eaford Manor Elementary School classes took turns venturing out to the front lawn of the school to pick and purchase pumpkins, mums and gourds. Each year, the Manor fifth grade class parents coordinate the sale to offset the cost of certain fifth grade activities, such as the yearbook and bagel breakfast, a roller skating party and a gingerbread house activity. Thanks to all those who participated in this fun event.
Long Island Children’s Museum invites families from across the region to celebrate Diwali, India’s “Festival of Lights,” on Sunday, October 23rd, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors will have the chance to get an early start on their holiday activities or discover the traditions practiced by families around the world to welcome a new year. The event is made possible with the support of New York Council for the Humanities. The Tech Advantage There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.
For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest
the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

Diwali is a harvest holiday, that includes family gatherings, decorating the home, expressing gratitude, lighting lamps and exchanging gifts; traditions that many visitors will connect with. Diwali activities at LICM will include: Dance Performances and Workshops: Indian dancer, Abha Roy, will lead troupe members from the Srijan Dance Center as they perform and teach classical and folk dances representing the North, East, South, and West regions of India. Costume Collection: Clothing from different parts of India (including Rajasthan, Bengal, Kashmir, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu) will be on display. Others will be available for children to try on. Traditional Crafts: Children will create torans, the traditional household decoration used as a symbol of welcome, design rangolis, the colorful designs traditionally created with rice flour and paint wooden spoons, representing the first day tradition of shopping for new household utensils

Santino yesterday hosted the Town of Hempstead’s first Italian Heritage Celebration, recognizing outstanding men and women who have dedicated their lives to promoting the great Italian traditions and culture that have helped make our township such a great place in which to live, work and raise a family. “The Town of Hempstead has among the highest populations of ItalianAmericans in the United States,” stated Santino. “From literature, sports, religion, education and medicine to the arts, government, cuisine, business and more, ItalianAmericans have been at the forefront of creating and maintaining our national identity. I am proud to honor several men and women this evening who embody the spirit and dedication of Italian
heritage here in America’s largest township.” This year’s honorees were: Michael Gagliardi, ExChief of the Island Park Fire Department and community volunteer; Rosario and Salvatore Fuschetto, owners of King Umberto Ristorante in Elmont; Dr. Salvatore LaGumina, Director of Italian American Studies at Nassau Community College; Anthony Ponte, President of Atlantic Beach Estates; Carmine Soldano, Past President of the Columbia Police Association and community volunteer; and Tom Valenti, owner of Piccolo’s Ristorante in Bellmore. “I am proud of my Italian heritage and our township’s officials are excited to be celebrating the many accomplishments of those who trace their heritage to Italy,” said Santino. “The story of Italian immigrants
is the story of the United States, a nation built upon the successes of people who have come to our nation, settled and worked to build a beautiful and strong United States of America.” Inspiring Italian-American themed keynote speeches were offered by Dr. LaGumina, an author of books on the Italian American experience, and Michael Bonacasa, President of Italian-Americans in Government.
