2022 Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival At Hempstead Lake State Park

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit are pleased to announce the Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival will be held at Hempstead Lake

State Park, on Saturday, October 15, from 10:00AM – 4:00PM

The fishing license requirement for all anglers over the age of 16 is suspended for this festival and admission and parking are free. Festival activities include fishing instruction, casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish cleaning services to all participants.

A “Casting for Pumpkins” event for children will be provided by the Seaford Knights of Columbus. Activities are provided by I FISH NY and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Seaford Seniors Awarded By College Board

The College Board has honored two Seaford High School seniors for their academic success as part of its national recognition programs.

Ryan Baldwin received the National African American Recognition Award and Kaitlin Davis earned the National Hispanic Recognition Award. The honors are based on their performance on eligible College Board exams including the PSAT and Advanced Placement tests.

During their time at Seaford High School, Ryan and Kaitlin have challenged themselves academically with rigorous courses schedules, taking numerous AP and collegelevel classes. Ryan is a

member of the football and wrestling teams, treasurer of student government and a member of Best Buddies and the Lighting Club. He also plays trombone in the band and is the low brass section leaders for the marching band. Kaitlin is treasurer of the Leo’s Club, a member of Best Buddies, Freshmen Mentors and the Key Club and is an avid dancer.

Both students make positive contributions in Seaford and beyond through community service. Ryan has taken part in local clean-up days and Kaitlin helped deliver food to needy families for Thanksgiving.

To be considered for a recognition award, students must have a

grade point average of 3.5 or higher, must identify as African American, Hispanic American, Indigenous, or attend high school in a rural area or small town, and must have taken the PSAT 10, the PSAT/NMSQT or at least two distinct AP exams before their junior year.

“It feels nice to receive this award,” said Ryan, who is considering studying engineering when he goes to college next year. “It shows that I’ve been working hard in my time at Seaford High School.”

Kaitlin, an aspiring elementary school teacher, added, “It feels good to be recognized for my accomplishments.”

Douglas Elliman Long Island Makes A Large Impact

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

Every summer, HKS hosts Camp Helen Keller, a program for children who are blind, have low vision are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss. The camp seeks to improve participants’ self-esteem, selfconfidence and socialization skills. It’s held at the LIU Post campus in Brookville and admits campers from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, who attend free of charge and receive door-to-door transportation, also free of charge.

“Everyone here is the same,” says Ellie Gallagher, a 10-year-old camper from Freeport, NY. “Here we all have some kind of visual disability, so no one feels different. And it’s a lot of fun.” Campers participate in traditional activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, as well as field trips and technology

classes that have been adapted for individuals with low vision.

Every year, the camp organizes a show on the last day of the one-month program to celebrate the campers’ achievements, show parents and friends what campers have been doing and to say goodbye to old and new friends. This year, show-stopping performances included dance routines to favorite songs including “Rainbow Connection” “The Theme From Cheers” and singing performances by select campers.

“It’s such a confidence boost for her,” says Ellie’s mom, Jennifer. “She looks forward to seeing the same friends every year. The activities she experiences lets her know she’s just like every other kid and can do just about anything.”

Additionally, October is month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways, including World Sight Day on October 14, White Cane Day on October 15 and the entire month designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. It’s important to accept people of all abilities, from all walks of life, and this nonprofit does just that.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Historic Hudson Valley recently announced the return of The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, a 28-day immersive, family friendly Halloween experience, set on Long Island’s historic 19th century village at the beloved Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Historic Hudson Valley, which develops and produces the event, is a not-for-profit education organization that owns and operates National Historic Landmarks in New York’s Sleepy Hollow region. Senator Brooks’ Funding Grant To Provide 28,000 Meals To Long Island Homeless Community

Senator John E. Brooks (SD-8) was proud to present a funding grant of $25,000 to Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank to help support their Hope for the Homeless program.

Since its creation in 1980 by the late Harry Chapin, Long Island Cares had been on a mission to feed Long Island’s community and to stamp out the root causes of hunger. Their Hope for the Homeless program currently provides mobile outreach, including emergency food, supplies, and linkages to other resources, to approximately 800 homeless individuals –many of them veterans – on a monthly basis. In August 2022 alone, the Hope for the Homeless program distributed nearly

1,000 meals throughout Nassau and Suffolk. When able, the organization also assists community members with securing housing or by providing housing referrals.

Having been involved with Long Island Cares since they were first established, Senator Brooks stated, “We are exceptionally fortunate that we have an agency like Long Island Cares that is able to reach those most in need, and that is so in tune with the needs of the most vulnerable members of our community, including our pets. I have seen the work they do — how many people they are actually able to help — and I have been to many of their facilities and have worked in their warehouse to

get items ready. I know the needs on Long Island are very high, so I just think it is a wonderful organization. I have seen firsthand the good work they do here, so I am very proud that I was able to secure this funding grant for them – anything I can do to help, I will do.”

Because of the funding grant that Senator Brooks was able to secure, Long Island Cares will be able to provide 33,750 pounds of food, or 28,000 meals, to be distributed throughout the Long Island Community.

Supervisor Saladino also announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will continue its efforts in helping the restaurant

industry get back on its feet by expanding outdoor dining through 2023. This expanded outdoor dining initiative will greatly assist the food service industry at a time in which they need it the most. A recent study indicated that 51 percent of adults have said they are not dining out at restaurants as often as they would like, an increase of six percentage points from before the pandemic.

“We have worked tirelessly since this

pandemic began to help location businesses come back safely and efficiently,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We cut the red tape, permitted for new outdoor options for restaurant patrons and helped restaurant owners reopen safely and successfully. We are pleased to continue with that effort, and will invite restaurants to extend their outdoor dining services through 2021. This way, restaurant owners will be able to use all of the investments

Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Sought 4-Session Training In November

Breast cancer survivors can help others coping with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The four-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays in November (November 1, 8, 15 and 22) from 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. Attendance at all four sessions is necessary.

This in-depth training

includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Those who complete the training will have opportunities to provide support and guidance on the hotline; attend community outreach events to support underserved communities; deliver educational

presentations and speaking engagements; assist with local and national press and media; and help with fundraising efforts.
