There will be a sense of familiarity next year for many of the 18 Seaford High School athletes who signed their collegiate letters of intent on May 1. More than half of that group will be joined on a college sports team with at least one current Vikings teammate.

That group includes four members of the varsity football team, who have all committed to Springfield College – Aidan Calvacca,

Seaford Athletes Off To Colleges Near And Far

Anthony Janes, Devin O’Donnell and Jake Quinn. Three teammates from the cross country and track and field teams, Scott Heaslip, Patrick Leahy and Brady McGowan, are heading to SUNY Oneonta. From girls lacrosse, Madison Agostino and Amanda Beadle will suit up together for Molloy University, and cheerleaders Katie Kofod and Jessica Haering will bring their spirit and

athleticism to Sacred Heart University.

Other student athletes committing to college teams include Jake Anzelone, Navy, lacrosse; A.J. Cantore, Anderson University, baseball; Ashley Diaz, Presbyterian College, wrestling; Tim Navin, Wingate University, lacrosse; Daniella Stek, Drexel University, lacrosse; Isabella Strippoli, University of Rhode Island, cheerleading; and Amanda

Williamson, Queens University of Charlotte, lacrosse.

The evening signing ceremony was well attended by proud parents, coaches, administrators and Seaford Board of Education trustees. Kevin Witt, director of athletics, physical education and health, announced each athlete and highlighted accomplishments in his or her respective sport.

Playing at the collegiate

level, Mr. Witt explained, is a significant milestone as only 7% of high school athletes go on to play in college. This year’s group also represents more than 10% of Seaford’s Class of 2024.

Mr. Witt said that the achievement could not have been reached without the support of their teachers, guidance counselors, administrators, coaches and families. He noted that

in addition to succeeding in their sports, the 18 athletes have also excelled academically and display tremendous character. The event was held in partnership with the Seaford Booster Club, which provided each athlete with a large posterboard featuring the logo of his or her future university. Every athlete’s chair was also affixed with balloons representing the school’s colors.

Standing in a blizzard, trying to kick a soccer ball into a tiny goal, was when SUNY Cortland student Debra Linkner realized that being a physical education wasn’t for her. That moment in the early 1980s sparked her switch to elementary education.

Fast forward more than 40 years and Debra Emmerich, principal of Seaford Manor Elementary School, is preparing to wrap up a long and successful career. On Aug. 1, she will retire after 18 years in Seaford, including 14 at the helm of Manor.

Her career began in 1985, with five years at P.S. 327 in Brooklyn. She then taught fourth grade at P.S. 219 in Flushing, Queens, while also earning her master’s degree at nearby Queens College. Following a break to have her two children, Ms. Emmerich taught pre-school for five years, then returned to New York City schools in 2001, as a teacher and then as assistant principal. It was during her time at P.S. 181 that she completed her family by adopting three children from Russia.

A Rockville Centre native, she stayed connected to Long Island by coaching volleyball at her alma mater. In 2006, she arrived in Seaford as assistant principal for both elementary schools. After three years solely as the Harbor assistant principal, the Manor principal position opened up in 2010.

Ms. Emmerich helped shape academic, social and emotional and extracurricular programs at Manor and throughout the district. Her impact will be felt long after retirement, as she estimates she has hired 27 current Manor faculty members, as well as dozens

Seaford Principal Saying Goodbye To ‘The Best School In The World’

faculty did a car parade through the Manor section of the district to see their students. When school reopened, Manor hosted teachers who led the elementary virtual classes. She is extremely proud of the creation of the literacy lounge, a book resource center adjacent to the library. Ms. Emmerich is a strong supporter of balanced literacy and having children use books on their individual levels. Learning to read, she explained, leads to reading to learn.

As she heads into retirement, she’ll miss many annual events like playing the role of train conductor for “Polar Express” day in December, the March Madness book tournament, International Week, incoming kindergarten orientation, the fifth grade clap out and the 101st day of school for first graders, when they dress up like dalmatians and she portrays Cruella de Vil.

of support staff.

“People have told me I have high expectations,” she said. “My staff always rises to the occasion. They want to do a great job.”

The keys to motivating a staff, she explained, are treating everyone as equals no matter their position in a school, empowering teachers and staff to share and implement their ideas, and showing appreciation.

The energy within the staff can also be attributed to fostering a positive school climate. Ms. Emmerich has long been a believer that social and emotional learning is an essential part of school. Students need healthy minds to learn, and that means making sure they are heard.

She was strongly involved with the implementation of several SEL initiatives in the district including Character Counts, Growth Mindset, Habits of Mind, RULER and Seaford Scholars. A point of pride for her is when Manor and Harbor were named Habits of Mind Schools of Excellence in 2021.

Discipline is part of every principal’s job, but when issues do arise, Ms. Emmerich keeps in mind that she is first and foremost an educator.

“I have the approach that everyone makes mistakes,” she said, “and when we make a mistake, it’s a learning opportunity.”

Her office contains a binder with information

on every Manor student. Each summer, parents fill out surveys about their children, with information on their hobbies and interests, strengths and weaknesses, and personal and academic goals. Being a successful principal means knowing every child on a deeper level, she explained.

Ms. Emmerich has gotten to know the families well, and a few have been in Manor almost her entire time as principal as multiple siblings have passed through. She also maintains a very strong relationship with the PTA. Several memories stand out, such as Hurricane Sandy, when Harbor School was without power. Ms. Emmerich was

instrumental in devising a plan for Manor to house the district’s entire elementary population. For two weeks, each class had co-teachers and students from both schools were desk buddies. Recognizing that many Harbor students were dealing with the impacts of flooding, she made sure everyone at Manor was extra welcoming.

Every year the Autumn Classic, a fitness event at the high school track, kicks off with a rainbow photo – kindergartners in their red Character Counts shirts sit in front and fifth graders in their purple shirts stand in back with the other grades in between. In 2020 during the COVID shutdown, Ms. Emmerich and the

Ms. Emmerich thanks the four assistant principals she has had over the years – Patricia Gelling, Caroline Stringer, Mary Ellen Kakalos and Rich Schwartz – as well as the faculty, staff, students and families. She also values the relationships with the district’s other building administrators and the support from central office and the Board of Education. Those strong relationships, she noted, were the key to her success.

“I just feel very fortunate that I got to carry out my passion at Seaford Manor School,” she said. “It’s a home. It definitely is. Whoever takes over after me is going to be a very lucky person because they will have the best job in the whole world.”

Long Island Town Supervisors Advocate For Regional Shellfish Hatchery Project Will Improve Water Quality & Provide Economic Benefits

Together with a coalition of Nassau and Suffolk County Town Supervisors, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino is calling on state leaders to include funding for a Regional Shellfish Hatchery in the state budget. The initiative seeks to preserve Long Island’s maritime heritage and bolster shellfish stocks throughout New York, which will in turn improve local water quality and provide regional economic benefits.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is a leader in sustainability, as our existing shellfish hatchery has been instrumental in enhancing the local shellfish population and filtering pollutants from our coastal waters,”

Supervisor Saladino said. “Through collaboration with neighboring towns and state support for the Regional Shellfish Hatchery, we can extend these benefits across Long Island and beyond, ensuring a cleaner, healthier marine ecosystem for all.”

The proposed hatchery, to be located in Islip’s Hecksher Park, will serve as a hub for shellfish recruitment and resource enhancement in the Great South Bay. It will serve multiple purposes to meet the needs of the growing aquaculture community, promote economic growth, and ensure the continuation of the tradition of farming in the Great South Bay. The Town of Islip’s current facility is rapidly aging and has been negatively

impacted by climate change. Town Supervisors from across Long Island have joined these advocacy efforts, including Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Riverhead Town Supervisor Timothy C. Hubbard, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Daniel J. Panico, Smithtown Town Supervisor Edward R. Wehrheim, Hempstead Town Supervisor Donald X. Clavin, Jr., Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Z. Moore, Huntington Town Supervisor Edmund J. Smith, Southhold Town Supervisor Albert J. Krupski, Jr., Islip Town Supervisor Angie M. Carpenter, and North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer S. DeSena.

Seaford Students Expand Their Horizons On Museum Trips

Learning experiences for Seaford High School students go beyond their classroom walls. The World Culture Club recently took a trip to Ellis Island and the National Art Honor Society hosted a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Ellis Island trip featured 25 students, chaperoned by World Culture Club adviser and Spanish teacher Diana Arichabala, and guidance counselor Frank Stazzone. The ferry ride to Ellis Island, which featured an up-close

view of the Statue of Liberty, was a highlight for the students.

Once they arrived at the National Museum of Immigration, students looked at the different exhibits and researched own genealogy. Students had different levels of success in finding their ancestors.

Michael Villeck, vice president of World Culture Club, came across three possible relatives from Italy.

“I loved the experience,” said club Treasurer Adrianna LoBasso. “I was able to look back and see what years my

family came to America. It was a great dive into the history of our country.”

Club Secretary Isabella Rizea liked exploring the museum and seeing the different artifacts, and President Autumn Feitzinger particularly enjoyed the exhibit of old political cartoons.

Ms. Arichabala said that while Seaford High School students hail from different countries, a commonality for many of them is that their ancestors passed through Ellis Island in the late 1800s or first half of the 1900s.

They were able to send themselves digital copies of the records they found to share with their families.

The trip to New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art featured 51 students. It was an annual excursion prior to the pandemic and the opportunity was brought back this year.

All members of the National Art Honor Society and any student enrolled in an art class this year were invited to attend. Honor Society Adviser Michael Kerr said that because the museum has such an

extensive art collection, students were allowed to go around and see the exhibits that interested them, rather than take a guided tour.

“As a student who is dedicated to art, I got to see a lot of examples of the types of projects I have been doing throughout high school,” junior Lilli Dobbin said. She added that her favorite exhibits were the sculpture garden and Renaissance-era religious paintings.

Senior Isabella Buran liked viewing the oil paintings and teapots.

“It was nice that you

could see what interests you personally as an artist,” she said. “Seeing professional work in this museum is very cool and inspiring.”

Junior Ava Caruso marveled at the Egyptian temple, and also like seeing the European realism paintings. What struck her most, she said, was seeing artists at work throughout the museum trying to replicate different pieces.

“It was really great,” Ava said. “The coolest thing was seeing works of art that we’ve talked about in class.”

Town To Host Stand With Israel Rally In Recognition Of Jewish American Heritage Month

In recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month and in support of the State of Israel, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town will host a Stand with Israel Rally on Sunday, May 19th at 2PM in Plainview-Old Bethpage Park. At the event, a Holocaust Survivor, IDF Solider, and

the family of Omer Neutra, who was taken hostage by Hamas, will speak. Officials will also unveil a plaque for the Tree of Life, symbolizing hope, love and unity while forever remembering those lost to terror.

“On November 5, 2023, thousands of people gathered at this same park to express

support for the State of Israel and pray for the safe return of hostages held captive by terrorists,” Supervisor Joseph Saladino said. “Now, we will unveil a plaque for the Tree of Life, symbolizing hope, love and unity while forever remembering those lost to terror. The Town of Oyster Bay will always recognize

Israel’s right of sovereignty and peace and celebrate the Jewish community in our town.”

“We stand with the Jewish people and support the right for Israel to defend itself,” added Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato. “Please join us on May 19th as we come together as one voice

in observance of Jewish American Heritage Month and call for the safe return of all hostages.”

Local rabbis, Holocaust Survivor Alfred Weinberg, IDF Soldier Ira Kohler of Plainview, the family of hostage Omer Neutra of Plainview, and representatives from the

Mid Island Y JCC, Schechter School of Long Island and Nassau County Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center will lead the event. All residents are invited to attend.
