Town Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks Open On November 25th

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto announce that the Town’s outdoor ice skating rinks at Marjorie R. Post and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks will officially open for the season on Friday, November 25th and remain open through Sunday, February 26th

“Ice skating is a fun activity for residents of all ages to enjoy, and the Town’s outdoor ice rinks provide the perfect setting to relax, unwind, and take in the wonderful winter atmosphere,” said Councilman Imbroto. “Our outdoor ice rink facilities are the perfect antidote to combating cabin fever during the winter months, and are

the ideal way to help make coping with the cold fun and enjoyable!”

Public Skating Sessions are available at both outdoor rinks on Fridays from 4pm-6pm and 7pm-9pm, Saturdays from 1pm-3pm, 4pm6pm, and 7pm-9pm, and Sundays from 1pm-3pm and 4pm-6pm. Adjusted hours take effect during Holiday Breaks, with information available on the Town’s website.

For residents wishing to take advantage of ice skating but do not wish to be outdoors, the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is open year-round and is located at 1001 Stewart Ave. in Bethpage. Indoor skating is open to the public seven days a week, including: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays

from 4pm to 5:30pm and 8:30pm to 10:30pm; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 12pm; Saturdays from 2:45pm to 5:45pm; and Sundays from 2pm to 5pm. While the Ice Skating Center is open on New Year’s Day, it will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and for Special Events.

Seaford Wellness Council Announces

17th Annual Hot Chocolate 5K Run/Walk

After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the Seaford Wellness Council proudly announces the 17th Annual Hot Chocolate 5K Run/Walk. This year’s motto is fittingly “A Warm Welcome Back.”

The community event will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2022, starting at 9:00 AM. The race will be conducted with the starting and finishing line in front of Seaford High School at 1575 Seamans Neck Road, Seaford.

Participants can enroll for the run/walk online through the Wellness Council website (www. seafordwellness.com) or can register in-person on Friday night, December 2nd between 5:30 PM and 8:00 PM or immediately before the event on Saturday, December 3rd from 7:30 AM to 8:45 AM. In-person registration will take place in the Manso Auditorium in Seaford High School. Online registration is $25 and inperson registration is $30. All participants receive

a high-quality tee shirt with an uniquely designed event logo. Hot chocolate and bagels are served afterwards, and an awards ceremony and extensive raffle are held post-race.

According to Mike DiSilvio, Council President, “This is a wonderful community event which commences the holiday season in Seaford. Runners, walkers, and their families have always had a fun-filled time at the Hot Chocolate Run/ Walk. We are so pleased to return to the tradition of this event.”

All proceeds from the event are used exclusively for positive change programs in the Seaford community. The Council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Council Treasurer Donna de la Bastide states “Every single dollar the run/walk generates is used by the Council to improve the quality of life in Seaford through various wellness activities, beautification programs, and the funding of presentations for children, young adults and

parents that encourage good health and wellness.”

This year’s three Honorary Co-Starters were chosen, as has been tradition, from members of the Seaford Chamber of Commerce who have been awarded as the Businesspeople of the Year over the past two years.

Nicole Consi and Laura Giacalone, co-owners of LaCole Salon, and Victoria Van De Ven of State Farm Insurance Agency are the Honorary Co-Starters. Ken Nersesian, Council Vice President commented “These three women are immeasurably involved in the Seaford community and truly represent the Seaford spirit. The Council could not have chosen better ambassadors to be this year’s Honorary CoStarters.”

The Seaford Hot Chocolate 5K Run/Walk has been recognized as the third largest community based 5K run/walk on Long Island. It is anticipated that this year’s event will eclipse the fun-filled experiences of the previous sixteen years.

Santa’s Mailboxes From North Pole Have Arrived In Town Offices

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that children can send their ‘holiday wish list’ directly to Old St. Nick at the North Pole through a special network of Santa’s Mailboxes which arrived in Town facilities from the North Pole. Mailboxes will accept letters now through Monday, December 12th.

The Town of Oyster Bay will forward letters to Santa at the North Pole. Letters received by Monday, December 12th with a legible name and return address will be answered by Santa before the holiday. No postage is necessary.

Service First, Sports Second As Seaford Football Hosts Food Drive

It wasn’t just a team effort, it was a teams effort, to fill several large boxes with food at the final regular season football game of the year for the Seaford Vikings. Students on the varsity team, the cheerleading squad and the opposing football team, the Clarke Rams, all contributed to a food drive for Island Harvest on Oct. 28. Fans were also encouraged to donate nonperishable items, with boxes placed at the entrance to the stands.

Michael Corcoran said that one of his initiatives since taking over as Seaford’s head coach two seasons ago has been getting his players involved in community service. He said that by developing a

service mindset at a young age, they are more likely to maintain a giving spirit as adults. The team decided to do the food drive at the last home game of the year because it was the closest to Thanksgiving.

“It’s something that we’ll definitely try to do again next year,” he said of the food drive, noting the large amount of donations received this year. “It’s very important to be community minded and it’s something that Seaford does very well.”

For their efforts in helping to make the food drive a success, Coach Corcoran thanked the president of the Seaford Booster Club, Bridget Ulzheimer, head coach of the varsity cheerleading

team, Lisa Ferrari, and head coach of the Clarke team, Kevin O’Hagan, who is also a Seaford resident.

Seaford senior football players Ryan Baldwin and T.J. Harrington said that everyone on the team pitched in by donating food. By partnering with their opponents to help those in need, they showed how some things are bigger than sports.

“People in the school and the community look up to us,” T.J. said. “It’s good for them to see familiar faces doing something good for the community.”

Added Ryan, “It’s very important to help our community. We’re the faces of it. It’s good to represent Seaford pride.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” in an effort to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces as well as movies for children’s hospitals. Donations will be accepted November 1st through November 30th and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with Big Hy for Heroes for our 5th Annual DVD Collection Drive and send thousands of DVDs to troops serving around the globe as well as to children receiving care in local hospitals. Help support these brave men, women and children by donating DVDs.”

The Big Hy for Heroes organization was founded in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to

U.S. troops overseas. Over the years, Big Hy for Heroes has shipped hundreds of thousands of DVDs all around the world, and continues to do so today.

Exciting, suspenseful, comedy and classic DVDs are among the most requested by the troops for movie nights. Children’s movies are needed for local hospitals. Residents can donate DVDs at any of the

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW)offers a wide range of assistance to veterans in Suffolk County, home to more veterans than any county in the state. These offerings address affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, peer support and other services.

In this article, we’ll look at Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), an initiative in which MHAW collaborates with the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. SSVF programs provide housing and support services to eligible, low-income veteran families who are homeless, or who are about to become homeless.

Regrettably, America’s veterans require a number of support services. The National Library of Medicine recently estimated that up to 16 percent of U.S. service members who had been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq now have post-traumatic stress disorder or depression. Their other health concerns include suicide, traumatic brain injury, substance use and instances of interpersonal violence.

While Long Island has made significant strides in addressing homelessness among veterans in recent years, “Suffolk County still has its population of homeless veterans,” said Marcelle Leis, a retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeant who serves as MHAW’s Director of Veteran Services. “They’re living in train stations or they might be living in the woods. Yet even though they’re in need, these individuals often don’t trust government or community agencies enough to step forward and request assistance. And they often don’t feel safe going into shelters.”

Community-based resources like SSVF, says Ms. Leis, can make a major difference in these veterans’ lives by helping them deal with mental health

issues, poverty and their need for supportive systems.

Some SSVF services include personal financial

planning, credit counseling and income support services. Qualifying veterans may also obtain legal assistance, housing counseling and healthcare navigation.

In relation to employment, SSVF also offers vocational and rehabilitation services through the state’s Department of Labor Employment Training Assistance by way of Suffolk County’s One-Stop Employment Center.

Also, SSVF provides case management services, as well as peer support and outreach services through MHAW’s Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Veterans may also receive assistance obtaining VA and other public benefits though the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency.

SSVF can also help veterans with temporary financial assistance in the form of rental assistance, utility bills, security or utility deposits, moving costs and childcare support. Eligible veterans may be single, or part of a family in which the head of the household, or spouse, is a veteran.

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.

Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

Well-Rounded Seaford Student Honored In Heisman Competition

Seaford High School senior Nicole Nietsch is a school winner in the 2022 Heisman High School Scholarship competition. The award recognizes students for their outstanding achievements in academics, athletics and community service.

Nicole has been playing sports since she was a kid, participating in PAL and CYO sports programs as well as a travel basketball team. At Seaford High School, she is a member of the Long Islandchampion girls varsity

soccer team, and will be playing basketball in the winter season and lacrosse in the spring. She is committed to play lacrosse at Mercyhurst University, where she plans to major in music education.

Academics are equally important to Nicole, who has taken several collegelevel courses in high school, including Advanced Placement BC Calculus and AP Music Theory this year. Her academic achievements earned her induction into the National Honor Society,

a community serviceoriented organization that has helped her fulfill the third mission of the Heisman scholarship.

Additionally, Nicole is ranked in the top 25 of the Seaford Class of 2023.

Nicole plays in the percussion section of the marching band and symphonic band, and was one of three drum majors for this year’s marching band show. She was selected to the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

“It feels good to be recognized,” she said of

the award. “It shows that you don’t have to focus on just one aspect of school, but can excel in all areas.”

Nicole learned about the award in the guidance department and decided to apply. More than 5,700 students across the country were named school winners in this year’s competition, awarded by the Heisman Trophy Trust. Nicole will continue on for the chance to become a state winner, national finalist or national winner, which carry scholarship prizes of up to $10,000.

A Classic Way To Get Some Exercise

A 27-year tradition that celebrates the changing of the seasons continued on Oct. 6 as Seaford Manor Elementary School hosted its Autumn Classic.

The annual event encourages physical fitness and also focuses on positive character traits. Students wore their Character Counts shirts, which were provided by the PTA, and gathered on the blacktop

for a schoolwide photo. They had all of the colors of the rainbow represented, from kindergartners in red to fifth graders in purple.

Each grade had a halfhour to run, jog and walk around the track at the adjacent Seaford High School. There were also some hurdles to add other physical fitness components.

Children were joined by Principal Debra Emmerich,

Assistant Principal MaryEllen Kakalos, their teachers and family members for multiple laps around the track on the sunny fall day. The event was organized by physical education teachers Michael Corcoran and Dianne Dunn to emphasize that working out with family and friends bring enjoyment and creates lifelong fitness habits.
