Welcome Spring! We hope you are enjoying the mild temperatures and blossoming flowers after the long Winter we experienced. There is something about this season of revitalization that brings a sense of renewal and growth to everything, life on Long Island included. In keeping with that theme, we have chosen to highlight several topics in this issue, from healthy eating tips to methods of combatting stress to exercise tips for those looking to get in shape for the upcoming summer bathing suit season. Hungry for a new recipe to try? We have a scrumptious Rack of Lamb dish, as well as a new spin on Barbeque Chicken Wings with Bleu Cheese Dressing. These may not help cut the calories, but we all deserve to indulge a little from time to time! Of course, Spring is also the season for Mother’s and Father’s Day celebrations and Memorial Day, the unofficial kickoff to the summer barbeque season - plenty of opportunities for fun family gatherings and outings with friends and neighbors. Time to shake off that Winter hibernation! Be sure to check out our Spring Scene, just a small sampling of all the activities taking place this season on Long Island, from the Jones Beach Air Show to Restaurant Week, as well as an array of Spring fairs in many local communities and festivals for every special interest. Our Spring on Long Island section has returned, featuring photographs submitted by our loyal readers, highlighting the loveliness of this season on our shores. Please feel free to submit your Summer photos for consideration in our next issue to: Editorial@SeasonsMagazineOnline. com by May 20th. Tackle Wardrobe Organization this Spring A task to tackle as spring settles in is sorting through wardrobes and making room for new clothes, as extra clothing can quickly take over a home. In fact, according to the National Association of Professional Organizers, too much clutter, general disorganization and difficulty determining what to keep and/or discard are the primary reasons individuals reach out to professional organizers. If clearing away closet clutter is on the top of your winter to-do list, consider the following tips:
Receive a free gift of a pair of Brighton earrings with a single, same day purchase of a Brighton necklace and bracelet.
Know what you have. It’s easier to determine what you can keep and what you can donate or discard when you have an idea of what’s in your closet. Take all of your clothes out of closets and drawers and place them on the bed or floor. Clean the closets thoroughly. A yearly and thorough cleaning of closets is suggested. This includes dusting shelving and vacuuming the floor of the closet. You can do the same with armoires and dresser drawers.
255 Deer Park Ave. Suite 2 • Babylon Village • 631.669.5196 Tues., Wed., Fri., Sat. 10:00am-5:30pm • Thurs. 10:00am-7:30pm • Sun. 11:00am-4:00pm • Closed Monday
Shop our online store at www.roomorsgifts.com *Free earrings must be of EQUAL or LESSER VALUE to the highest priced item purchased. Limited to stock on hand. Charm jewelry excluded. Necklace & bracelet must be purchased in the same transaction. (Prior purchases excluded.) At participating retailers only.
Take inventory of your clothing. Create three main sorting piles. Label one “keep,” another “donate” and the third one “sell.” As you look at your clothing, keep only those items that fit you well and suit both your tastes and your lifestyle. If a piece is high-quality and worth the cost of repair, bring it to a tailor or make the modifications yourself. Let go of items you never wear or those you bought on a whim because you wanted to try something trendy. In addition, figure out which type of clothing best suits your lifestyle. If you have 10 pairs of yoga pants but never hit the gym, you can thin out that collection. Immediately bag donation items. Move items you will be donating out of the room. Place them by the front door and make a plan to drop them off at a thrift store or in a nearby clothing bin.

Tips for Dining Out on Mother’s Day Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family. A vast number of families travel to their favorite restaurants for Mother’s Day meals. Mother’s Day is one of the busiest holidays of the year for restaurants. The National Retail Federation says 54.8 percent of Americans treat their mothers to a special meal out on Mother’s Day. Billions of dollars are generated by people eating out with their mothers. With large crowds to be expected, diners can follow a few tips when treating Mom to a meal:
&
Book early ... very early. To guarantee a reservation at any restaurant, namely your favorite
restaurant, you will need to make a reservation well in advance of Mother’s Day. It’s never too early to put your name on the reservation list. Don’t forget Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 8th, 2016.
and the ability to order whatever you desire, it may be a better idea to celebrate Mother’s Day in advance. Then have Mom enjoy a relaxing day at home on her special day.
Expect to wait. Even with a reservation, you’re bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door. Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave. Don’t arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is not a good way to celebrate Mom. Have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for young children, as well as activities to keep them entertained.
Take-out is an option. Families can treat Mom to a dinner out, without really having to go out. Many restaurants offer takeout service, so you will not be limited to pizza or Chinese. Even chain restaurants have curbside service, so if Mom is in the mood for a burger or something more elaborate, she’ll have that option.
Consider dining out a day before or after. Restaurants are generally packed on Mother’s Day, and as a result, kitchen and wait staffs might be overtaxed. What’s more, diners might be relegated to a special or abbreviated menu. If you want a more relaxed setting
KITCHEN BATH DESIGNS
THE AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVE
Expect an included gratuity. Restaurants often include a gratuity in the bill when servicing larger parties, such as those that might be celebrating Mother’s Day. The standard gratuity rate is 18 percent, but you
may want to go above and beyond if you feel the service is exemplary. Hire a sitter for young kids. Although Mother’s Day is a chance for the entire family to spend time together, the main goal is to ensure Mom’s comfort and happiness. If very young children are in tow, she may not be able to relax and enjoy her meal. Infants will need to be
fed, and toddlers may be easily distracted. Have a sitter watch little ones when adults are dining out, and then Mom can enjoy time with the kids when she returns home for more celebrating.

Include Good Fats & Carbs in a Healthy Eating Plan Come the spring season, many people resolve to rest, recharge and get back to healthy eating habits. Time magazine reports that losing weight and getting fit are the most popular New Year’s resolutions, but also the ones that people are most likely to abandon after a short time. That may be because New Year’s dieters are too often choosing diets that are impractical and not conducive to long-term success. Some may stop eating certain foods or ingredients entirely, while others look to diets that require a level of commitment beyond busy adults’ capabilities. Many fad diets target fat and carbohydrates, but dieters may not know that fat and carbs are necessary for a healthy metabolism. According to Dr. Walter Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health, low-fat diets don’t work for many people. In fact, dozens of studies have found that low-fat diets are no more healthy than moderate- or high-fat diets and may, in fact, be worse. Foods that are low in fat may be full of ingredients that can be detrimental when eaten in high amounts. Processed low-fat foods can be made to taste better with copious amounts of salt or sugar. Some low-fat foods are actually high in simple carbohydrates, which can cause spikes in blood sugar and increase bad fats called triglycerides in the blood. Simple carbohydrates are generally those that break down
fast and do not provide much value beyond the initial energy burst. Although some simple carbs, such as fructose and lactose, can be beneficial and are generally found in healthy foods, it’s best to avoid simple carbs. Eating healthy doesn’t mean avoiding carbohydrates and fats altogether. The key is to find good fats and carbs that provide a host of benefits. Good fats, such as monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids, help to manage mood, maintain mental acuity, fight fatigue and control weight. Good fats are largely found in olives, nuts, legumes, soy and fatty fish. Keep total fat intake to 20 to 30 percent of your calories. Good carbs are complex carbohydrates. They’re starches that take a longer time to metabolize in your digestive system. Good carbs will raise blood sugar, but they will keep it at a stable level for an extended period of time. Complex carbs usually contain a lot of fiber, which can help keep a person feeling full for long periods of time. Plus, they help keep digestion moving smoothly to help you avoid constipation. Fibrous vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans are high in fiber and are good carbohydrate choices. Some foods contain both good carbs and good fats. Eating healthy means finding a balance that includes the right fats and carbohydrates.

Exercise Tips for Beginners The right combination of diet and exercise is one of the keys to a long and healthy life. While many people find adapting to a healthier diet challenging, that challenge often pales in comparison to the intimidation felt when working out for the first time in years. Exercising after an extended period of inactivity may intimidate people who choose to workout at gyms, where fellow gym members may appear to be in tip-top shape. Overcoming that intimidation factor can be as simple as working out with a friend or working with a personal trainer, each of whom can offer the support and guidance beginners need when reacclimating themselves to more active lifestyles. In addition to the buddy system, beginners can employ the following strategies to make their return to exercise go as smoothly as possible. Gradually build up your exercise tolerance. When you exercise, your body releases neurotransmitters known as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body. Those positive feelings can be addictive, but it’s important that beginners do not go too hard too quickly when beginning a new exercise regimen. Gradually build up your exercise tolerance, exercising two or three days per week and taking a day off between workouts when you start. As your body becomes more acclimated to exercise, you can start to workout more and with more intensity.
membership upon resolving to adopt a more active lifestyle. While gyms afford you the opportunity to strength train and get in your cardiovascular exercise, they’re not for everyone. The best approach and the one that’s likely to be most successful over the long haul is to find an exercise routine that engages you and that you find enjoyable. If the gym is not for you, try to find a routine that still includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise. Strength training can make your body more durable, and cardiovascular exercise can reduce your risk for various health problems, including heart disease. Track your progress. One way to stay motivated is to keep track of your progress. If you’re working out but not monitoring your results, you may not feel like you’re getting anywhere. Keep a workout diary, tracking both your successes and failures, so you can see what’s working and what’s not. The longer you stay committed to your workout routine, the greater the likelihood that you will be tracking more successes than failures, and those successes can provide the motivation to keep you going on those inevitable days when you want to skip workouts. Returning to exercise after an extended period of inactivity can be quite the challenge, but it’s nothing motivated men and women cannot overcome.
Stretch after working out. Stretching can improve flexibility, and that may decrease your risk of future injury. In addition, improved flexibility may improve your exercise performance by improving your range of motion and helping your muscles work more effectively. Muscles contract during a workout, and stretching after workouts can help reset those muscles to their natural position. Include both static stretching and foam rolling in your post-workout stretching routine. Find a routine that works for you. Many men and women feel they must sign up for a gym 10 | SEASONS™ MAGAZINE SPRING 2016

Tips for a Fun and Frugal Road Trip Driving vacations are popular for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is flexibility. Such excursions are not restricted by flight schedules, and travelers often feel as though they have more control over their trips when traveling by car rather than traveling by air. Road trips also can save travelers money, especially when traveling in groups of three or more, and expenses such as fuel and tolls are shared. In addition to sharing the road with a few friends and family members, road trip enthusiasts can employ several other strategies to enjoy a vacation that’s both frugal and fun: Downsize your vehicle. While prices at the pump have been more driver-friendly in recent months, road trippers who drive large sedans, trucks or SUVs might be able to save money by driving smaller vehicles during their trips. Especially small vehicles may be impractical and uncomfortable depending on the number of people who are making the trip,
but mid-size vehicles with ample storage space tend to be more fuel-efficient than large trucks or SUVs. If someone in your traveling party drives such a vehicle and it’s in good shape, take that car instead of a larger alternative. Get a tuneup. Another way to save money on your road trip is to get a vehicle tuneup in the days before your trip is set to begin. Let your mechanic know you are planning a road trip and ask that a full diagnostic test be conducted to make sure everything is running efficiently. An air filter nearing its expiration date may be worth replacing, as a new filter will help to save money on fuel. In addition, replace tires with worn tread, as old or inadequately inflated tires will force the engine to work harder, wasting fuel and costing you and your fellow travelers money along the way. Consider various types of lodging. Road trippers who plan well in advance may be able to find great deals on lodging, but too much planning may cost
travelers some of the flexibility and freedom they were hoping to enjoy during their vacations. Weather permitting, campsites can be unique and affordable places to stay. When planning your routes, choose roadways that are close to popular campsites, avoiding campsites that are too remote, as such sites may cost you in time and fuel what you’re saving on lodging. If campsites a r e unavailable, download hotel website apps on your phone and use these apps to find affordable rooms as you go. Simply showing up to hotels without reservations is unlikely to yield great rates, but apps may offer discounted rates on rooms hotels are simply looking to fill at the last minute. Bring your own food. Fuel,
lodging and food tend to be the three biggest expenses on driving vacations. Travelers who bring their own food can save a substantial amount of money and maintain some control over what they eat. That’s a big benefit for men and women who like to eat healthy and prefer to avoid the
fast food fare that tends to be the only options available at rest stops. Road trips make for great vacations, and travelers can take many steps to make such excursions more affordable without sacrificing fun.

Healthy Habits to Combat Stress Stress has an immediate and potentially long-term effect on the human body. Though it’s a natural response to both good and bad experiences, stress, when chronic, can produce a host of negative consequences that greatly diminish one’s quality of life. Combatting stress can sometimes be difficult, as the causes of stress are never too far away for
that money is the top cause of stress for Americans. The survey was conducted on behalf of the APA by Harris Poll, which asked more than 3,000 participants about their issues with stress. Sixty-four percent said money was a somewhat or very significant source of stress, and that number was even higher for parents (77 percent). Survey respondents also noted that work is a significant source of stress. Few adults can imagine a life that does not include financial- or work-related stress. But there are ways to combat stress that can benefit people’s long-term health and improve their present-day quality of life:
many adults. In its 2015 “Stress in AmericaTM: Paying With Our Health” survey, the American Psychological Association found

respond to stressful days by consuming alcohol. While alcohol helps some people forget a stressful day, it also produces psychological and physiological side effects that can compound the effects of the very stress drinkers are looking to relieve. People who drink to alleviate stress may only be doing more harm with each drink, so find a way to cope with stress that has a more positive impact on both your body and mind than that produced by alcohol.
those who had no such networks to rely on. Try to overcome any reticence you might have about speaking about your stress to a close friend or trusted relative on those days when stress seems overwhelming. Get more exercise. Routine exercise is another healthy way to combat stress. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, studies have shown that exercise can reduce fatigue, improve alertness and concentration and enhance overall cognitive function. Those are considerable benefits to people dealing with elevated levels of stress, which can contribute to both physical and mental fatigue and negatively impact one’s ability to concentrate. Studies also have shown that regular exercise can decrease tension, which tends to increase as stress levels rise, and elevate and help to stabilize mood, which often decreases as stress levels increase.
Breathe deeply. The American Institute of Stress notes that focused breathing is a relaxation response that stimulates the nervous system and promotes a sense of calmness. Deep breathing can combat stress, lower blood pressure and draw your attention away from those things that are causing your stress. Visit www. stress.org to learn about deep breathing exercises. Wash Your Car Like a Pro to Protect its Value Vehicle owners know maintaining a vehicle can be a lot of work. Taking the time to properly care for a vehicle can prolong its life expectancy and help owners avoid breakdowns and other issues along the way. Regular washing is an aspect of vehicle maintenance that some may classify as a purely cosmetic benefit. Certainly, a car wash can keep the vehicle looking its best, but there are other advantages to washing as well. Washing offers preventative maintenance for the car’s paint and can help prevent rust and corrosion resulting from dirt, acid rain and road salt. Rust can compromise hydraulic brake and fuel lines, as well as many moving parts in the chassis and frame. Corrosion of electrical connectors and other parts under the hood can lead to leaks, electrical shorts and a host of additional problems. It’s easy to see how washing the car is more essential than one might have suspected. If you live in an area with a
high amount of dust or industry, you may need to wash your car as frequently as once a week. Drivers who live along or near coastal areas may need to wash their vehicles frequently to combat sea salt buildup. Garagekept vehicles may be able to go longer between washes, but, in general, washing a vehicle every two to three weeks is a good rule of thumb. In addition, a good sealant will protect the paint and other trims throughout the year. The following are some other carwash tips to follow: • Always use a proper washing soap solution. This will preserve the car’s finish better than other homemade soaps. Avoid using dishwashing liquid, which can strip protective wax coatings. • Be prompt when cleaning off bugs, sap and bird droppings that may stick to the paint and become difficult to remove over time. • Wait until a car has cooled down
before washing. Heat speeds up the drying of soap and water and can make it more difficult to clean. • Always use a clean, non-abrasive sponge. Resist the urge to move the sponge in circles as you clean. Doing so can create noticeable swirl scratch marks. Instead, move the sponge lengthwise across the body panels and hood. • Keep a separate rinsing bucket to clean the sponge or washing mitt so that dirt is not mixed into the clean, sudsy water. • Consumer Reports suggests using a soft squeegee to remove most of the water on the body of the car after washing and rinsing. Blot up any extra water with a chamois.
maximum protection. In between, apply a liquid spray wax to touch up spots. Water beading is not an ideal indicator of whether or not the car needs a coat of wax. • Don’t forget to pay attention to the interior. Vacuum the carpets regularly to prevent groundin dirt, and routinely clean the upholstery with a product specific to your vehicle’s interior, whether that interior is leather or fabric. Protecting a vehicle investment involves keeping the car clean. Know the right ways to help a car or truck look and perform like new.
• Wax the car every season to ensure it has

Great Gift Ideas for Dad Father’s Day is right around the corner, and that means many children, spouses and other family members will be scrambling to locate the perfect gifts for the men in their lives. If you think carefully about gift ideas, there’s bound to be something that will be a perfect fit: Sports: If Dad follows a particular team or sport, gifts inspired by his love of a favorite team are a surefire bet for success. Team jersies, game memorabilia, tickets to the next at-home game, or an expanded satellite dish or cable TV sports programming package are some gift ideas that will coordinate with a sports theme. Some dads also may be content to simply hit the links or spend a few hours at the batting cages. Personalized Gifts: Personalized gifts can show that special man in your life that you care about him in a special way. Instead of a run-of-the-mill item pulled off a store shelf, a personalized gift can feature a name, date or sentiment right on the gift itself. Think about giving Dad a personalized plaque that designates his work area in the garage or a pocket lighter or photo frame engraved with a special message or his name. An embroidered bath robe, or a golf bag embroidered with his initials may also be a special treat. Fit for Foodies: As the adage goes, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Take
MEDICAL SUPPLIES, INC.
advantage of these words of wisdom by gifting your Dad with food or culinary-themed items. Dad may be an amateur chef and will enjoy a cookbook by his favorite Food NetworkTM personality. Or he may have a restaurant he insists on going to all the time, so guaranteeing a gift card to said restaurant will be a hit. If Dad appreciates not only the taste, but also the culture of food, plan a tour of food shops in the area or go on a wine- and cheese-tasting adventure. Gear Heads: Some dads get revved up about automotive gifts, especially if they spend the weekends pampering their prized cars or trucks. If he tends to have a wrench in hand and head under the hood, treat your father to some new supplies for his automotive pursuits. Quality car waxes and upholstery cleaners are always in demand. Or give him a gift certificate to his favorite hand-wash, auto-detailing center. Gas station gift cards or a new ratchet set are other good auto gift ideas. Techies: Some dads get excited about the latest tablets or smartphones. They may keep abreast of virus-detection software or think the technological gadgets sold in those speciality magazines and mall stores are must-haves. Chances are, if you spend enough time with Dad, you know just what he likes to dabble in, and you can get him an electronic device he’ll find invaluable.

Blue Cheese Dip 2 cups bleu cheese crumbles, divided 1 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 teaspoons hot sauce 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 cup finely chopped scallions 1/4 cup finely chopped celery Marinade 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup hot sauce 4 tablespoons Virgil’s Dry Rub 4 tablespoons granulated garlic 4 tablespoons granulated onion Juice of 1/2 lemon Wings 8 large chicken wings 1/2 cup Virgil’s Dry Rub (see below) Sauce 10 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 teaspoon cornstarch 4 tablespoons white vinegar 3/4 cup hot sauce 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
DIRECTIONS 1. To make the dip, combine 1 cup of the blue cheese, mayonnaise, buttermilk, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and salt in the bowl of a food processor and blend on low until smooth. 2. Remove to a medium mixing bowl and fold in the rest of the blue cheese, scallions and celery, being sure to break up the larger bleu cheese crumbles. Place in a covered container and refrigerate overnight. 3. Mix all the marinade ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Place the wings in a large container with a lid and pour the EDITION ONE
mixture over the wings. Toss until the wings are thoroughly coated. Cover and refrigerate for 2 days. 4. Preheat the grill or smoker to 245º F. 5. Spread out the wings on a sheet pan and wipe away any excess marinade. Sprinkle liberally with the dry rub, coating the wings all over. 6. Position the wings on the grill away from the direct heat of the coals or burners, and add hickory to the smoker or hickory chips on the coals or gas burners. 7. Cook the wings for about 3 hours, flipping every 30 minutes (their internal temperature should be about 165º F when cooked). 8. While the wings are cooking, cut the butter for the sauce into 1-inch cubes and refrigerate. Whisk the cornstarch into the white vinegar, in a small bowl. 9. In a medium sauté pan over medium heat, bring the hot sauce to a simmer and whisk in the thickened vinegar. Return to a simmer, cook for 1 minute, and remove from the heat. 10. Add the cayenne and slowly whisk in the cold butter. Keep warm until serving. 11. Remove the wings from the smoker or grill and put half of them into a bowl, cover with the sauce and toss. Repeat with the remaining wings and serve on a platter, with the bleu cheese dip on the side.
Virgil’s Dry Rub Makes 5 to 51/2 cups 21/2 cups sweet paprika 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup Texas-style chili powder 1/2 cup minced onion 1/2 cup granulated garlic 1/4 cup dried parsley flakes 6 tablespoons kosher salt Combine all of the ingredients in a medium bowl and whisk together until completely incorporated. Transfer to a covered bowl with a tight-fitting lid. Store in a cool, dry place. www.seasonsmagazineonline.com
How Dogs Benefit from Daily Walks Dog owners with fenced-in backyards may think their furry friends are getting all they need during their nightly exercise sessions in the backyard. While such yards provide safe places for dogs to relax and run around, the American Humane Association (www.americanhumane.org) notes that even dogs who run wild in their backyards each day can benefit from daily walks. The following are a handful of ways dogs benefit from daily walks. Socialization: The Animal Humane Society (www. animalhumanesociety.org) notes that puppies between three weeks and 20 weeks old are generally accepting of other dogs, and nightly walks can provide the perfect opportunity for puppy owners to acquaint their furry friends with their fellow dogs. Continued exposure after 20 weeks can help further the socialization process for young dogs. Behavior: While puppies can learn to socialize on daily walks,
older dogs may or may not reap the same rewards. But daily walks can help dog owners instill better behavior in their dogs. The AHS advises that owners of older dogs use walks as opportunities to teach dogs to behave calmly in public. Bring treats to reward dogs for sitting quietly when encountering other dogs and new people along the walk.
dogs lose and/or maintain healthy weights, and the AHA notes that such walks also help dogs build strength and endurance. Stimulation: According to the American Kennel Club (www.akc. org), dogs need both physical and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. Walks obviously provide physical stimulation, but they can stimulate dogs mentally
as well. Dogs often interrupt walks when their curiosity gets the better of them, stopping to observe or investigate something while on walks, and that’s mentally stimulating. Resist the temptation to pull the leash when dogs want to stop to check something out, affording them a little time to do some mental exploration before continuing the walk.
Exercise: Of course, daily walks provide great exercise for dogs. Dogs who are let out in the backyard each night but are not played with may not be getting the exercise their owners think they are. Dogs left alone in a backyard may briefly run around before plopping down in the grass and enjoying the fresh air. That’s not enough exercise for many breeds, and it’s certainly insufficient for dogs who may be overweight or obese. Nightly walks can help

Tips for a Memorable Memorial Day BBQ To many Americans, Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer. Though summer does not actually begin until later in June, Memorial Day weekend has become synonymous with backyard barbecues and trips to the beach.
Backyard barbecues, in particular, have become a staple of Memorial Day weekend and the focus of many people’s festivities. This year, consider the following tips to make your Memorial Day barbecue safe and memorable: Place the grill in a safe spot. Before any guests arrive or any fires are lit, make sure the grill is safely located on flat ground. Ideally, the grill should not be on the grass and should be away from trees or shrubs and any other flammable materials. If you need lighter fluid to start a fire, promptly put the fluid back in storage, away from the grill, once the fire has been lit. Clean the grill. Memorial Day marks the opening of grilling season for many grillmasters. Make sure the grill has been thoroughly cleaned and that there are no leftover ashes from last season clogging the vents. Even if you thoroughly cleaned the grill at the end of last season, give it a once-over with a soapy sponge at the start of the season to clean
STATE
any cobwebs, or dirt and grime that might have accumulated over the winter. Stock up on charcoal. Falling short in the charcoal department is a backyard barbecue faux pas that can bring the festivities to a halt. Because the weather in late May can sometimes be unpredictable, make sure you have extra charcoal on hand should strong winds or colder temperatures make it difficult to build a strong fire. Spice things up. Why not use this year’s Memorial Day barbecue to add a little extra flavor to traditional barbecue fare? Soak some dried herbs like rosemary, bay leaves or oregano in water and add them to the grill. These flavorful herbs will make the food taste better, and the grill will likely emit a more pleasant fragrance as well. Prepare foods for guests with varying palates. Vegetarians and vegans love a good backyard barbecue just as much as their
carnivorous friends and family members. Cook some vegetable kabobs and prepare some salads for guests who don’t eat meat. Consider purchasing a smaller grill for veggies only, as vegetarians and vegans might not prefer to eat kabobs grilled on the same grill as meat. Keep the forks in the utensil drawer. Never use a fork to do a spatula’s job. Poking foods on the grill with a fork allows the juices that make grilled foods so delicious to escape, resulting in drier fare that’s not nearly as flavorful. Use a spatula or tongs to flip foods, including burgers, steaks, chicken and even hot dogs. Make sure foods have completely defrosted before placing them on the grill. When cold meat is placed on the grill, it reduces the grill’s temperature and prevents juices from getting seared in the food. So make sure all foods have been defrosted to ensure your foods are flavorful and the grill stays hot.

Seeing Green: How to Help Your Lawn Bounce Back from Winter Lawns are exposed to the elements throughout the year, and each season brings its own unique set of challenges. Summer heat waves can make it hard for lawns to maintain their lush green appeal, while the falling leaves of autumn can threaten root systems if not handled properly. Winter frost and snow also can pose a threat to lawns, leaving homeowners with some work to do when spring arrives. Spring is a season of revival, and that spirit of rejuvenation extends to lawns. When the last vestiges of winter begin to disappear, homeowners can dust off their gardening gloves and start taking steps to revitalize their lawns for the months ahead. Look for signs of damage. Winter can be hard on lawns, so it’s important for homeowners to look for signs of damage before they begin planning any springtime landscaping projects.
Salt damage can occur in areas that received heavy snowfall over the winter. Many communities use rock salt to de-ice snowand ice-covered roads, and that rock salt is largely made up of sodium chloride, which can draw moisture from grass and cause it to brown. Salt trucks used during winter storms often spit salt out onto lawns, so don’t be surprised if you notice brown spots on your grass, especially in those areas closest to the road. Winter lawn damage may also be caused by voles, burrowing mouse-like rodents that make paths beneath the snow to hide from predators and feed on grass blades and roots. Lawns with distinctly matted areas may also have been damaged by snow mold that can weaken turf. Consult a professional landscaper. Homeowners with considerable experience tending to damaged lawns can no doubt identify and address problems
on their own. That’s because many problems are a result of the weather, which tends to be similar and produce similar problems from one year to the next. But inexperienced homeowners should consult professional landscapers before attempting to address problems on their own. Winter lawn damage may be caused by a variety of factors that can produce similar symptoms, and professional landscapers can identify the culprits behind such damage and provide the most effective solutions to restore the lawn. Remove debris. A light raking can help remove any debris that accumulated over the winter. Such debris, which may include fallen branches and fallen leaves left behind from the final days of fall, can prevent lawns from getting the sun and water they need to thrive. Remove this debris, but make sure the grass is not frozen when you do, as
walking on frozen grass can cause further damage. Let the grass grow. Mowing the lawn is a chore that’s reserved for spring, summer and maybe early fall, but it’s important that homeowners don’t jump the gun and mow too early after winter. A patient approach allows the grass to reestablish itself, so let it grow a little higher than you normally would before the first cut. When the grass is roughly 4.5 inches high, you can cut it down to three inches and then maintain your normal mowing routine throughout the rest of spring and summer. Revitalizing lawns in springtime is a priority for many homeowners, who should always consult landscaping professionals if they feel uncertain about addressing any damage they discover during their post-winter lawn inspections.

How to Make Spring Projects More Eco-Friendly Home improvement season provides a great opportunity to make homes more ecofriendly. When planning home improvement projects, it’s best to first choose a project and then look for ways to make the project more environmentally friendly. Such an approach may not only benefit the environment, but it also may benefit homeowners’ bottom lines. Interior Decorating: Longer days and warmer temperatures often translate into wanting to freshen up the interior of a home. Heavy draperies and comforters are put away, and lighter fabrics are taken out of storage. Whenever possible, reuse or repurpose items you already have rather than purchasing new items. Longer drapes can be cut and hemmed to be used as window treatments in other rooms. Making a patchwork blanket out of old T-shirts is a crafty project that makes use of items that would otherwise be destined for landfills. When laundering linens, skip the energy-using dryer and let items
line dry in the sun and fresh air. If you decide to purchase some new items, look for products made from sustainable or organic fabrics. Hemp and bamboo textiles have grown in popularity. Hemp and bamboo plants grow quickly, and their durability makes these materials smart choices. When replacing items around the house, donate older items to a charitable organization. Flowers and Plants: Spring and summer call to mind beautiful blooming plants. Relying on native, sustainable plants is practical, environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Native plants sustain local wildlife more effectively than non-native alternatives, so include native plants in your sustainable garden. Native plants also are less reliant on pesticides and herbicides to keep them healthy and viable. Don’t forget to bring plants indoors as well. Even though you may be opening the windows more,

Efficient air cleaning is accomplished with at least one plant per 100 square feet of home or office space.
products. Area recycling centers may have drop-off areas for stains and paints, used motor oil and other potentially harmful products.
Proper Disposal: Spring cleaning is another tradition for many families come the end of winter and dawn of spring. Many people use spring as a time to go through closets and garages to remove items they no longer use or need. In an effort to clean up fast, some people may dispose of chemical products, paints, treated lumber and many other items in ways that can be damaging to the e n v i ro n m e n t . Always learn local municipal guidelines for proper disposal of potentially h a r m f u l
Exercise caution outdoors as well. Runoff from cleaning products used on home siding or driveways can leach into the surrounding soil or find its way into sewage drains that ultimately direct fluids to public waterways. Choose environmentally responsible products whenever possible.
Before discarding something, see if it can be donated or sold. This will result in fewer items ending up in landfills.

Rack of Lamb
with Coffee & Avocado Honey Crust Leg of lamb is a popular dish at family outings. Whether it’s a holiday meal, anniversary dinner or a double date at home with friends, lamb can set the tone for a memorable night. Hosts who want to experiment with a less traditional take on lamb can try the following recipe for “Rack of Lamb With a Coffee and Avocado Honey Crust”:
Serves 4 INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup toasted fresh bread crumbs 1/4 cup honey, preferably avocado honey 1/4 cup coarse-ground mustard 1 small rack of lamb (about 2 pounds) Sea salt Coarsely ground black pepper Granulated garlic 1 cup strong brewed coffee or espresso 1/4 cup white wine
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 375º F. 2. Make a paste of the bread crumbs, honey and mustard in a small bowl, mixing until just combined. 3. Season the lamb rack with salt, pepper and granulated garlic. Spread the honey-mustard paste on the meat side of the rack. Place the lamb rack in a baking dish just large enough to hold it,
preferably one that can also be placed directly on the stove top. Pour the coffee into the bottom of the baking dish. 4. Bake for 10 minutes, or until the crust is set, then baste with the pan drippings, trying not to dissolve the honey-mustard mixture. Continue to bake until a meat thermometer reads 130º F, 20 minutes or longer. Keep a careful watch. If your racks are small, this may take less time. Similarly, larger racks will take longer. When the proper temperature is reached, remove from the oven. Transfer the lamb rack to a warmed plate to rest while you prepare the sauce. 5. Place the baking dish on the stove. Simmer the drippings over the medium-high heat and add the wine to deglaze the pan, stirring with a wooden spoon. Add any additional juices that might have collected on the plate from the resting lamb. Stir until the drippings and wine are well mixed and slightly thick, about 5 minutes. 6. Cut the rack into rib portions and serve with the warmed sauce. Note: To make fresh crumbs, simply cut a few slices of bread into tiny pieces or pulse a few slices in a food processor for a few seconds. You are looking for coarse crumbs, not grains of sand. To toast, toss in a dry saucepan over medium heat for a few minutes, until the bread dries and turns golden brown.
