IS THE NEW YEAR A GOOD TIME FOR A NEW CAR? Many people like to begin the new year with a fresh start, making resolutions to change bad habits and improve their overall health. Others may be interested in changes they can make that will present new opportunities, such as career goals or relocating.

While health- and careerrelated resolutions are popular come the dawn of a new year, many men and women also ponder the benefits of buying a new car when the calendar year starts anew. Professionals in the automotive industry do not always agree as to when is the best time to buy a new or preowned car. Some will tell you to shop on rainy days or near closing time from the dealership, and some shoppers insist that they will only buy a new car at the end of a month.

Unfortunately, there is no magical day when buyers are guaranteed to get the best bargains on new or preowned automobiles. Oftentimes, the best time to buy a new car is when buyers are in the best financial position to make such purchases.

For a variety of reasons, the dawn of a new year may be a good time to buy a new vehicle. With the holidays behind them, buyers may have more disposable income to put toward down payments.

Cash gifts received from friends and family during the holidays can go a long way toward financing a new vehicle purchase. What’s more, many businesses give their employees year-end bonuses as a token of appreciation for a year of hard work. When all of these financial factors are put together, buyers may find the new year is a great time to buy a new car.

New model year vehicles will need homes on dealers’ lots, motivating dealers to mark down last year’s models at consumerfriendly prices. hile summer might be the season most associated with vacation, winter also is a great time of year to leave everything behind. Winter break at the kids’ school and time off from the office around the holiday season make winter a great time to get away.

But planning a winter vacation is different than planning one for the summer. The following are a few pointers to ensure your winter escape goes off without a hitch...

Families should check with their local school district to confirm when the school or schools are having their winter break. Such information might be available on the district’s or school’s website before the school year even begins, allowing parents to plan their trip months in advance. College students often have longer winter breaks, so they should be free to travel. But confirm the dates of their winter break as well.

No parent wants to book a trip only to discover that vacation is forcing a child to miss school and possibly fall behind in the classroom.

PACK ACCORDINGLY When traveling in the summer, it’s often unnecessary to pack items like sweaters or overcoats. However, traveling in the winter, even if your destination is a warm beach, mandates such items for anyone living in a locale where winter weather dips below freezing. You won’t want to return home in flip flops and tank tops if the temperature outside is frigid.

When packing, it’s also good to note that items like sweaters and coats take up more space than T-shirts and bathing suits.

Consider this when packing and factor in how larger suitcases may affect your traveling budget if you’re traveling by air and your chosen airline charges for excess baggage.

EXPECT DELAYS The weather is not often a consideration when traveling in the summer, when the skies are generally clear and the roads are not delayed by things like snowstorms or poor road conditions.

However, winter traveling might be affected by inclement weather. Consider the weather when traveling to and from the airport, checking the forecast the night before your trip to determine when you should leave for the airport. Such delays also can influence security lines at the airport, which may have more people to accommodate if flights have been cancelled or postponed.

KEEP WEATHER IN MIND WHEN RESERVING A RENTAL CAR Travelers, and families in particular, typically rent a vehicle while on vacation. When vacationing in the winter at a ski resort or another area with winter weather, rent a sport utility vehicle or a car with all-wheel or four-wheel drive. Such rentals may be more expensive than renting economy cars or mid-sized sedans, but they’re also more capable of handling winter roads and winter weather.

DINING DECISIONS CHOOSING THE RIGHT RESTAURANT

etting together with family and friends for a good meal is a great opportunity to reconnect and share a few laughs. Though such gatherings have traditionally taken place at private homes, today’s busy adults are increasingly turning to restaurants to host their mini reunions. Restaurants don’t require hosts and guests to wash any dishes, and hosts won’t have to find time to clean their homes top to bottom like they would if they were to have a party at home. Such a reality makes a dinner party at a local restaurant a lot less stressful for the hosts. There are a number of things to emphasize when looking for the right restaurant to host the next dinner party.

PROXIMITY Whether entertaining family and friends or a business dinner, the restaurant where you will be gathering should be easily accessible to all people who plan to attend. A centrally located restaurant that’s only a short drive for guests and hosts alike is ideal, as it cuts back on the time people will spend driving to and from the restaurant. Try to accommodate those guests who don’t drive by choosing a restaurant that’s accessible via public transportation.

PRICE Perhaps the only downside to hosting a dinner party at a restaurant is that such gatherings tend to be more expensive than parties at private residences. Hosts should first determine who will be paying the bill. If everyone has agreed to pay their own portion of the bill, this gives you a little more flexibility when choosing a restaurant. If you, as the host, intend to pick up the tab for everyone, then you

might want to find a nice restaurant with reasonably priced entrees. A five-star restaurant might break the bank, but you might be able to find a three- or four-star restaurant that’s still elegant and more affordable.

If each guest intends to pay for his or her own meal, discuss with guests how much they would like to spend before making a reservation. Once you have an idea of what everyone is willing to spend, you can start to narrow down your options.

MENU The menu is an important thing for hosts to consider when choosing a restaurant for their next dinner party. Many men and women adhere to certain diets or lifestyles that restrict what they can and cannot eat, and you will want to find a restaurant that can cater to as many of your guests’ needs as possible. Discuss any dietary restrictions with your guests before you begin the process of finding a restaurant. If the responses are slow to come in, you can still go ahead with your search, but look for restaurants that offer vegetarian and gluten-free fare.

When examining the menu, take into consideration any offerings for kids if any guests are planning to bring their children along. Kids tend to prefer chicken fingers and fries over filet mignon and baked potatoes, so the restaurant should have some menu items for young children if kids will be joining in the festivities.

ACCESSIBILITY When looking for a restaurant, try to find one that’s easily accessible for any older guests who might not get around as easily as they used to or any guests who might have a disability that requires handicap accessible seating and restrooms. Many restaurants can fill both of these needs, but it’s still up to hosts to ask in advance so all guests have a comfortable evening.

The parking lot should not be too far away, but if it is, ask the restaurant manager if valet service is available for those guests who might prefer it.

A dinner party at a restaurant with family, friends or even professional colleagues often makes for an enjoyable evening for guests and hosts alike. But hosts must consider several factors before ultimately choosing where they and their guests will dine.

BOUQUET Nowadays, the bride carries a beautiful bouquet of flowers. But the purpose of the bouquet held different meanings in the past. Saracen brides carried orange blossoms for fertility. Others carried a combination of herbs and flowers to ward off evil spirits with their aroma. Bouquets of dill were often carried, again for fertility reasons, and after the ceremony, the dill was eaten to encourage lust.

The bride wears a veil, a court of wedding attendants accompanies the bride and groom, and birdseed, rice or flower petals are tossed. But have you ever wondered why? The wedding customs are ripe with tradition and harken back to days when superstition and myth often ruled the day.

THROWING RICE Today it has become de rigueur to blow bubbles, toss birdseed or release doves when the bride and groom leave the house of worship newly betrothed. That’s because savvy individuals found that raw rice can pose a hazard to birds pecking in the area. However, rice throwing is an old custom that dates back to the Middle

FATHER ACCOMPANYING THE BRIDE This tradition symbolizes that the bride’s father endorses the choice in husbands and is presenting his daughter as a pure bride to that man.

KISSING THE BRIDE In older times, a kiss symbolized a legal bond. Therefore, the bride and groom kissed to seal the deal on their betrothal.

There may be arguments over dresses and how many bridesmaids to have in a wedding party now, but in ancient times it was “the more the merrier.” That’s because bridesmaids were another measure to keep the bride safe against evil spirits. Essentially the bridesmaids were decoys for the spirits - dressing like the bride to confuse the spirits or maybe help deter them to leave the bride be.

WEDDING RINGS Wearing of wedding rings dates back to ancient Egypt. The round shape of a ring symbolizes eternal love. The ring is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it is believed this finger has a blood vessel that goes directly to the heart.

WEDDING CAKE The traditional wedding cake evolved from Roman times when the cake was originally made from wheat. It was broken over the bride’s head to ensure fertility. All of the guests eat a piece for good luck. Single women used to place

H

osting a party at home can be a great way to get together with family and friends. But hosting is also a big responsibility that requires lots of pre-party planning and preparation.

Part of that preparation involves stocking up on musthave items so you can ensure you and your guests’ needs are met once the party starts.

When taking inventory of your supplies, it helps to break things down into categories and make a list of what you need by category. This can make your supply shopping trip that much easier.

KITCHENWARE Unless you’re hosting a cocktail party, you’re going to need more than just glasses come the big day. How much kitchenware you will need depends on how many guests will be attending, but be sure to have enough plates, utensils, napkins (cloth napkins for more formal affairs), cocktail napkins, serving bowls and glasses (for wine, water, cocktails, beer, coffee, tea, soda, etc.).

FOOD & BEVERAGE You can never have too much water on hand for your guests. That’s especially true when hosting a party in the summertime. In addition to water, if you will be serving alcohol, make sure you have both red and white wine, beer, liquor to prepare mixed drinks or cocktails, and soda for guests who will not be imbibing. will be outdoors, where even beverages in coolers can quickly get warm during the hotter months.

When buying food, buy enough so no one goes home hungry at the end of the night.

Main course leftovers can also be placed in doggie bags and taken home by your guests.

In addition, be sure to have plenty of snacks on hand in case the main course takes longer to cook than originally anticipated. Stock up on standard fare like chips and pretzels, but have gluten-free snacks and healthier fare like fruits and veggies so guests on special diets won’t go hungry.

FURNITURE Whether hosting indoors or outdoors, make sure you have enough furniture so no one is left standing for most of the party. Some extra folding chairs might be enough when hosting an indoor affair, while some additional patio furniture should suffice for outdoor parties. When hosting outside, be sure to clean any patio furniture before guests arrive.

START OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT

t the dawn of a new calendar year, many people decide it’s time to turn over a new leaf and shed those extra pounds that accumulated over the previous 12 months. The resolve to lose weight is perhaps never stronger than at the beginning of a calendar year, when the holiday season has passed but those added inches on the waistline remain.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Exercising after a long hiatus from routine exercise won’t be easy, and your body is likely going to tell you that through certain aches and pains, if not nausea, dizziness or shortness of breath. If any of these symptoms appear, take a break.

This could be your body telling you that you’re asking too much and you need to take your foot off the gas pedal for a little while.

Though it’s noble to want to lose weight and improve health, regardless of what time of year it is, there are precautions men and women should take before beginning a new exercise regimen.

CONSIDER HIRING A PERSONAL TRAINER

to stretch and not push yourself. This selfassessment should not be demanding.

Instead, the goal is to gauge where you are and how your body feels when doing some simple exercises.

ESTABLISH YOUR GOALS

VISIT YOUR PHYSICIAN It’s best to get a full physical before beginning an exercise regimen. A full physical can reveal if you have any health problems that might limit what you should and shouldn’t be doing at the gym. If anything turns up, your physician can develop a plan of attack for you to address the issue. If nothing turns up, then your doctor will probably give you the green light to go forward with few, if any, limitations.

CONDUCT A SELF-ASSESSMENT Once you’ve visited the doctor and received the go-ahead to start working out, do an honest self-assessment to see where you are in terms of fitness. However, there are other incentives as well. For example, some people might be starting to train for a marathon or another sporting event. Whatever the reason, know why you’re getting started, as such goals can help you monitor your progress as the year goes on.

Many people are overwhelmed when entering a gym after a long time away. If you find yourself intimidated or simply don’t know where to begin, hire a personal trainer. Many charge by-the-session, so you can learn which machines to use and how to use them after a session or two and then continue working out on your own. If joining a gym as a new member, the gym might offer a couple of complementary personal training sessions. If so, take full advantage of this offer.

When beginning a new exercise regimen, don’t forget to let caution reign until your body has adjusted to this healthy lifestyle.

Frequency of sessions can increase as your body gets acclimated, but at first allow a day or two between sessions so your body can recover.

Embrace organic pet foods. Pet foods have evolved considerably over the last several decades, and pet owners now have more healthy options at their disposal.

Organic pet foods make for healthier alternatives for pets, eliminating the buildup of residues of chemical additives, pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in pets.

Many traditional pet shampoos or pet beauty products are laced with chemicals, and such ingredients can have an adverse effect on pet health while also harming the environment. Nontoxic grooming products can still give pets’ coats a beautiful shine, but they do so without taking a toll on the planet or the animal’s health.

Though certain roof issues, like shingles lost to inclement weather, are unforeseeable, many problems can be avoided with routine roof inspection.

Checking roof conditions twice a year can help homeowners avoid potentially costly repair work or even more expensive roof replacement projects.

Spring is a good time to inspect roofs, which are often at the mercy of harsh conditions throughout the winter. Heavy snow, ice and biting winds can do significant damage, making spring the perfect time to assess if any such damage occurred and address any issues.

Start the inspection in the interior of the home. Before breaking out the ladder and climbing up to the roof, inspect the home’s interior, pinpointing potential problems that may indicate roof damage. Check for stains on the ceiling, which may indicate leaks that need to be addressed. Homeowners with attics should enter their attics and look for signs of water damage, making note of any damp or wet insulation.

This will let you know if water has been entering the attic all winter. Pay attention to the location of any wet spots or stains so you can match them up to the exterior of the roof later on. Musty smells also may be indicative of moisture problems, even if there are no visible leaks.

Inspect the roof outside. Grab a set of binoculars and inspect the exterior of the roof. Look at the roof flashing, including around the chimney and other

areas of protruding pipes and vents. If the flashing is warped or damaged, moisture might be settling underneath. Sealant around dormers or skylights can also degrade, resulting in leaks.

Check for spalling on masonry, such as the mortar of chimneys.

Porous areas will allow water to infiltrate.

Go directly on the roof and check. Work with a partner and carefully climb on the roof while someone holds the ladder below. Walk on the perimeter of the roof, looking for peeling or warped shingles, missing shingles, holes or scrapes. If the roof is compromised in any way, it will need to be repaired.

The problem will only grow more significant and repairs more expensive if damage is ignored. Sometimes a repair can be as simple as patching a leak with a new shingle and roofing cement. Popped nails can be pounded down, and any curled shingles can be nailed or cemented back into place.

Consult a roofing expert.

If you are unsure if your roof has made it through the winter unscathed and would like a second opinion, or if you find there is considerable damage, contact a roofing contractor. This person will offer a professional assessment of what can be repaired or if the roof should be replaced. If your roof is metal or features clay tiles, you may not have the expertise to make repairs yourself and will need to hire a professional.

Check the gutters, too. While you are up on the roof, inspect the gutters and downspouts as well. Cracked or damaged gutters will cause water to leak down the side of the home, potentially damaging the foundation. Clear any debris or leftover leaves from the gutters to ensure the rain can wash through unobstructed.

1. Put the beef in the bowl of a stand mixer or in a large mixing bowl.

2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute to release its fragrance. Add the onion and celery and cook, stirring often, for about 3 minutes, or until tender. Let cool.

3. Combine the bread crumbs and milk in a small bowl. Let sit for about 10 minutes, or until the bread crumbs absorb the milk.

4. Whisk together the eggs, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, paprika, cayenne pepper, cumin, celery seeds, allspice and nutmeg in a small bowl. Pour over the beef. Add the vegetable mixture and the soaked bread crumbs. Mix with the paddle attachment on low speed or with your hands until the beef is evenly distributed. Be careful not to overmix.

BEGIN THE NEW YEAR IN A NEW HOME After flatlining during the economic downturn that began around 2008, housing markets in many regions of the United States and Canada have shown signs of recovery. Those in the market to buy and sell may find this year presents an ideal opportunity to do just that.

According to the real estate listing website Zillow, home values rose 5.1 percent across the United States between February 2012 and February 2013. The latest forecasts from Canada Mortage and Housing Corporation indicate a strong housing demand into 2014, at which time a strengthened economy will energize both resale and new housing markets.

Buyers will need to be prepared to purchase inventory right away, while sellers will need to price their homes right for the best chance of sale. The following are some guidelines.

Buyers: Having a plan is essential when buying a home,

as such a purchase is not something buyers should take lightly. Establishing a budget is the first step. This means taking inventory of savings, expenses and borrowing power.

It is adviseable to sit down with a lender and do a runthrough of what you can afford.

By providing key financial information, including earning statements, existing debt and credit history, buyers can quickly learn how much they’re qualified to borrow and how much they are comfortable borrowing. This helps buyers zero in on homes in their price range.

Being pre-approved for a mortgage is advantageous when it comes time to make offers on properties. It shows sellers that buyers are serious and that they have been vetted by the bank.

Many buyers conduct a lot of research online prior to stepping into a home. This research lasts an average of six to eight weeks, according

1. Heat 1/4 cup of the oil in a heavy-bottomed, 8-quart pot over medium heat. Add the chicken, chili powder and cumin seeds and saute until the chicken is cooked through, 4 to 6 minutes. Transfer the meat to a bowl and set aside.

2. Return the pot to the heat, add the remaining 1/4 cup of oil, and cook the onions, poblanos, bell pepper, chipotles and garlic, stirring frequently, until the onions start to brown. Stir in the beans with their liquid, tomatoes and corn, and return the cooked chicken with all its juices. Turn the heat down to low and simmer, stirring every 5 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through and tender, about 25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

3. In a large bowl, combine the avocado, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, lime juice, jalapenos and salt. Set aside.

4. To serve, ladle the chili into bowls and top with the salsa and cheeses.
