Embrace An Active Outdoor Lifestyle Blue skies and warm weather entice people to enjoy the great outdoors. For many people, few things are more enjoyable than soaking up some rays and breathing in some fresh air. Moderate temperatures help make many outdoor activities that much more enjoyable. But even if the weather isn’t perfect, individuals can make the best of the situation and still get out of the house. As the seasons of warm weather return, those itching to get outside can explore these entertaining outdoor activities.

Hiking Thousands of miles of hiking trails crisscross North America. These trails include rough and rugged paths blazed across natural areas and long-distance trails that stretch over portions of the country. From the Appalachian Trail in the East to the Bigfoot Trail in the west, hikers and nature enthusiasts have plenty of trails to tread. Hiking is a great outdoor activity in part because it can be enjoyed

by people of any age and just about any fitness level. Hikers can work up from relatively short and flat trails to more intense vertical and varied hikes. Local parks, government preserves and rural areas offer plenty of places to walk and hike.

riding should visit a stable or riding academy nearby. You likely do not need to own a horse of your own, as riding schools and stables will have animals you can work with.

Biking Biking is another outdoor activity ideal for people of all ages and athletic abilities. Once you’ve learned to ride a bicycle, that ability stays with you, whether you ride a bike each day or haven’t taken one for a spin in years.

When hiking, it’s best to go in pairs. In the event anything occurs, such as an injury, the other hiker will be able to go for help. Hikers also should alert people at home as to their itineraries. Leave a map and plot out where you will be, especially if hikes take you off the beaten path. Remember to pack a portable snack and plenty of water. And when out in the sun, apply sunscreen and reapply as needed.

Horseback Riding Nature takes on an entirely different look when you are atop a horse. Horseback riding isn’t just for country folk or cowboys, and it can be a great workout as well as a recreational retreat. It takes balance, strong legs and quick reflexes to stay in a saddle. Those interested in horseback

horse and have him or her get to know you. Approach the horse from the front left side. Horses are prey animals and can be skittish by nature, so a firm, calm greeting can reassure the animal.

Remember to wear the right clothing, including long pants and boots, for riding. A hat can shade you from the overhead sun, while a helmet is adviseable for people new to the sport or those who want added protection. Always arrive early so that you can familiarize yourself with your

Many towns and cities across the country have become much more bike-friendly in recent years, clearing space for biking paths and lanes even in the busiest metropolitan areas. And mountain bikers still have plenty of trails to traverse as well. Check that your bike is in good working order and that the chain is freshly oiled. Take your bike to a local cycling shop for a tuneup if necessary. Verify the fit of helmets, especially on children who may have grown since the most recent cycling season.

Improve Your Golf Game Warmer weather sends scores of golfers to their favorite courses each and every day. Golf is a challenging pastime, but a few pointers can help golfers hone their short games, long games and everything in between.

Fix your alignment. Align your shots by assessing the target from behind the ball. Then set the clubface behind the golf ball and align it with the target before you enter your stance.

Choose the right clubs. There is more to selecting clubs than pulling any old iron out of your golf bag and whacking away. Wind, hazards and obstructions in landing areas should influence your decision of which club to use. Novice golfers may want to rely on their caddies to make club recommendations, and as they become more confident in their abilities, they can start to make their own choices.

Use your torso for power. The torso is essential to a solid swing. Practice rotating from your core to control your backswing and then maintain the same spine angle and posture on the downswing.

Anchor your feet. Anchor your foot behind the ball to drive the ball further. Right-handed players will keep the right foot anchored, and lefties will do the opposite. Do not lift your foot prematurely; otherwise, you can lose power and distance. Identify your weaknesses. As with any hobby, identifying those areas that need the most work can help you become a better golfer. Keep track of each shot you take, and then look at the results to see which areas of your game need the most work.

Use the wind. Not every golf game will be played in perfect weather. A good player knows how to make adjustments for the wind depending on the shot. Use the wind to your advantage when you can, and adjust your swing when hitting into the wind. Become a better chipper. Many players put so much emphasis on their backswings and putt shots that they fail to devote any practice to chips. All shots are important for golfers trying to shed strokes off of their scores. Keep fit. Maintaining or improving your physical strength and overall health can help your golf game. Exercise and eat right, and you will have more endurance on the links.

Summer Camp Options Summer camp is a beloved tradition in many families. Many parents of young children fondly recall spending their summers at summer camp, where they made lifelong friends and learned the finer points of roasting marshmallows and competing in three-legged sack races. The following are some of the summer camp options parents can expect to encounter as they search for the right camper for their kids:

Day camps are not overnight camps, which means kids will return home each night rather than sleep over at camp. Day camps typically offer many of the activities people have come to associate with camps, including crafts, sports and even day-trips to experience local culture or attractions. Many day camps are co-ed, and counselors typically live within the community.

Faith-Based Camps Faith-based camps offer many of the same activities as more traditional summer camps, but do so while simultaneously offering campers the opportunity to celebrate and further explore their religious beliefs. Some faith-based camps may focus heavily on religion, incorporating faith into daily camp activities, while others may be more subtle.

Sports Camps Some summer camps focus on a particular sport, catering to young athletes who want to further develop their athletic talents. Sports camps may feature guest lectures and lessons from notable local athletes and coaches, while some camps may provide instruction from current and/or former professional athletes. Some sports camps are overnight, while others are day camps.

Family Camps Family camps are opportunities for the whole family to enjoy the summer camp experience. Family camps typically tailor their activities around tasks families can complete together, with counselors providing assistance when it’s needed. Family camps may be faith-based or secular, and families typically stay overnight, sleeping in facilities on the campsites or in lodging away from home.

Special Needs Camps Parents of children with special needs can still send their kids to summer camp, as there are many camps that cater to such youngsters. Special needs camps may cater to campers who are blind, deaf, learning disabled or mentally or physically disabled. Staff at special needs camps typically undergoes extensive training, which helps to calm some of the fears parents may have.

Play It Safe On Your Prom Night

Call Now For Information On Our Ne Wedding Showcase! xt

Do not carry large sums of money with you to prom. It’s best to avoid taking a lot of cash to prom, as young ladies can’t keep watchful eyes on their handbags as they cut a rug, and young men might leave their wallets in their unattended sports coats. Do not take offerings of drinks from unsealed containers, even if they look innocuous. Teens should be wary of accepting drinks offered in unsealed containers, especially if those drinks are offered by strangers. If a drink tastes funny, stop drinking it and report it to a faculty member or chaperone.

Prom is a memorable and enjoyable event for high school students. A chance for teenagers to insert some glamour into their lives, prom also provides an opportunity to make lasting memories with friends before high school ends.

Don’t feel pressured to drink alcohol or do drugs. The majority of promgoers want to have clean fun as they listen and dance to music and share laughs with their friends, so students should not feel pressured to engage in risky behavior involving drugs and alcohol. If someone is pressuring you and/or your friends, walk away and encourage your friends to do the same.

While prom should be fun, that revelry should not come at the expense of safety. Prom night is most enjoyable when it is safe and memorable for all the right reasons, and teens and parents can take the following steps to ensure prom night goes safely:

Be aware of your surroundings at night, especially when you leave the prom. Ask the limousine driver to pick you up in a well-lit area of the parking lot so you are not vulnerable to people with ill intentions.

If pressure arises, call a parent to come pick you up immediately.

Veggie Garden Tips For Beginners Planting a vegetable garden can be a worthwhile endeavor for anyone who has an available patch of land. Gardens need not take up much space, and even apartment dwellers without yards can plant small gardens in containers they place on terraces or window boxes. Although establishing a garden is easy enough, beginners may make a few mistakes along the way. Those who already have paved the garden way before can offer novice gardeners some worthwhile tips. One of the first decisions novice gardeners must make is which crops to grow. This will help determine how much land you will need and which supplies or soil amendments will be necessary. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, a common error for beginners is planting too much and more than anyone could ever consume, so it’s best to start small and be proud of that small garden. Plants such as peppers, squash and tomatoes produce throughout the season, so you may not need many plants to provide for your needs. Less prolific plants may require a greater investment to produce a similar yield.

Locate your garden in an area that gets adequate sun. Many vegetables need between six and eight hours of sunlight per day. Without enough light, they will not bear as much and could be susceptible to insect infestation. Vegetables and fruit also need plenty of water because they’re not very drought-tolerant, so keep gardens close to a water source. Another good tip is to locate the garden near the house or barbecue grill. This way you can easily harvest fresh produce and use it when cooking. Soil preparation is also key. Till the soil and remove debris like rocks, sticks and hard clumps of dirt. Work with organic material, such as manure or compost. Apply mulch after planting to help maintain moisture levels in the soil. Plant the tallest crops at the rear of your garden bed. Work forward with shorter crops. Try to leave a foot or more between planting rows. It’s easy to get a garden started and enjoy fresh food for many months to come.

HUNTINGTON LIMOUSINE SERVICE Make Us Your Designated Driver

Transportation Tips: Getting To And From Your Wedding Transportation can be easily overlooked when couples plan their weddings. Couples may recognize they may have to hire a car or limousine to get them to their ceremonies and then their receptions, but what happens when the limousine calls it a night? While some couples immediately depart for their honeymoons after saying goodbye to their wedding guests, many build a day in between the wedding and honeymoon, giving them a chance to rest, take stock of their wedding gifts and finish packing. That leaves the question of how a couple will return home from the reception or get to the airport. The best man may offer to drive the bride and groom where they need to go. But if the best man is from out of town, he may not have a chariot awaiting to escort the newly christened husband and wife to the airport. As a result, all members of the wedding party should discuss their post-wedding travel plans in advance. Any person who will be arriving in a hired car will need to make arrangements to have their own vehicle available at the end of the wedding or be able to call a taxi or car service to get a safe ride home. Some wedding party members may decide to park a car at the reception site or a hotel the day prior to the wedding so they will have a return ride. It’s also a good idea to ask friends or family members who are not in the bridal party for a ride home. Even if wedding party members have a car available, no one should drive when intoxicated. Couples may want to include the phone number of a local taxi service in their hotel gift bags just to be safe. For more information, call: 631.226.2636

The Benefits Of Buying Local When Gifting

Healthy Alternatives

celebrating wellness & healthy alternatives For Over 17 Years. OPEN 7 DAYS

The average adult must shop for gifts for friends or family members several times over the course of a typical year. Birthdays, holidays and anniversaries are often the driving force behind such excursions, but some people will buy a gift for a loved one even if there is no special occasion attached. When buying gifts for those we love, many consumers hope to find something unique. But unique items can be hard to find at the local shopping mall, where national chain stores tend to dominate. That reality highlights just one of the many benefits of shopping locally. Local merchants tend to have more unique merchandise. A national chain store on one side of the country is not much different from its counterpart on the opposite coast. The stores’ layouts are likely identical and so is their inventory. Unlike such corporate giants, local merchants aren’t mass-producing their items, and chances are the items sold by local merchants are one-of-a-kind. Such items make for more unique gifts that recipients might find more thoughtful than an item they can find at larger chain stores.

Local merchants often provide more satisfying customer service. Larger chains tend to rely on automated systems to handle many of their customer service calls. Some consumers may never even speak to a real person when they call a customer service line, while others may first have to answer several automated questions before finally being connected to a real person. Local merchants tend to handle their own customer service, and consumers who have a concern or question about a product often speak directly with the store’s owner. That sense of direct connection gives consumers some peace of mind and can make them more comfortable when making their purchases.

HOME FURNISHING & DESIGN STUDIO

Local merchants tend to be more knowledgeable about their products. Large chain stores might have many employees working on the floor or behind the registers, but those employees are not always experts on the products being sold throughout the store. Local merchants tend to have less inventory and fewer employees who often know a great deal about the products on the shelves. Some employees might even have developed the products being sold, and that knowledge can be put to use when uncertain shoppers are looking for the perfect gift for their loved ones.

Local merchants are more accessible. Arguably the biggest benefit of shopping locally for gifts is the proximity to home. Consumers who buy products from merchants within their community won’t have to travel far to do their shopping, nor will they need to gas up the car if the item needs to be returned or exchanged. Some local merchants may even be within walking distance of home, making a shopping trip even more accessible. www.seasonsmagazineonline.com

Choosing The Perfect Color Painting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a space. The colors homeowners choose for their walls can give rooms their own unique feel and even affect the moods of the people within them. Finding the right shade for a bedroom or kitchen involves more than just selecting the first color that catches your eye. Design experts and psychologists alike say it may be worthwhile to choose a color that helps you feel good rather than just following design trends. The paint color you pick may add energy to a space or create a tranquil retreat where you can unwind at the end of the day.

Blue To create a spa-like environment and a more serene space, look to shades of blue in soft variations. Cool blues are soothing colors that can help lower stress levels and promote sleep. That’s why blue is a frequent fixture in bedrooms and bathrooms. Just be advised that too much blue can make a room appear cold and stark, so balance out blue with some warmer accents.

Orange Many people do not immediately consider bright orange for their homes, but when

used as an accent shade, orange can really brighten up a home. Orange is considered a shade that expands creativity and imparts a youthful appeal to a space. Consider an orange accent wall or a burst of color with orange throw pillows. If pumpkin orange is a little too bold for you, tone it down by choosing a more pastel, peachy hue, which is equally warm and energizing.

Red Red stimulates energy and appetite, which is why the shade is so popular in restaurants and home dining spaces. Red is a good choice for social gathering rooms, but may not be the wisest choice for a bedroom, as the color may prove overstimulating.

Green Green can evoke composure and tranquility and works in any room of the house. Since green is the primary color of nature, it also works well for those people who want to bring some of the outdoors inside and work with the fresh starts and new growth that green can inspire. To make green feel less subdued and

sleepy, work with its complementary opposite, red, by using a few bold red accents here and there to balance out the tranquility of green.

Purple People have long related purple to royalty, and this dramatic color can add a formal, regal aspect to a home depending on the hue. Purple also may help stimulate the creative side of the brain. In paler shades of lavender, purple can seem almost ethereal and spiritual. Some designers suggest avoiding purple in a bedroom because that is a place you want your brain to rest rather than be stimulated.

Yellow Few colors are more vibrant than yellow, which can help stimulate conversation and make thoughts more focused. A luminous shade of yellow is an ideal way to make any space more welcoming and bright. Just use it sparingly, as too much yellow may not be a good thing. Yellow accents mixed with touches of purple can offer the balance needed to prevent yellow rooms from overwhelming residents and guests.

Snacks That Promote Better Sleep Made in the USA. Est. 1979

According to the National Sleep Foundation, changes in sleep patterns are a part of the aging process. Many people experience difficulty falling asleep and then staying asleep as they age, and that difficulty can make men and women over 50 feel more tired during the day.

But even though difficulty sleeping may be a part of aging, that does not mean men and women over 50 cannot take steps to improve their sleeping patterns. For example, certain snack foods may help to improve quality of sleep, especially when these foods replace less healthy snacking options. While men and women over 50 should always consult with their physicians before making any changes to their diets, the AARP notes that the following are a handful of snack foods that promote better sleep. Almonds: Magnesium is a mineral with muscle-relaxing properties, and almonds contain enough magnesium to help men and women get a better night’s sleep. A small amount of almonds before bed might be enough to make falling and staying asleep easier. Bananas: Much like almonds, bananas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanksgiving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal, it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep.

Cheese and Crackers: One more traditional snack may just help you get a better night’s sleep. Cheese and crackers contain tryptophan and carbohydrates, which can induce a better night’s sleep and help you fall asleep sooner. Cherries: Cherries contain the sleep hormone melatonin, and the AARP notes that recent studies indicated that participants who drank tart cherry juice on a daily basis fell asleep more quickly and slept longer and better than participants who did not. Hummus: The primary ingredient in hummus is chickpeas, which are loaded with tryptophan, folate and vitamin B6. Folate has proven especially beneficial to older men and women who need help regulating their sleep patterns, while vitamin B6 helps the body regulate its clock. Peanut Butter: Peanut butter is another snacking item loaded with tryptophan. Spread some peanut butter on a carbohydrate, whether it’s a slice of toast or some crackers, before going to bed, and you may enjoy a better, longer sleep. Walnuts: Like cherries, walnuts contain melatonin, which can contribute to a longer, more restful night’s sleep. Walnuts also can help regulate stress, which is a leading cause of sleeping difficulty. Many men and women experience difficulty sleeping as they age. But the right foods may just help combat such problems and help men and women get a more adequate night’s sleep.

How To Honor Servicemen & Women This Memorial Day Men and women serving in the military make considerable sacrifices in defense of the United States and its citizens. Such sacrifices can easily be taken for granted by those with no friends or family members serving in the military, but it’s important for all Americans to recognize the efforts of both active and veteran servicemen and women. Honoring active military members and veterans does not have to be an elaborate undertaking. Service members and their families often cherish even the simplest of gestures, and the following are a handful of ways grateful men and women can show their appreciation to active and retired members of the military. Help a neighbor who’s on active duty. Active duty service members can be away from their families for long periods of time, and their absence can make things difficult for their families. Spouses of deployed service

members are typically left to manage a household on their own for months at a time. Neighbors can show their appreciation by helping with some chores around the house. Offer to mow a neighbor’s lawn or drive a neighbor’s kids to school. Such gestures might seem small, but they can go a long way toward alleviating some of the stress that spouses of deployed service members deal with on a daily basis. Support the Wounded Warrior Project. Many service members sustain physical injuries while deployed. The Wounded Warrior Project works to raise awareness and enlist the public’s help to address the needs of injured service members. Men and women who want to show their appreciation to injured service members can work with the Wounded Warrior Project by volunteering at project-sponsored events or hosting fundraising events such as golf tournaments

or community picnics. More information about working with the Wounded Warrior Project is available at www. woundedwarriorproject.org. Write a letter of appreciation. One of the simplest ways to show your support for service members is to write them a letter expressing that appreciation. If friends, relatives or neighbors are active service members or veterans, sit down and write a letter telling them how much you appreciate their sacrifice in service of their country, and encourage youngsters to do the same. If you don’t know any members of the military, you can work with A Million Thanks (www.amillionthanks.org), a yearround campaign that encourages Americans to write letters or emails or send cards or prayers to U.S. military personnel, past and

present, to thank them for their sacrifices, dedication and service. Exercise your right to vote. One of the best ways to honor servicemen and women is to avoid taking the rights they so bravely defend for granted. Members of the military routinely put their lives on the line so Americans can enjoy freedoms that many people across the globe cannot. Voting is one such freedom, so Americans should make it a point to vote every Election Day and teach their kids about the responsibility each American has to vote and take an interest in their government. Speak with active and veteran members of the military about their thoughts on proposed legislation and their opinions on how to improve that legislation, taking those opinions into consideration before casting your vote.

sights of your hometown the way a tourist might. Plan a few days when you can act like someone visiting your town or city for the first time. Go to the top of that tallest mountain or get a tour of that local factory. Seek out and visit monuments and points of history in your community. Hop on one of those sightseeing buses and learn something new about where you live. You may just be surprised at what you can discover. Look for hidden gems. Some local businesses may be willing to open up for “behind the scenes” tours if you ask. This can be a fun excursion for young children. Ask employees of a movie theater if you can see the projection room. Newspaper offices may host tours of their facilities. Even a bowling alley can be fascinating to kids if they can see ball-return mechanisms or how equipment is stored. Watching the zamboni machine clean the ice at a rink also may be an entertaining sneak peak into rink operations. Splurge on a show or sporting event. Attend an event you normally wouldn’t unless you were on vacation. Take a trip to see a Broadway or Broadway-inspired musical at a nearby theater or take the family to see your local sports team play a home game against its biggest rival. Treat yourself to concession stand snacks and a few souvenirs. Dine out a few nights. Vacations often entail eating out, especially if meals are not included in a traditional vacation package. Use your staycation as the opportunity to dine at local restaurants you have yet to visit. Indulge the kids one night and put them in charge of choosing the meals. Forget those diet plans for a day or two and savor that triple-scoop ice cream cone. If the cost of dining out has you concerned, select restaurants that offer coupons in community mailers or value packs. Read the newspaper or community bulletin. Chances are you can find a number of entertaining and low-cost activities sponsored by your town or other organizations close to home. Fireworks displays, movies under the stars, boat tours and fairs are just a handful of the fun events that may be coming soon. Turn off electronics. Take a break from some of your devices during your staycation. By doing so, you will be less likely to fall into your daily habits and more likely to make the most of your time to rest and relax. www.seasonsmagazineonline.com

Kitchen renovations have long been a safe way to improve the functionality and value of a home. But not every kitchen project is a guaranteed winner. Homeowners may inadvertently make changes that end up sticking out like a sore thumb rather than improving the space. Take a look at these kitchen remodeling dos and don’ts to guide your next undertaking. DO consider the way your kitchen will look with the rest of the home. Keep architectural integrity in mind when designing the space. A farmhouse sink and country cabinets can look out of place in an ultra-modern home.

Do’s & Don’ts Of Kitchen Remodels

DON’T overlook the importance of a seasoned designer or architect. These pros will know the tricks to maximizing space and achieving the ideal layout of appliances and may be able to recommend local contractors and vendors. DO look beyond surface details to the structural integrity of the design. The kitchen should be functional, long-lasting and beautiful. DON’T design just for today, but look to the future as well. Unless you are willing to spend $50,000 every five years, look for styles

and materials that will last for the long haul. Older homeowners may want to make adjustments now that address potential mobility issues down the road. DO work with what you have. A complete demolition and renovation is not always necessary to achieve the desired results. Only invest in major changes if something is not working (such as having to walk across the entire kitchen to access the stove) or is unsafe. Otherwise, minor upgrades may do the trick. DON’T over-improve the space. A fully equipped commercial kitchen may be handy for a professional chef, but the average person may not need an industrial hood and indoor pizza oven. When you make excessive improvements, you may not be able to recoup as much of the money spent because your home will not be on par with the values of homes in the neighborhood. DO make sure you can afford the project. Plan for some unexpected purchases and plan out the renovation according to your budget. Skimping on materials or design because of lack of money may leave you feeling dissatisfied afterward.

Few gestures of affection create such a stir as presenting a loved one with breakfast in bed. On special occasions, treating a loved one to breakfast in bed can get their big day off on the right foot. The success of such an endeavor often boils down to following a few tips:

Add small details to make the breakfast even more special. Use heart- or flower-shaped cookie cutters to add whimsy to everything from pancakes to fruit. A hand-written card or poem is another nice touch.

The surprise of breakfast in bed is almost as important as the presentation. Make sure everyone keeps the secret and rises early enough to prepare the meal. Time the meal so that it is ready when the person of honor typically awakes.

Did You Know?

Private sellers may know that the amount of mileage on their vehicles will go a long way toward determining their asking price, but they may not know that certain mileage milestones can affect how prospective buyers view their automobiles.

Banging and clanking in the kitchen does not a relaxing morning make, so select an easily prepared dish to cut back on the noise. Storeor restaurant-bought foods can still make a nice impression if they are dressed up. Adult supervision is a must when young kids are cooking. This ensures everything goes safely and smoothly while still giving kids the chance to pitch in. Delegate some tasks to kids. A young child may be able to arrange flowers in a vase, while a slightly older child may be more adept at slicing toast or helping to flip pancakes. The breakfast should be a joint effort so that the person treated to breakfast knows everyone involved cared enough to pitch in.

Choose easy-to-eat foods. Crumbly and messy foods are not the ideal fit for breakfast in bed. No one wants to spill food onto pillows or go to bed the next evening to find a pile of crumbs beneath the sheets. Finger foods or bite-sized items that can be popped into the mouth will not make much of a mess. Crepes may be a nice alternative to messier muffins. Serve coffee or tea in a cup with a lid to help prevent spills.

For example, savvy buyers know that manufacturer warranties tend to expire after three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Another important mileage marker to consider is the 60,000-mile marker. Upon reaching 60,000 miles, many vehicles need certain upgrades, including new brakes. Sellers who wish to unload their preowned vehicle as quickly as possible may want to make these upgrades prior to selling their vehicles and showcase the service records to prospective buyers.

Can’t-Miss Grad Gifts Graduation season is a time for celebration as students prepare to face the next phase of their lives. Graduation parties will soon be in full swing, and people may find themselves attending one or more of these festive occasions. Party guests and graduation well-wishers may want to bring gifts for the guests of honor, and the following are a few ideas that newly minted grads may appreciate now or in the near future: Travel Graduates enter a time of transition between graduation and their pursuits of a career or additional schooling. The summer that follows

graduation is filled with free time for many recent grads, making it a prime time to explore the world. If you know a new grad who harbors a sense of wanderlust, put together a travelthemed present complete with airline tickets, guide books, carry-on luggage, and some converted currency to use as spending money. You even can work with a travel agent to customize a trip you know your new grad will love. Charitable Giving Philanthropic students may have spent their time as students helping others and supporting certain charities. If you are aware of a cause your graduate supports, think about making a donation to that organization. Couple that gift with an offering to volunteer. It’s a great way to spend time with the graduate before he or she moves on to the next phase of life.

Professional Wardrobe Recent graduates may have interviews lined up or even a job awaiting them upon graduation, and such grads may need attire that is more befitting the business world. Suits, ties, collared shirts, briefcases and the like will make thoughtful gifts for the budding professional. If you are unsure of sizes or style preferences, a gift card to a well-known retailer or specialty shop is a safe idea.

Automotive Accessories Many recent grads use the months immediately following graduation to take a road trip, making automotive accessories great gifts. Increase the enjoyment factor of a post-graduation road trip by treating the grad to a subscription to a streaming satellite music service. This way grads can enjoy their favorite tunes no matter where their roads lead them. Relaxation School is not easy, so a gift to a spa for a massage or facial session can be a way to help your favorite graduate unwind once final exam and term paper season has officially ended. Exercise is another way to unwind from the rigors of a school year, so consider a health club membership for new grads whose campus gym access is no longer available. Financial Favors Cash is a graduation gift that will never go out of style. It may not be fancy, but cash certainly comes in handy for graduates facing repayment of student loans or the costs of secondary schooling. If giving cash at a party, write a check payable to the graduate rather than giving loose cash that can be easily lost. Some grads even may have a Go Fund Me or Paypal account to help offset schooling costs, and gift givers can deposit money directly into such accounts if they so desire. www.seasonsmagazineonline.com

Trendy Exercises To Stay Trim & Fit Exercising consistently is a great way to get healthy. For those who find their workout routines monotonous, switching up exercises and embracing some of the newer, trendier fitness regimens may be a way to maintain your momentum at the gym.

High-Intensity Workouts High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is a concept behind some of today’s most popular exercise programs. HIIT combines cardiovascular and strength-training movements into a concentrated workout designed to keep your heart rate elevated. HIIT workouts blend bouts of intense exercise with either rest or low-intensity activity. These workouts seem to promote faster weight loss than prolonged workouts at moderate paces.

Kettlebells These weighted cast-iron workout tools can be an interesting addition to strength-training workouts. But their utility does not stop there. Using kettlebells during any physical activity will increase the amount of fat burned and can provide a full-body workout. Kettlebells come in different weights, and newcomers are urged to start out gradually and build up in weight as they become more familiar.

Trampoline Cardio For those who want to both shake up their workouts and lift their moods, jumping on a trampoline can do just that. It’s difficult to be in a bad mood when bouncing around like a kid on a trampoline. Trampoline classes are turning up in some upscale gyms, where each participant has his own individual trampoline. Routines mix in different choreography and small hand weights to promote a fun and effective cardio experience.

Water Aerobics Swimming isn’t the only thing you can do in a pool. Water workouts are ideal for those with muscle and joint pain because the buoyancy of the water reduces stress on these areas, while providing enough resistance for a deep workout. Workouts may begin in chest-deep water and progress to deeper water for added resistance.

Dance And Hip-Hop Classes ZUMBA® classes have been popular for quite some time. But many health clubs offer additional classes that employ dance to burn calories and tone muscles. Some gyms have developed their own cardio-based dance classes that get people moving to music.

The United States Department of Education routinely releases information on high school graduation rates across the country. The information is computed by dividing the number of students earning a diploma by the total enrollment, making note of students who transferred, emigrated or left school for other reasons. Educators and private

NORTHERN SUFFOLK

organizations continue to do their part to elevate the number of students who graduate in four years. Through its Grad Nation initiative, America’s Promise Alliance set a goal of a 90 percent graduation rate nationwide by 2015. Many people believe that the goal should be higher, encouraging a 100 percent graduation rate. www.seasonsmagazineonline.com

Travel Tips For Older Adults With Medical Conditions The opportunity to travel is one of the best perks of retirement. But while men and women over 50 may have more time to travel, they also must take more precautions when traveling, thanks in large part to medical conditions: Speak with your healthcare provider before any trips. Whether you are about to embark on an overseas adventure or just spend a couple of weeks visiting your grandchildren, speak to your healthcare provider in advance of your trip. Healthcare providers may recommend certain vaccinations to men and women traveling abroad, and providers also can explain coverage and what to do in case of a medical emergency while away from home. Refill your prescriptions. Men and women who must take medication should refill their prescriptions before traveling away from home. Doing so ensures you will have enough medication to last your trip. When filling a prescription, explain to your pharmacist and/ or physician that you are about to travel and tell them where you will be going. They may recommend you avoid certain foods native to your destination, or they may give you the greenlight to indulge in the local cuisine. Carry a list of your medications and medical conditions with you when traveling. Before

traveling, make a detailed list of the medications you take and why you take them. The list should include dosage and the names, both generic and brand name, of the medications you take. Include any past medical conditions, such as a heart attack, you have had as well. Carry this list with you when traveling. In case of emergency, the list will alert responding medical professionals to any current or past medical conditions you have. Keep medications in their original containers. Some men and women find it easier to remember to take their medications if they transfer pills from their original containers into pill organizers. Such devices can be very convenient at home, but they may create problems when traveling through customs or even on domestic flights. Pills can always be transferred to organizers upon your arrival at your destination; just make sure they are placed back into their original containers before you return home. Drink plenty of water on flights. Airplane cabins can be very dry, which can exacerbate dry mouth that results from taking medication. When boarding a flight, speak to the flight attendant and explain that you need some extra water so you can stay hydrated and avoid irritating dry mouth that may result from your medication. Don’t be afraid to ask the flight attendant for a light snack as well.
