‘Give The Gift Of Life’ This Holiday Season By Donating Blood

With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage this holiday season, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invite residents to give the gift of life by donating blood on Thursday, December 15th, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life this holiday season through a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s

Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.

added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood at the Hicksville Athletic Center, is an incredible way for all of us to pitch in and give back during the holidays.”

The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. This organization has five service areas: Children & Youth, Family & Community, Senior & Nutrition Services, Vocational Services & Behavioral Health and Criminal Justice Services. Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they assist over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County.

EAC Network runs the New Path Treatment Center, which is an outpatient clinic located in Hempstead. The center offers a recovery process in a safe and full-service treatment program for individuals with substance abuse disorders.

Approximately 22.7 million Americans need treatment for drug or alcohol-related problems, and many will not seek treatment due to the stigma and shame associated with substance use disorders. The New Path Treatment Center is a place where trained and compassionate counselors work tirelessly to assist people in need. They address not only substance use itself, but all of its contributing factors, including mental health, physical health, family systems, socialization, smoking cessation, legal issues and employment. A personal treatment plan is developed for each individual to address their specific needs.

is possible and is a life-long journey, we can help to reduce the stigma of substance use and mental health disorders. Our role at New Path is to assist individuals to achieve and maintain their recovery goals. Our services follow a recovery model whereby participants are encouraged to develop their intrinsic motivation to make healthy lifestyle choices.”

How To Protect Yourself From Holiday Shopping Scams

Online scams cost Americans nearly $7 billion throughout 2021, according to the FBI, and with the holiday shopping season ramping up, it’s vital that people understand how to avoid falling victim to scams. “Scams often increase with consumer spending, making the holidays ripe for scammers trying to take advantage of the season’s sense of urgency and scarcity,” said Amy Maliga, a financial educator with Take Charge America, a nonprofit credit counseling and debt

management agency. “It’s not enough to be aware of scams, though. You have to learn how to watch for and avoid them so your happy holidays don’t turn into a nightmare.”

Maliga shares several things to do and watch out for to avoid falling prey to holiday shopping scams:

Use secure payment methods: Be wary of websites or sellers that request unusual payment methods like wire transfers, cashier’s checks or apps. Stick to secure payment options such as major credit cards or

PayPal.

Check for site security: Look for ‘https’ at the front of the site’s URL and the small lock icon in the browser window. These indicate that the website is secure, ensuring any data you share (such as credit card numbers or shipping details) will be encrypted when you submit it.

Watch for spelling and grammatical errors: If you notice a plethora of spelling and grammar mistakes on a website, social media posts or other promotional materials, you likely want

to shop elsewhere.

Pay attention to reviews: Reviews can reveal much about online retailers and sellers. Are there lots of poor reviews from buyers who didn’t receive what they purchased? Or are there numerous glowing reviews that all read alike? Either may indicate the site isn’t what it claims to be.

Watch for ‘phishy’ confirmation emails: If you receive a confirmation email for an order you didn’t place, ignore and delete it. Knowing people are likely making several orders, scammers will

send a phishing email disguised to resemble a confirmation notice from legitimate retailers. If it appears legit, try manually searching the order number on the retailer’s website instead of clicking on any included links.

Don’t let scammers steal your money or your holiday cheer. If a deal or website appears too good to be true, it likely is.

Town And Marines Collect Over 30,000 Toys For Tots

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Tom Hand, Councilman Steve Labriola, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and Assemblyman Michael Durso joined the United States Marines Corp. in hosting Long Island’s largest ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys for Tots Collection Drive at John Burns Town Park in Massapequa on December 3rd and 4th. In total, the Town of Oyster Bay collected over 30,000 toys for the less fortunate.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The 30,000 of toys collected at this ‘Cruise-Thru Holiday Toy Drive’ and by the Town of Oyster Bay will bring giant smiles to the faces of children this holiday season. I thank our residents for opening their hearts and wallets to generously give back to children in need during the holidays. This collection drive was the all-time largest single day collection on Long Island and demonstrated the love our community has for others.”

Seaford’s Multilingual Seniors Seek Seal Of Biliteracy

In just the second year it is being offered as a graduation option, 34 Seaford High School seniors are pursuing the Seal of Biliteracy designation. That would more than double the number of students who received it in June 2022.

World language department lead teacher

Patricia Foley said that the seal, affixed to a high school diploma, is awarded to students who show mastery in English and at least one other language. Students in the Class of 2023 are seeking this designation in Greek, Hebrew, Spanish and Turkish.

Kutay Sezer, who

lived in Turkey until he was 9, said earning the Seal of Biliteracy would demonstrate his mastery of the two languages he speaks fluently, with English being the second language he learned.

Jamie Young and Andrew Randazzo both have taken Spanish since middle school and want to

earn the Seal of Biliteracy to show how far their language skills have come over the past six years.

Jamie, who said that international business is a prospective career, knows that knowledge of another language and other cultures will be beneficial.

“It’s something that would be advantageous for college submissions and my future career,” added Andrew.

A few students are pursuing the seal in three languages, including Nicole Nietsch and Katerina Perlegis. Nicole Nietsch took Spanish as her world language in school and also learned

Hebrew through an afterschool program.

“It’s important to understand and relate to other people,” said Nicole, who wants to become a teacher.

Katerina also took Spanish in middle school and high school, and learned Greek from her family. Aspiring to work as a speech pathologist, she said the knowledge of multiple languages could help her communicate with children who don’t speak English as their native language.

To earn the Seal of Biliteracy, all students must complete culminating projects in

English and their chosen world language. The theme this year is contemporary life. Candidates will present their research in the spring before a panel of teachers.

Ms. Foley said she is thrilled that so many seniors are working to earn the Seal of Biliteracy and noted that knowledge of multiple languages is a beneficial life skill.

“We live in a very multilingual society, even in the United States itself,” she said. “It is definitely a skill they can utilize outside of the academic day and will benefit them in any career they choose.”

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them. Those interested in making contributions
