Residents Invited To Enter Free Holiday Concert Lottery

With the holiday season fast approaching, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents to enter a ticket lottery for this year’s Town Holiday Concerts, being held in early December at the Tilles Center at LIU Post in Brookville.

“Due to the overwhelming popularly of these amazing shows, the Town hosts a lottery for residents interested in attending,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “This provides a fair and impartial system that has

proven to be successful, and gives all residents an equal opportunity to attend one of our wonderful performances. As always, this outstanding holiday entertainment is provided free of charge for our residents.”

This year’s Holiday Concerts are scheduled for two evenings: Monday, December 5th and Tuesday, December 6th at 7:30pm; as well as a matinee performance on Tuesday, December 6th at 2pm.

available on the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com, or can be received by calling (516) 797-7925. Residents may receive up to two tickets per household. All entries must be received by Tuesday, November 1st at 4:45pm. Long Island Cars “Fall Harvest” Car Show & Swap Meet

On Sunday, October 23rd “Long Island Cars” will present the “Fall Harvest” Car Show & Swap Meet on the scenic grounds of Flowerfields Fairgrounds in Saint James. Bathed in autumn colors, Flowerfields Fairgrounds, once a turn of the century flower farm, will be filled with classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, one-of-a-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, muscle cars and imports. Show cars will compete in classed judging; trophies will be granted in more than fifty categories. Acres of vendors will be well stocked for this large end of the season show, where you can buy, trade, sell or swap auto parts, equipment, accessories, collectibles and literature, plus a wide variety of cars will be for sale in the “Car Corral.”

There is a pumpkin patch with free pumpkins for the kids. You’ll experience live music, fun fair food and more. The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.

“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to

promote emotional and psychological release through creative

movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

Don’t forget, this entire month is designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. Free Family Fall & Halloween Festival

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Family Fall & Halloween Festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 22nd, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, located at 451 Unqua Road in Massapequa.

“This festival is a great opportunity for residents to celebrate Halloween and

the fall season with activities that are fun for residents of all ages,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Families are sure to enjoy all that the festival has to offer, including pumpkin picking and our popular Halloween hayride. Remember, costumes are encouraged!”

The Family Fall & Halloween Festival will feature a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to pick their own pumpkins (while

supplies last), Halloween games and giveaways, inflatables, hay ride, food trucks, and games. Costumes for those attending are encouraged!

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Sought

Breast cancer survivors can help others coping with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The four-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays in November (November 1, 8, 15 and 22) from 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. Attendance at all four sessions is necessary.

This in-depth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Those who complete the training will have opportunities to provide support and guidance on the hotline; attend community outreach events to support underserved communities;

deliver educational presentations and speaking engagements; assist with local and national press and media; and help with fundraising efforts.

Senator John Brooks Delivers Funding Award To Support Long Island’s Disabled Youth Community

Senator John E. Brooks (SD-8) was proud to present a funding award of $10,000 to The Hagedorn Little Village School to support its Creative Arts and Recreation Program (“CARP”).

Founded in October 1969 by Caryl Bank, Ph.D. and Barbara Feingold, Ph.D., The Hagedorn Little Village School, Jack Joel Center for Special Children (HLVS) is a publicly funded, not-for-profit school that provides educational and therapeutic programs to infants, pre-school, and elementary school children with a wide range of developmental disabilities. The students present with various disabilities, which may include cognitive delays, social/emotional deficits, autistic spectrum disorders, speech/language delays, orthopedic and or motor impairments, visual impairments, and/or significant medical issues.

Growing from three children in a one-room schoolhouse to now serving approximately 500 children, ranging in age from birth through elementary school, in a state-of-the-art school in Seaford, New York, the mission at HLVS is to help

each child they serve achieve their highest potential, educationally, emotionally and socially by creating a nurturing environment for the child and a supportive framework for their families.

A full range of support services are offered to families residing in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and New York City, including special education, inclusionary programs, and therapeutic services that strive to help improve the development of young children with and without disabilities.

Licensed professionals are also available to provide evaluations, early intervention, special education services and therapies at no cost to families.

One such support program offered is the Creative Arts and Recreation Program (“CARP”), a 6-week summer program conducted on site, and taught by a NYS Certified Special Education teacher, where children participate in a variety of educational, recreational, and therapeutic activities –an emphasis of the program is to reinforce academic concepts and to strengthen social skills.

Reflecting on the positive influence that HLVS has had on the lives of members of the disabled community, Senator Brooks stated, “I am so proud to deliver this funding award to The Hagedorn Little Village School so they can continue to deliver exceptional programs to support their students’ development. With this award, I also pay tribute to the hard work undertaken by HLVS executives and staff, and for their determination to delivering disability services for our Long Island community.”

Acknowledging the immediate impact that this funding award will have on HLVS, Executive Director Dr. Jon Feingold stated, “The students and families of The Hagedorn Little Village School, Jack Joel Center for Special Children are grateful for all of the support that Senator Brooks provides us and the rest of the special needs communities! The current funding that the Senator has allocated to us will help to offset the expense of providing the specialized instruction and equipment that our students require in our CARP program.”

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible.

The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. Seaford Top Pair Place High Value On Education

From a young age, getting into a good college was a goal for Seaford High School seniors Paige Burch and Myles Schnaier. That drive to succeed earned them the top rankings in the Class of 2023, Principal Nicole Schnabel announced.

Paige, with a weighted grade point average of 106.64, is the valedictorian. Myles earned salutatorian honors with a GPA of 105.80. Although college decisions are a few months away for them, they know they have a lot of options.

Paige plans to select a school where she can major in biochemistry, with a goal of working in the scientific research field, and Myles is looking to study biology on a premedicine track.

At Seaford High School, both students took advantage of the academic, athletic and extracurricular offerings. By the time she graduates, Paige will have taken 15 Advanced Placement courses. She is also on track to earn an AP Capstone Diploma and is pursuing the Seal of Biliteracy. Her favorite courses have included Statistics, AP Research and Science Research. This

year’s science research topic is the impact of parabens on aquatic life, while last year she studied valley fever and how the fungal disease is affected by the environment and climate change.

Myles completed seven AP courses by the end of his junior year, with another seven in his senior schedule. Classes he enjoyed included AP Biology, AP European History and pre-calculus. He plays trumpet in the high school band, is a member of Books and Bagels, the National Honor Society and varsity soccer team, and played junior varsity baseball and soccer. Community service is important to Myles and he volunteers with the Book Fairies, an organization that distributes new and gently used books to underresourced communities on Long Island.

Paige plays field hockey, is general chair for Model Congress, president of Books and Bagels and historian for the National Art Honor Society. She also is a member of Key Club and the National Honor Society, and is active in the Girl Scouts.

This year’s top two

students represent both of Seaford’s elementary schools, as Paige attended Manor and Myles got his start at Harbor.

“It’s just a great honor for me,” Myles said of being named salutatorian. “I’m definitely humbled by it and it’s something I’ll be proud of for the rest of my life. I’ve always taken my education seriously. I know that what I do now is going to pay off in the future.”

Myles said that while he has always studied hard and attended many extra help sessions, he credits this achievement to his teachers, who are extremely helpful and invested in the success of their students.

In addition to her teachers, Paige credits her parents for always inspiring her to do her best and to the valedictorians in the classes before her, who she always looked up to as academic role models. It’s a great feeling, she said, to reach the same milestone.

“I was very surprised,” she said of the announcement of this honor, “but it was a great moment because it really shows that hard work pays off.”
