Paint-Free Ways to Brighten Your Home Autumn is a beautiful time of year marked by pleasant temperatures and colorful fall foliage. But as vibrant as nature can be in the weeks after summer has ended, homeowners know that the shortened days of autumn mean less light inside their homes, which can become dreary even in the weeks before the arrival of winter.

Many homeowners pick up their paintbrushes in an effort to make their homes more colorful. But homeowners need not embrace their inner Picasso to brighten their homes’ interiors. The following are a handful of paintfree ways to add some splashes of color to your home this fall: Bring nature inside. Flowers and plants can make colorful additions to a home’s interior. Flowers tend to be aromatic, which can make a stuffy house in which windows need to be kept closed a lot more pleasant. Plants and flowers also can improve indoor air quality.

Several studies have shown that

houseplants improve indoor air quality by filtering out volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, that can be harmful to human health.

That’s especially important come late fall and winter, when homeowners typically shut their windows and keep them shut until spring, making it difficult for fresh air to enter a home.

Invest in some colorful throw pillows. Natural sunlight brightens a room come spring and summer.

But sunlight is increasingly scarce as fall turns into winter, and rooms that do not boast too many colorful accents can quickly grow drab as summertime sunlight dwindles. Instead of buying new furniture, invest in some colorful throw pillows to give a room a more vibrant look. Patterns can be mixed and matched to provide some contrast and transform a room from somewhere to spend time into a sight to behold.

Paper the walls. While many of today’s homeowners prefer paint to wallpaper, those who

want a less permanent solution to brighten up their homes may want to consider removable wallpaper.

Such paper is less expensive than traditional wallpaper, and many do-it-yourselfers find removable wallpaper is easy to both install and remove. Choose a colorful pattern that can turn an otherwise plain wall into a potent palette that adds some life to your home’s interior. Because removable wallpaper does not require a significant financial investment, you can experiment with various colors or change things up each month if you so desire.

Add some artwork. Another way to add color to the walls inside your home without dusting off your paintbrush is to hang some colorful artwork. Paintings that feature bold colors tend to draw your immediate attention when you enter a room, and that quality can make you forget the room is not benefitting from natural light. If you want to go the extra mile, find a painting

that features colors which match throw pillows or other accessories in the room. This way, your walls and your accessories are working in concert to make a room more colorful.

Rug it out. A patterned throw rug is another accessory that can effectively brighten a room without much effort or financial investment on the part of homeowners. When choosing a throw rug, find one that’s colorful but does not clash considerably with existing furnishings, as you don’t want the rug to draw attention for all the wrong reasons. You have more freedom with regard to rugs if you’re furnishing an empty room, as you can choose whichever rug you like and then choose additional furnishings based on the rug.

Hiking 101 Hints A warm breeze, the sound of a bubbling brook and the fresh smell of pine in the air are just some of the draws of hiking. There’s nothing quite like getting outdoors and enjoying nature.

Although hiking isn’t inherently dangerous, being at the mercy of the elements does imply some risk. As a result, it pays to be prepared when embarking on a hiking trip. Even novice hikers know to avoid bug bites and apply sunscreen before heading outdoors, but there are also some lesser-known potential hazards on the hiking trail. Heeding these tips can keep a person safe.

Plan ahead. Understand the terrain and the trails before you begin the hike. Visit the park or area’s official website to access detailed, printable trail maps and other information about the area. Make note of ranger stations, portable bathrooms and any other places you may want to use as pit stops along the way.

Give a copy of the trail map to someone staying behind, marking your planned place of entry. In the event you get lost, the person at

home can alert authorities to your approximate location.

Know your environment. Hiking trails can be found all around the world. Some may be arid and barren areas, while other areas may be lush and tropical. Each of these regions brings with them their own share of plants and animals. It is wise to know which species you may encounter along the way so you will know how to treat a bite or a brush with a poisonous plant in the event of an emergency.

Be mindful of the weather. Before going on the hike, get the latest weather report from a few different sources. This way you will have an average picture in your head of what the weather will be, and you can choose your footwear, clothing and other essentials based on that forecast. Few things can spoil a trip faster than unpredictable weather and failure to be ready for it.

Pack a supply kit. It’s easy to go overboard on gear, but there are some basics that should be hiking essentials. Include a first aid kit,

a Swiss Army Knife, matches or a lighter, aspirin, a flashlight, and toilet paper in your supply kit.

Bring water. Water is essential when going on a hiking trip. By the time you are feeling thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Bring at least 1 to 2 liters of water per person. Keep in mind that this may mean adding 3 to 4 pounds to the pack. When necessary, trade excess weight in other supplies for water, since water is most essential.

Drinking from springs or lakes is not adviseable. Animals bathe and relieve themselves in that water, and it might be teeming with bacteria.

Pack snacks. Bring along lightweight snacks, such as granola bars, dried fruit and nuts. Avoid sugary or starchy snacks that your body will burn up in no time, leaving you feeling hungry again. Keep food in tightly fitted containers so aromas won’t lure curious animals in close.

Embark early. The temperature is lower in the morning, and the sun is less intense in early morning as well. In addition, starting early

reduces the chance you will be hiking in the dark.

Be aware of your surroundings.

Although most animals will be content to avoid a hiking party, if they are provoked or caught off guard, they may defend themselves.

Watch where you are walking and avoid going off the trail. If scaling rocks, be careful where you put your hands. There may be snakes or small rodents lurking in crevices.

Carry a field guide. Refer to a field guide to help identify plants, trees and animals you may have seen.

Take plenty of photographs. Most hikers want to document the sights around them. Capture the moments with photos and be sure to make prints later.

Carry out only what you carried in. Litter can ruin a natural landscape and put animals in danger. Always bring a trash bag and remove your spent items. Also, leave nature as you found it. Resist the urge to take flowers or saplings or any other samples of the environment.

Planning a Fall Foliage Road Trip openings well in advance if you have your heart set on staying in prime leaf color country.

Come autumn, thousands of motorists take to the highways and backroads to experience the ever-changing landscape made beautiful by leaves changing colors. Fall foliage road trips make for a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon.

Employ a few tricks of the photography trade. Fall foliage may be at its most vibrant at sunrise and sunset when the sun is low in the sky and will not cast much glare.

Slightly overcast days also may help leaves’ colors pop, but too much cloud cover may cause a lack of vibrancy in leaf color.

With cameras in hand and provisions at the ready, motorists can make the most of their next fall foliage road trip: Know when to go. Learn the best times of the year to see the peak leaf colors. Mountainous regions and many located in northern latitudes will see changes in leaf color earlier than other regions.

Drivers living in certain areas of Canada, regions of the Rocky Mountains or, in particular, parts of New England can expect to witness leaves changing color as early as September, while much of the midwest can expect peak color in mid- to late-October. Southern regions may not see leaves change color until November.

Make the Most of “Dinner and a Movie” Night The “perfect date night” differs depending on the couple. Some couples might prefer a night on the town during which they get dolled up and visit a five-star restaurant, while others might find a laid back night at home makes for the ideal night for two.

Dinner and a movie has long been a go-to for couples who prefer something short of a fancy night out but more extravagant than a relaxing night at home. While making plans to dine out and catch a movie is not complicated, there are some things couples can do to make sure such nights go off without a hitch: Make a dinner reservation. If you’re going out on a Friday or Saturday night, be sure to make a dinner reservation in advance.

Chances are strong other couples have similar plans, and you don’t want to miss the movie because you were stuck waiting for a table at the restaurant.

Dinner and a movie nights tend to be impromptu, but make a reservation a few nights in advance if you’re planning on going out on a popular date night.

Oftentimes, such letdowns can be remedied by driving to another theater nearby that is showing the movie at a slightly later time than the initial theater the couple visited. One of the more vivid sights this time of year are the bright, orange pumpkins that adorn walkways and front porches of homes and businesses. Not only are pumpkins ideal for decorating, but they’re also great to eat.

Some people who plan to carve jack-o-lanterns mistakenly believe the same type of pumpkin can be used in their favorite recipes. But what carving pumpkins have in visual flair, they usually lack in flavor and substance. Instead, would-be pumpkin cookers should look to other varieties if they plan to serve pumpkin on the menu.

Many smaller pumpkins are better and sweeter for cooking. Mini pumpkins, sugar, cheese and pie pumpkins are varieties commonly used in recipes. The big jack-o-lantern pumpkins have stringy, watery flesh and will provide little to no pulp for cooking.

Slice the pumpkin in half and remove the seeds and any stringy material. Rinse and save the seeds for planting or roasting. You may want to strain the pureed pumpkin with a cheese cloth to remove any excess water before using in a pie recipe. Baked breads may benefit from the extra moisture.

Pumpkins are a great source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, riboflavin, potassium, copper, manganese, vitamin E, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. They’re also low in fat and calories. Pumpkin puree can replace the oil in some baking recipes.

Select a pumpkin as you would any other type of squash. Look for a firm pumpkin with no bruises or soft spots. The pumpkin also should have a deep orange color. Store pumpkins in a cool, dark area until ready for use to prolong freshness. Wash the exterior of the pumpkin in cool water before cutting to remove any dirt

Choosing Appropriate Extracurriculars Sports may be the first thing that comes to mind when many parents think of extracurricular activities for their children, but not all kids are cut out for or interested in competitive athletics. But just because a youngster may not be the next star quarterback or captain of the soccer team does not mean he or she can’t find an extracurricular activity to be passionate about.

Parents know that schoolwork comes first, but extracurricular activities can be important to a child’s development, serving as an avenue to meet new people and an opportunity to learn the importance of teamwork. The following are a handful of things parents should consider when trying to help their children find the right extracurricular activities.

Interests One of the easiest ways to help kids find an extracurricular activity they can be passionate about is to discuss their interests with them. Youngsters with a love of animals might enjoy volunteering at a local animal shelter or hospital, while those who love to write may find writing for the school newspaper is a great way to apply that passion in a practical setting. Even kids with a passion for video games might be interested in learning about computer graphics and what it takes to design games. When trying to find extracurricular activities for your children, resist the urge to write off any of their interests. Instead, use those interests as jumping off points to further engage their passions.

Availability Parents know that school comes before extracurricular activities,

but kids may not be so wise. Keep in mind kids’ existing workloads when helping them find the right after school activities. Many organizations are especially flexible with teenage volunteers or employees, but parents still must keep a watchful eye to ensure kids do not overextend themselves. Kids who overcommit to extracurricular activities may end up feeling burnt out, which can have a negative impact on their schoolwork. Encourage kids to find activities they care about, but emphasize that these activities should not become bigger priorities than school work. Let kids know that they can get more involved during summer vacation, but make sure kids don’t devote too much of their time to after school activities during the school year. A couple of hours per week and even some additional time on the weekends should not distract kids from their responsibilities at school, and that’s still ample time for kids to explore their interests.

Internships Internships were once exclusive to college students, but many organizations now offer internship opportunities to high schoolers as well. Kids who find themselves interested in particular subjects at school, whether it’s graphic design or a beginner’s course on finance, may be eligible for internships with local companies.

Such opportunities may even encourage kids to pursue a particular course of study once they enter college.

Extracurricular activities can help youngsters develop into wellrounded adults. Parents can help kids find the right activities while keeping schoolwork a priority.

Oktoberfest Fun for All Revelers look forward to Oktoberfest for various reasons. Great food, abundant drinks and festive music entertain the masses come Oktoberfest, so it’s no surprise that this German-inspired tradition is popular the world-over. While Oktoberfest is often thought of as an adults-only celebration, parts of the party can be modified to make the event more inclusive of younger guests.

Oktoberfest is the world’s longest fair, running for sixteen days from late September to the first weekend in October. More than six million people from around the world attend the event in Munich, Germany, each year.

Smaller Oktoberfest parties are held elsewhere, and the theme can be an interesting one for individuals who want to enjoy a harvest party that does not involve Halloween and costumes.

Including children in Oktoberfest celebrations is relatively easy. All you need to do is offer activities that do not involve alcoholic beverages. Try these ideas to get started:

STEIN RELAY Both adults and children can participate in this event, as long as party hosts can keep track of the beverages inside the steins. Adults can use beer, while kids’ cups can be filled with apple cider or root beer.

Participants take chances running their filled steins over to a serving tray and then carrying back the full tray without spilling. If any beverages are spilled, the person has to take a drink and then return to have the cup refilled. The team whose members all complete the race first is declared the winner.

POLKA FREEZE DANCE If a polka band is part of the festivities, ask them to participate in a game of freeze dance. Otherwise, hosts can use pre-recorded polka music.

Players dance to the music until it stops, and once it does, they have to freeze. Anyone who moves after the music has stopped is “out.” The last person standing is the winner.

Have children mold premade dough (pizza or crescent roll dough) into the shapes of pretzels. Provide different toppings, from salt to nuts to sesame seeds, that kids can use to adorn their pretzels. The pretzels can be judged on form and flavor.

BARREL OR SACK RACES Children can participate in races against the adults to see who has the most dexterity and speed. Plastic or wooden barrels can be rolled, or players can use burlap sacks for races.

CARNIVAL ENTERTAINMENT Since Oktoberfest is a large fair, carnival-type activities can make for a great and appropriate party. Party hosts can set up dunk tanks, a ring toss, darts and food-eating contests to round out the list of festivities.

Setting aside an area for a dance floor and hiring a band or deejay are some additional ways to create a fun atmosphere.

Every autumn, trees and shrubs take on their brilliant display of reds, oranges, purples and yellows that mark the end of the growing season. Fall foliage may make for ideal photo backdrops and scenic days in the countryside, but closer to home, leaves may be more of a hindrance than an aesthetic pleasure.

The hundreds of leaves that adorn the maples, oaks and other trees near homes will eventually fall as autumn turns into winter. Some will float down to lawns, while others will get lodged in gutters and downspouts, posing problems that can cause substantial and potentially costly problems for homeowners.

Homeowners know that gutter cleaning is an important part of fall home maintenance, but they may not completely understand why. Gutter cleaning can be a messy and time-consuming project, making it a project many homeowners are apt to put off.

Waiting to clean gutters can lead to considerable problems, so it’s best to tackle the job well in advance of the winter.

Gutters guide rainwater and runoff from the roof so it drains properly away from homes. When gutters are clogged with leaves, a number of problems can occur: Leaks: Water will take the path of least resistance. When clogged gutters do not allow the water to drain away properly, water will find other ways to the ground.

It may work itself right into the walls and ceilings of the home.

In addition to damaging walls and ceilings, moisture inside the home can promote mold growth.

It also makes interior spaces more appealing to pests.

Excess Weight: Gutters are meant to hold the weight of traveling water and not much more. Gutters filled with leaves and other debris can quickly become heavy. This stresses the entire gutter system and can cause the gutters to fall off of the home entirely.

Nesting Areas: Clogged gutters can serve as nesting areas for insects and birds. Mosquitoes and other insects lay eggs in pooling water. Gutters can quickly become breeding spots for harmful pests.

Furthermore, birds may nest in gutters, creating unsightly messes and more damage. Seeds that sprout in clogged gutters can grow unchecked.

Ice-Damming: Left untreated, pooled water and leaves in gutters can freeze over. Blocked water can back up and push against the roof, lifting shingles and destroying the roof in the process.

Foundation Trouble: Clogged gutters also may contribute to flooded basements and cracked foundations. Leaking water will pool around the foundation, expanding when frozen and causing cracks in basement and crawlspace walls. It also can cause driveways and other cement areas around the home to sag and crack.

Gutter cleaning should be scheduled in the spring and fall of each year. Homeowners can hire gutter-cleaning services to handle the job or do the job themselves.

Rinse the gutters with water from the hose afterward to ensure good run-off. Take the time to seal any leaks as well. This routine maintenance can save homeowners many headaches and prevent some very expensive repairs.

Inspect Tires Before Fall Road Trips Road trips are an autumn tradition for many people. Excursions to see the fall foliage can be aweinspiring, but drivers must make sure their vehicles can handle such jaunts. Tire inspections are essential before hitting the open road. The following are a handful of steps drivers can take to ensure their tires are up to the task: Give tires the eye test. The eye test can be an effective and quick way to detect tire damage.

Uneven wear may be indicative of insufficient tire pressure or an alignment problem. It also may indicate the vehicle is experiencing problems with its steering or suspension.

Many times, uneven wear can be remedied by a simple tire rotation, so take your vehicle to your mechanic if you notice this.

Look for stowaways. In the course of your travels, your tire might have picked up a few stowaways, such as nails and screws that are poking into the tire. If you find any freeloaders, take your car to

your mechanic, as your tires may need to be replaced.

Look for cracking or bulging treads. Cracking or bulging treads or sidewalls can eventually cause a blowout, which can put you and your fellow road trippers in serious jeopardy. This indicates tires are worn or weak, so bring your car to your mechanic for an inspection if you discover such problems.

Perform the penny test. The penny test can help motorists determine if tire treads are worn.

To perform the test, insert a penny with Abraham Lincoln’s head pointing upward into the tread. If the tread does not reach the top of Lincoln’s head, your tire’s treads are worn.

Check tire pressure. Right before you pack up the car to hit the road, check your tires’ pressure, making sure it is at the level recommended in your owner’s manual. Inflating tires to the proper level takes just a minute.

DIRECTIONS To make the streusel: In a food processor, combine the flour,

Minestrone Soup Makes 8 servings

INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 ounce pancetta, chopped (5-6 thin slices) 11/2 cups chopped green cabbage 1 cup chopped onions 1 cup sliced carrots 1/4 cup chopped celery 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 cup chopped, drained, canned plum tomatoes 2 quarts chicken broth 1/2 cup peeled, diced potato 1 ounce Parmesan cheese rind 3 ounces vermicelli or angel hair pasta, broken into 2-inch pieces (about 3/4 cup) 1/4 cup drained, canned chickpeas 1/4 cup drained, canned kidney beans 1/4 cup Pesto 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, as needed EDITION FOUR

DIRECTIONS Heat the oil in a soup pot over medium heat. Add the pancetta and cook until the fat melts, 3 to 5 minutes. Do not brown. Add the cabbage, onions, carrots, celery and garlic. Cook until the onions are translucent, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the tomatoes and saute another 2 to 3 minutes. Add the broth, potato and Parmesan cheese rind. Bring to a simmer and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes. Do not overcook.

Meanwhile, cook the vermicelli according to package directions, until tender. Drain. When the vegetables in the soup are tender, add the cooked vermicelli, chickpeas and kidney beans. Remove and discard the Parmesan rind.

Five Ways to Increase Home Fire Safety An average of seven Americans die each week as a result of house fires. Most fires occur in residential buildings between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when occupants are most likely to be asleep. Your first line of defense is fire preparedness: Install smoke alarms on every story of your home and outside sleeping areas. Be sure to test them monthly, clean them every six months and replace batteries in spring and fall. Having working fire alarms can cut your chance of dying in a fire in half!

Have a fire escape plan for your family and practice it. A small fire can spread rapidly - you may only have minutes or seconds to escape. When going over the details of your escape plan, check windows and doors to ensure all open easily. Know your local emergency number (911).

Never stop to gather belongings or reenter a home after safely outside.

When renovating, consider using fire-rated, noncombustible products.

Your choice of insulation, for example, can be vital. Stone wool insulation resists temperatures up to approximately 2,150 F. Fire-resistant building materials can give you extra time to escape when seconds count.

Purchase a multi-use fire ladder for each bedroom in your home and practice using it. A fire ladder may be your only escape option if flames block critical exits.

Place fire extinguishers on every level of your home, especially in high-risk areas like the kitchen, near fireplaces and in the garage. Use only for small, contained fires that are not spreading rapidly. Know how to operate your extinguisher before an emergency occurs using the PASS method: Pull pin, Aim low, Squeeze lever and Sweep from side to side. The safest option is always to evacuate and get help.
