It was in the fall of 2017 when the class first came together, as students from Manor and Harbor elementary schools united as sixth graders. Umika, a Manor graduate, and Angelina, who attended Harbor, began sitting together at lunch as their friend groups merged. Their friendship blossomed and grew stronger in 10th grade when they had just about every class together, and they became each other’s biggest supporters.

Umika was named valedictorian with a weighted grade point average of 104.653. She was told during her senior meeting with her guidance counselor and her parents.

“It was very shocking, but exciting,” she said. “This is something I’ve always dreamed of getting. It means a lot to me because it shows how hard I’ve worked and how hard my family has worked to push me.”

Angelina, whose GPA of 104.557 earned her the second ranking, found out during her Spanish class –while Umika’s meeting was going on – with Principal Nicole Schnabel recording the moment. The entire Spanish class then went to the guidance office, where Umika and Angelina could share in their accomplishment together.

“It honestly felt surreal, like a dream,” Angelina said. “It’s such an important

valedictorian Umika Hathiramani, left, and salutatorian Angelina Belgiorno are the top two graduates of Seaford High School’s Class of 2024. Photo courtesy of the Seaford School District

recognition of all the work that I’ve put in.”

The pair have taken numerous college-level courses over their high school careers, including Advanced Placement Research which will earn them the AP Capstone diploma. They have also been actively involved in student life. Umika is president of the Library Advisory Committee and Books and Bagels, and a member of the National Honor Society, Freshmen Mentors, Leos Club and the stage crew. Outside of school, she volunteers with Children’s Hope of India and teaches classes at the Seaford Public Library about Diwali. Umika is active in the Girl Scouts, having earned her Bronze and Silver awards and is in pursuit of the Gold Award. She also has done a social media management internship for My Fancy Flamingo and a marketing internship with BrightPoint InfoTech.

Angelina plays the flute in the marching band, is a member of Freshmen Mentors, the Mural Club, the Science Club and stage crew, and is social media manager for Student Alliance. She

is a manager of research for an environmental science magazine, “The Young Environmentalists,” and had a fellowship at Columbia University’s Journal of Science, Tech, Ethics and Policy.

While the pair are early in the college decision process, both have ambitious goals for the future. Umika is looking to study both business and environmental science, and hopes to pursue a career in a field that combines marketing and sustainability. Angelina is interested in public health and is hoping to attend medical school.

They credit their success to great teachers and supportive friends, as well as a rich academic program.

“Seaford High School has definitely given me so many opportunities in so many different types of areas,”

said. “Those opportunities allowed me to grow and experience different things to see what I like.”

Added Angelina, “I really love the community at Seaford High School. It’s a very welcoming place and the teachers here are so amazing. There’s so many opportunities to get involved.”

Town Seeks Volunteers To Assist In Shell Recycling At Oyster Festival

Oyster Bay Town

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invite residents looking to help the environment and preserve our waterways to take part in the Town’s shell recycling initiative at the upcoming Oyster Festival, taking place Saturday and Sunday, October 14th and 15th in Oyster Bay.

“We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to be a vital part of our environmental mission to help protect our harbor and improve our waterways,” explained Supervisor Saladino. “As a Shell Collection Station Attendant, volunteers will contribute their time to help divert oyster and clam shells from landfills, which will instead be recycled and used for habitat restoration and growing new oysters.”

Volunteers at this year’s

festival will be asked to commit to working in three-hour shifts. Available time slots will be from 10am through 7pm on both Saturday, October 14th and Sunday, October 15th. Responsibilities will include identifying oyster and clam shells, overseeing a shell collection station with separate bins for general trash and for shells, guiding festival goers in correctly sorting their waste, and answering questions about the shell recycling program and educating attendees about its environmental benefits. Those interested in participating will be asked to participate in a zoom session to become familiar with the program and will receive a t-shirt, as well as community service hours for their participation.

“This wonderful initiative helps us restore the populations in our

harbor while improving water quality,” said Councilwoman Walsh.

“After the festival, the shells are transported by Town aqua-culturists to a curing facility, where they remain for several months prior to being strategically returned to the harbor to assist in the growth of new shellfish. This great program not only helps ensure the shells don’t go to waste, they provide an excellent source of habitat for young shellfish to grow and mature, offering protection from weather conditions and predators.”

Anyone interested in volunteering for the shellfish recycling program can contact the Department of Environmental Resources at (516) 677-5943 or by emailing Environmental @oysterbay-ny.gov. For

more information about the program, visit www. oysterbaytown.com/ shellrecycling.

Receiver Pravato Mails 2023-2024 School Tax Bills

Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes, Jeffrey Pravato, reminds residents that the First Half of the 2023-2024 School Tax Levy was due on October 1st, but can be paid without penalty through November 13th

The Town of Oyster Bay is closed on November 10th in observance of Veteran’s Day.

“New York State Law allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Receiver Pravato explained.

“After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty is added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to October 1st. Don’t delay, make your payment before November 13th and ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.”

The Tax Office is open in both Town Hall North, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, daily from

9:00 am to 4:45 pm to assist residents and accept payments with a check, cash or credit card (for a fee). Outdoor walkup windows are also available. On November 9th and 13th both offices will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill.

Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Please be certain to sign your check, and make it payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s school district code, section, block, lot and phone number on the check. All mailed payments must have a United States Postal Service postmark dated on or before November 13th.

Taxpayers also have access to the 2023-2024 School Tax information on our online system via a link on the Town website, www.oysterbaytown.com.

Residents may view current tax bills, print out a hard copy, or pay taxes with an ACH check payment for a service fee of $1.75, or by credit card for a much higher fee charged by the credit card companies. The Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of this fee.

Receiver Pravato reminds residents that school budgets are set by their local school districts, and the Town of Oyster Bay is not involved in that process. Any questions related to School Tax rates and amounts should be

addressed to the resident’s school district. The telephone number for each school district is printed on the front of the School Tax bill.

When calling the Tax Office at (516) 624-6400, or sending an email to receiveroftaxes@oysterbayny.gov, residents are requested to have the school district code, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

Northwell Health IRONMAN 70.3 New York - Jones Beach Triathlon

Long Island’s south shore played host to the inaugural edition of Northwell Health IRONMAN® 70.3® New York – Jones Beach

triathlon on Saturday, Sept. 23. Participating athletes were treated to an IRONMAN 70.3 journey highlighted by the world-famous Jones

Beach State Park, home of 6.5 miles of beautiful white-sand beach on the Atlantic Ocean. In the age group men’s race, Ross Baldwin (Brooklyn, N.Y.),

in the 35-39 age group, was the first to cross the line with a time of 3:40:47. Evelyne Papillon (Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada), finished first

in the 40-44 age group, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:32:44.

More than 2,300 athletes from 46 U.S. States and 43 countries, regions and territories travelled to Long Island to compete in the inaugural race that began with a shortened 750-meter swim in Zach’s Bay just outside the famous Jones Beach Amphitheater before embarking upon the 56-mile closed bike course on the flat and fast Wantagh Parkway. The 13.1-mile run course took athletes onto the boardwalk alongside the Atlantic Ocean with an unforgettable finish line on the beach.

Due to the weather conditions on race morning, IRONMAN and local officials made the decision in the interest of athlete safety and the strict benchmarks in place, the swim portion of IRONMAN 70.3 New York

triathlon shortened to a 750-meter (0.46 mile) swim.

The Northwell Health IRONMAN 70.3 New York – Jones Beach will return to Long Island’s South Shore on Sept. 28, 2024. General registration for the 2024 edition will open on Oct. 4, 2023.

Protectors Of Safety Take An Oath

“We are the change” is this year’s theme for the Seaford Harbor Elementary School Safety Patrol, a group of 14 students who strive to keep their classmates safe. An installation ceremony was held on Sept. 22, with parents, classmates and elected officials in attendance.

The school had a Safety Patrol in the 1960s and Assistant Principal Caroline Stringer shared a photo of the original members at this year’s ceremony. Although it disbanded for several years, Safety Patrol was reinstituted in 2021 and this was the third group of

students to be installed in its modern era.

School Safety Patrol, founded in 1920, is sponsored by AAA and approximately 650,000 students participate from 34,000 schools. At Seaford Harbor, interested fifth graders went through an application process and were chosen for demonstrating the seven qualities of a good patroller – dependable, polite and courteous, a good role model, trustworthy, respectful, proud and diligent.

Students received their bright green sashes, along with badges and pins, from AAA Northeast

Girl Scouts Serve Up ‘Magic’

representative Geraldine DiSalvo and Principal Jennifer Bisulca. They then recited the Safety Patrol pledge to make it official.

Safety Patrol members will have assigned posts around the school during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. They will help enforce safety rules and guide students to their destinations. Each student will also have an opportunity to serve as a sergeant, lieutenant and captain this year. Ms. Stringer said the Safety Patrol’s first few meetings of the year have focused on how they can be good leaders in school and in their community.

In This Year’s Mags&Munchies Fall Products Program

Mags&Munchies Helps Girl Scouts Become Entrepreneurs While Giving Back To Their Communities

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) are set to spotlight their eagerly anticipated –Mags&Munchies Fall Product Program, running through November 5 . As the leaves change, the “Own Your Magic” theme lights the way for Girl Scouts to ignite their entrepreneurial spirits, learn valuable skills and make a lasting impact on their communities.

Randell Bynum, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Nassau County, emphasizes the program’s significance, “Mags&Munchies empowers our Girl Scouts to shine brightly as they contribute to their communities, earn troop rewards and hone vital business and leadership skills. By participating in in-person and online sales, they will embrace the core tenets of entrepreneurial leadership, while helping fund their troop activities.”

The Mags&Munchies program offers an exciting journey for girls of all ages. Through in-person and online sales, Girl Scouts will harness the power of entrepreneurship by practicing the five key leadership lessons, including goal setting, decision making, people skills, money management and business ethics.

New to this year’s program are two enticing snack mixes. The Thai chili mix boasts a perfect blend of flavors, including sweet Thai chili almonds, rice crackers, wasabi peas, sesame sticks, garlic bread sticks and siracha corn nuggets. The cheddar caramel crunch mix, presents a sweet and salty mix of cheese crackers, cheese corn sticks, mini pretzels and caramel cheddar corn puffs.

Each Girl Scout can craft a personalized avatar and record a sales pitch, inviting friends and family to explore and purchase

from their digital store, while teaching Girl Scouts about e-commerce. Customers can also subscribe to hundreds of magazines or renew current subscriptions to benefit their favorite Girl Scout and her troop. Continuing their commitment to help others, Mags&Munchies’ Operation: Stop Hunger on Long Island community share program allows Girl Scouts and their customers support Island Harvest’s mission to end hunger on Long Island. When making their Mags&Munchies purchase, customers can also choose to contribute to “Care to Share,” sending nuts and snacks to local food pantries through Island Harvest. For more information about Girl Scouts of Nassau County and the many events they hold throughout the year, visit gsnc.org.
