 applicants.

“We are delighted to welcome Antonio and Melissa, two proven student leaders, to serve as our ex officio student members on the board of education for the next year,” Dr. Brennan said. “The board trustees and the central office team look forward to their insights and updates and are confident they will follow the high standard set by our inaugural student members last year.”

Middle school students from the Massapequa School District enjoyed the summer vibes with friends old and new for the past five weeks. The Summer Recreation program’s Teen Center, which took place at the Massapequa High School Ames Campus, ran

from June 30 to July 31 for students entering grades 6-8. Supervised by a director, certified teachers and college assistants, students were able to choose their daily activities. The Teen Center is designed to be less structured than the

elementary program to recognize the increased independence students have upon reaching middle school. The different centers they could visit included arts and crafts, a game room, movie room, and indoor and outdoor sports.

The Teen Center was open to Massapequa students entering grades 6-8.

There were also several special events and field trips. Students enjoyed milkshake Mondays, snack shack Tuesdays with hot dogs, chicken nuggets and French fries, and pizza Fridays. They ventured to arcade centers Main Event and Round One. July 30, the

second-to-last-day of camp, featured a block party with a basketball competition, kickball, tug-of-war and water balloon toss, as well as cotton candy, a photo booth and dunk tank. Students competed as they were split into the blue, green, red and yellow teams.

Each week averaged a little more than 100 participants, with a peak of 130. Rising sixth graders benefitted from interacting with seventh and eighth graders and establishing friendships with their future Berner Middle School peers.
