trauma counseling from FEGS and its partners. These funds will help us address the longterm impact of Sandy on children which can potentially be even more damaging than the physical effects.” During and after times of disaster, the Red Cross knows that emotional support is a major element in recovery. The widespread devastation of property by Sandy left immediate and lasting emotional needs for adults and children affected by the storm. John Miller, CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island, said: “Children were affected by Superstorm Sandy in ways that people often overlook, and this grant will help support the youth of Long Island in their recovery.” Superstorm Sandy is the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received $308 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of September 30th, the Red Cross has spent or committed $280 million – more than 90 percent of the donated funds. Donations to the American Red Cross after Superstorm Sandy have led to clear signs of progress and hope through New York and New Jersey

Regents diploma. The academy serves students who are struggling in the mainstream high school setting, with issues such as failing grades and insufficient credits for graduation. The Career Academy offers an alternative for those who are at risk for dropping out, are dealing with social or personal challenges that cause interruptions with school requirements, and those who are disengaged with school or have poor attendance. It maintains small class sizes for a better teacher-to-student ratio, and provides educational support services to assist in achievement. Career Academy students can also take advantage of elective and online learning opportunities. A host of other specialized alternative programs, tailored to specific student needs, will now make their home at Barry Tech as well. Among them are the English Literacy Alternative Program, Springboard High School Equivalency, the Teenage Parenting Program, Positive Alternative Twilight High School, and the Young Adult Workforce Transitional Program. Operating out of Barry Tech will also be the HomeBound Program and the Nassau BOCES Virtual School. “We are working to assist the efforts of districts and families to meet the educational goals for all students, to help them graduate, prepare for college or become career ready,” said Barry Tech Principal James Clark. “Giving these programs a home at Barry Tech and access to our resources offers these students even more support, providing our component districts greater value.”

(NAPSA)-The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health created the Make the Call, Don’t Miss A Beat campaign jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie to educate, engage and empower women and their families to recognize the symptoms of heart eye contact with my audience? students are these days. Evolving Over Time Well, with rare exception, I can pretty much assure you that two of the three options NEVER happened. Rather, I was a big fan of: write it out, rehearse it to the point of practically memorizing every line anyway, but don’t dare stray from the script – after all, you might mess it up, miss a word, lose your place, whatever… and we couldn’t have that! What captivating presentations they must have been. Fast forward to the present day when, by virtue of my career, I have been afforded several opportunities to speak to those up-and-coming students in the field, ranging from the age of 8 to … whatever age it is college

of a journalistic nature, having been employed in this area for the better part of the last nine years. And so, in the interest of evolving to meet these expectations, I have tentatively taken on these speaking engagements, preparing for each in my own unique way – and hoping, fingers crossed, that I can make an adequate impression. So far, so good. Practice does – eventually – make perfect. I will never possess the natural gift that others do; however, I no longer cringe at the prospect of an audience either. I suppose it’s fortunate that the majority of my job can be conducted via the written word.

Sleep Apnea (NAPSA)-Sleep apnea increases snoring and may make you more likely to have a car accident, says the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Fortunately, a dental device resembling an athlete’s mouth guard is 70 percent successful at treating sleep apnea. Learn more at www. leadingdentists.com.

The Salvation Army traditional Red Kettle Holiday Program will begin soon and is in need of volunteers to ring the bells at the Red Kettles, as well as musicians & singers. Many locations are available, including local grocery stores, shopping centers and malls. When volunteers fall short, we hire paid bell ringers at $9 per hour. Table Top Red Kettles are smaller versions can be placed on a retail counter or at your place of work or business. The Salvation Army Angel Tree is a unique way of giving holiday gifts and needed clothing to deserving children on a more personal basis. Angel Tree Tags are placed on a traditional Christmas Tree, usually located at a mall or shopping center. Each tag has the child’s age, sex, clothing sizes and a wish list of toys, gifts and clothing needed. While many malls continue the tradition, we have many companies and office buildings that have set up Angel Tress with great success! Remember, 89 to 95 cents of every dollar collected goes directly toward the many Salvation Army programs. The Salvation Army Adult Rehab Centers (ARC), like the one in Hempstead which can house up to 100 recovering from drug & alcohol abuse, receives its funding from donations of clothing & household items that are sold in thrift stores, as well donations of cars, trucks and boats. tax dollars to pay for this type of project since it would run on county land, according to Conboy. However, the district never lost sight of the goal of making the access driveway a reality. “We are certainly elated by the news,” Conboy said. Seaford Board of Education President Brian Fagan said, “This has been a passion for this board for quite some time. We worked with our Central Administration as well as the community and of course elected officials to keep this on the radar. We were pleased to learn that because we maintained the plans and renewed the permits for this project and the strong efforts of our community, we were able to help make this a reality. The entire Board of Education expresses their gratitude to our administration, district parents, and our elected officials, especially Mr. Mangano and Nassau County for making this commitment.” Kind Words Kind words do not cost much. After years of effort to get an access driveway constructed at the trafficclogged Seaford Harbor Elementary School, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano has made a commitment to the residents of Seaford and Seaford School District to provide the necessary funding for the project. The 310-foot access driveway would be constructed on countyowned land running from Bayview Street just north of the school to Ionia Street. The access driveway is expected to be gated at both ends, but would be opened to alleviate traffic and provide an emergency exit if necessary. Currently, the only roadway from the 50-year-old elementary school is heavily congested during morning and afternoon drop-off and pick-up times. District officials are awaiting the InterMunicipal Agreement

SAFE AT HOME - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray was recently honored by officials from the Seaford Little League for teaming up with the organization to open a new league office in Seamans Neck Park. When the local elementary school that housed the league office for many years closed, a new base of operations was needed. The league purchased a large trailer for league activities and Supervisor Murray agreed the perfect spot for a new home “base” would be Seaman’s Neck Park.

What Your Neighbors Are Saying!! From the first phone call to the final handshake, Tom Miller remained in a class all by himself. We would certainly use Mr. Miller for all future real estate dealings, and highly recommend him to relatives, neighbors and friends. ~ Bob F.

Tom Miller is and excellent Agent. He was always very professional and courteous. Your office should be proud to have a gentleman like him represent Century 21. He has extreme knowledge of the real estate industry. He was also prompt with appointments and always returned our phone calls immediately. He was sensitive to us knowing it was a difficult decision to sell our home after being in it for 44 years. We are pleased with our decision and look forward to our new life in a 55+ community. We certainly would recommend Tom to our friends and neighbors. ~ Louis L. This whole transaction went as smoothly as possible and felt I was in good hands thanks to Tom Miller. I was extremely satisfied with every aspect regarding the sale of this home Thank You. ~ Larry I. We would like to advise anyone who wants to sell their house, as opposed to just listing their house to call Tom Miller and do exactly what he tells you to do. We followed his advice to the letter and our home was sold in less than two weeks in a very tough market environment. He is a Pro’s Pro. ~ Barbara L. Tom is the epitome of professionalism. This is the third time we have had the pleasure of dealing with him. He is extremely thorough and stays in touch even when there is no information to share.
