Seaford Public Library: NICE Bus Signs

The Nassau Inter-County Express / NICE Bus service is partnering with local libraries to bring attention to public libraries near bus stops. These special bus stop signs feature a QR code that, when scanned, takes people to that library’s website and letting the local community learn more about the FREE resources accessible to them and highlights the variety of events the library has to offer.

Library Director, Frank McKenna states “We are happy and appreciative to announce that we have installed two NICE bus signs located on Merrick Road near the Library. These NICE Bus signs are another great way of letting the public know about the services and programs the Seaford Public Library offers.”

Tis The Season For Giving

On Monday, November 21, 2022, Noelle Lambert and The Bryn Elliott Team launched a Holiday Donation Drive, benefitting the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, an organization that strives to end homelessness on Long Island, and to alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

“I’ve always been passionate about helping others, but more specifically assisting the homeless is really important to me,” said Noelle, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “When you strip away all the excess and get down to the basics - the minimum that one should have in order to put their best foot forward every day - what remains is a home, along with food, and the like. There are countless people struggling and facing homelessness right now on Long Island and it just feels like the right thing to do to help them.”

The drive will run through December 19th and has five drop-off locations throughout Long Island. “This year the organization is desperately in need of non perishable food and personal care items,” said Bryn Elliott, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker with The Bryn Elliott Team at Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “They’re also looking for clothing, socks and winter coats. We’re hopeful that this drive will make a difference by helping people who need it; especially during the toughest time of the year to be homeless.”

Every donation truly does make a difference. “We thank everyone in advance for their participation,” said Noelle. “We’re so appreciative of each business that has let us use their establishment as a drop-off location.” If you have any questions, please contact Noelle Lambert at 631.478.3819 or Bryn

LIPA Announces New Community College Scholarship

Officials from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) joined with representatives from Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College to announce a new community college scholarship program.

The LIPA Scholarship is designed to provide education and training for students from households with incomes below the median income of Long Island and the Rockaways (approximately $100,000 for a family of four) living in historically underserved communities.

The LIPA Scholarship is a $350,000 commitment over the next five years to provide 50 full scholarships for students to attend either Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College to obtain an associate degree or certificate that will help them pursue a career in the electric utility or clean energy sectors.

This investment is an effort to ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all of our customers can participate in the growing career opportunities available in the electric utility and clean energy industry.

Thomas Falcone, Chief Executive Officer of LIPA, said: “Electricity is the clean fuel of the future. Studies predict electricity will provide more than 70 percent of New York’s energy needs by 2050 and that it will be entirely carbon-free. With this growing industry, LIPA’s commitment to fund 50 scholarships at Nassau and Suffolk Community College over the next five years will ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all our customers can participate in the fabulous and growing career opportunities available in the electric sector.”

Dr. Maria Conzatti,

Interim President of Nassau Community College, said: “Together with LIPA, Nassau Community College is pleased to meet the workforce development needs of our business partners and the educational aspirations of the Long Island community.”

Dr. Edward T. Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College, said: “The Long Island Power Authority’s generous scholarships will help us recruit and sustain students entering the STEM fields, transforming our workforce and our region’s economy. With this support, LIPA joins the college in bridging our promising students from financial need to the high-need, high-wage disciplines that lead to a rewarding career.”

The curricula offered at Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College include courses relevant to the work LIPA does to meet the clean energy goals set by New York’s Climate Act, as well as to fulfill LIPA’s mission of providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy to Long Island and the Rockaways.

The LIPA Scholarship will support income-qualified, graduating high school seniors, allowing them to extend their educational development and enter the utility and clean energy sectors. Participation in the LIPA Scholarship will provide graduates with a competitive edge in applying for employment at LIPA and its contractor, PSEG Long Island, who plan to hire hundreds of entry-level workers over the next five years.

This five-year program will provide annual funding for ten full-time, two-year scholarships for low- to moderateincome students who reside in disadvantaged communities, as identified by New York’s Climate Justice Working Group,

planning to attend Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College. Residents of the following communities served by LIPA are eligible for the LIPA Scholarship:

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

www.mhaw.org

We close out November, the month in which we honor America’s veterans, with some final information about our Charity of the Month, the Ronkonkomabased Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

Among its wide range of mentalhealth-related services, MHAW offers many forms of assistance for veterans in Suffolk County. These offerings address affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, peer support, and other services.

To allow readers to get a humanscale picture of the real-life ways that MHAW supports local veterans in need, here are the stories of “John” and “Mary.”

“John” had served our country for more than eight years as a Marine, including witnessing the aftermath of the Beirut barracks bombings in 1983 that had killed 241 American personnel and dozens of others.

He proceeded to face major difficulty adapting to post-service life, and used food to help him cope. John became significantly overweight and homeless, with a hotel as his residence for two years. It was nearly impossible to find a house that accommodated his needs until he connected with “Housing Our Homeless Heroes,” an initiative that helps veterans regain their sense of independence with supportive housing.

Happily, John is now living in a stabilized environment with dignity and respect.

As a second example, “Mary” had been discharged from the service last August, had no income, nowhere to go, and unfortunately was living in her car. She reached out to the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, run in collaboration with the Economic

Opportunity

Mary worked with the SSVF team to locate and obtain permanent housing. She also worked with a case manager and a health care navigator to apply for the VA’s service-connected disability program, where she was approved for 100-percent compensation. Mary was also connected to the Northport VA Medical Center, where she began receiving health care. In addition, Mary worked with an employment specialist who assisted her with her resume, job search, and interview prep.

As a result, Mary ultimately secured a full-time job. She has expressed her gratefulness to MHAW and to EOC of Suffolk for the critical assistance she received at the time when she needed it most.

After all they have given to America, our veterans deserve support from all of us here in Suffolk County and across the nation. With this in mind, we urge you to play a role in introducing local veterans in need to MHAW.

If you know such a veteran, have them contact Marcelle Leis, MHAW’s Director of Veteran Services, by calling 631-946-0147, or by emailing mleis@ mhaw.org.

Insurance Tips And Information

Review Your Auto Coverage

Have you reviewed your insurance coverage this year? Within the past five years? Unfortunately, most people’s eyes glaze over when offered the chance to review their coverage. “Everything is fine,” they instinctively say, stalwart in their effort to not-be-sold anything. The problem is our lives our dynamic and ever changing. We must alter our coverage to fit our ever-changing physiques.

In the consumer focused, internet age, we can choose the coverage we want. Seldom, however, do our needs remain the same

from year to year. A la carte coverage is as fickle as our craving for dessert. Do you want or need Rental

Reimbursement? Towing and Labor? Low mileage discount? Did you waive Rental Reimbursement because the family had an extra car? Have you since gotten rid of that car? Or has a kid matured into a driver of that car? Or might someone have retired and made the need for a car superfluous? Were you a decades long member of AAA or another motor club? Did your leased car come with roadside coverage? Have you cancelled motor club or returned the leased car and NOT added Towing and Labor to your auto policy? Did you take a job working from home or commuting by LIRR? Did you do the opposite? Is your mileage radically different than it was before? Call your agent and talk about changes in your life. Review your coverage considering how you live.

Seaford Middle School Is Bustling After Hours

After the school day ends at Seaford Middle School, classrooms are still full of life with engaging extracurricular activities. The school offers 15 different clubs, each with a different focus so there’s something for everyone. The Arts and Crafts Club meets every Tuesday and typically draws a strong crowd of students looking for some hands-on fun. Adviser Lisa Jones said that projects have been wideranging, giving students a chance to work with different materials and try multiple techniques. This year, they have made duct tape pencil cases for the start of school, 3D bat paintings for Halloween, yarn turtles, paper pumpkins and thankful trees.

Ms. Jones typically leads students through the project with a guided demonstration and provides all of the materials. To generate interest, she showcases the upcoming project in the cafeteria a few days before each meeting.

Students in the Science Club have been preparing for the upcoming science fair. Advisers Roseann Zeblisky and Kevin Mullany have been working with them to understand the scientific method, so they can follow the proper procedure to create their experiments.

Each meeting also includes a group experiment. At a recent meeting, students learned about the effect of temperature in an

Alka Seltzer experiment. Students poured cold, room temperature and hot water into three separate bags, then added an Alka Seltzer tablet to each and sealed the bags. They then watched the reaction to see which bag inflated the fastest.

The student council, led by advisers Maureen Dolan and Dan Hayden, takes on school and community service initiatives throughout the year. In November, student leaders supported a Thanksgiving food drive that is organized by the high school’s student government. Middle school student council members promoted the food drive among their sixth, seventh and eighth grade peers, and collected and sorted donations.

Stop & Shop’s Turkey Express Program Benefits Long Island Food Banks

Stop & Shop donated 2,000 Thanksgiving turkeys to Island Harvest and Long Island Cares during the first intermission when the New York Islanders host the Calgary Flames at UBS Arena in Elmont.

The Food Bank Presidents participated in the Stop & Shop Shoot-Out –attempting a center ice shot to secure their donations.

The donation of turkeys is part of Stop & Shop’s

annual Turkey Express program which provides more than 25,000 turkeys to hunger relief organizations across the supermarket’s footprint.

As the official supermarket of the Islanders, Stop & Shop’s donation spotlights the increased need the Food Banks are facing going into the holiday season:

Island Harvest Food Bank expects to collect and distribute 14,500 turkeys

and tens of thousands of pounds of trimmings necessary to complete a holiday-style meal for Long Islanders coping with food insecurity.

Island Harvest Food

Bank serves approximately 300,000 families at various times during the year.

Last year the food bank supplemented 18 million meals for Long Islanders struggling with food

insecurity.

Across Long Island, more than 148,000 students are qualified to receive free or reduced-price school meals.

Town Seeds South Shore Waters With 2 Million Baby Clam Seedlings

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato took to the waters off TOBAY Marina on the Town’s south shore to help replenish the shellfish supply by adding 2 million baby clam seedlings to the Great South Bay.

STOP & SHOP’S TURKEY EXPRESS PROGRAM

- Paule Pachter, Chief Executive Officer of Long Island Cares (far left) and Randi Shubin Dresssner, President & CEO, of Island Harvest (2nd from left) took part in a charity shootout between the first and second period of Islanders- Flames game at the UBS Arena, as Stop & Shop donated one thousand Thanksgiving turkeys each to Long Island’s two food banks. Stop & Shop’s Stefanie Shuman (2nd from right) and Shanon Karafian (far right) looked on. The donation is part of Stop & Shop’s Turkey Express program, in which the Supermarket donated 25,000 Thanksgiving Turkeys to food banks across five states.

Gas-Saving Tips

(NAPSI)—Conserving gasoline saves motorists money and lessens America’s dependence on foreign oil. These gas-saving tips are from the experts at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the group that tests and certifies automotive technicians.

• Keep tires properly inflated and wheels in alignment.

• Clean out clutter and unnecessary items to lessen the burden on the engine.

• Consolidate trips and errands; try to travel when traffic is light to avoid stop-

and-go conditions.

• Go easy on sudden, hard accelerations; don’t speed; anticipate traffic patterns ahead and adjust your speed gradually.

• Keep the engine running at its peak by replacing filters and fluids as recommended in the owner’s manual and having engine performance problems such as rough idling corrected.

• Use windows and airconditioning wisely. At highway speeds, it’s better to keep windows up (and air-conditioning on, if wanted) to reduce air drag. But turn off the A/C in stop-and-go traffic to save fuel.

“We are pleased to officially bring our highly successful seeding program to south shore waters, as we disperse these seeds that were grown right in our own Shellfish Hatchery. Programs like this not only enhance water quality, they help bolster

the local economy and improve the resiliency of our coastal communities,” said Supervisor Saladino. The Supervisor explained that the seedlings are just 2 millimeters in size when they first start out in the Town’s Shellfish Hatchery. From there, they move from those specialized tanks into a FLUPSY – a Floating Upweller System –which protects the young shellfish as they continue to grow and mature. From just 2 millimeters, those seedlings reached 15-20 millimeters, an ideal size for seeding the waterways. Those seedlings are placed strategically to help repopulate the shellfish

harvesting population but also effectively clean and filter the waterways.

“This great environmental initiative preserves the quality, resiliency and natural beauty of our waterways, and we’re so proud to have expanded this program so much over the past few years on both shores of our Town,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “We’ve successfully placed more than 10 million shellfish into our waterways each year, thanks largely in part to our great Shellfish Hatchery, helping to strengthen the local economy and keep our waters clean.”
