The new hospital will feature private familycentric rooms; separate pediatric inpatient areas for oncology, adolescent and intensive care; the general pediatrics unit; a pediatric procedure suite; patient playrooms and a family lounge.

Additionally, the expanded facility is expected to help recruit and retain the best pediatric doctors in the country and expand the research frontier toward developing groundbreaking therapies for the cure of childhood disease and disability.

and research translation (MART) building and the new Hospital Pavilion. The combined $425M project is the largest capital construction project within the State University of New York (SUNY) system in the past two decades.

President Stanley also announced that the new Children’s Hospital has now received nearly $20 million in philanthropic contributions from hundreds of community members and businesses.

This total includes a $9 million matching challenge grant from an anonymous donor, which was met recently when the Knapp Swezey Foundation pledged $2.7 million toward Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

“Today is a celebration for the children – the past, present and future patients of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital,” Dr. Stanley said.

“Stony Brook Children’s ensures that Long Island’s 400,000 children and their families have access to state-of-the-art pediatric services close to home.”

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is the only dedicated children’s hospital located in the 100 miles between the Nassau/Queens border and Montauk, and the only children’s hospital on Long Island associated with a medical research institution.

The Hospital Pavilion and the MART will bring some 4,200 project-related and specialized research jobs to the region.

For the fourth consecutive year Good Samaritan Hospital, in collaboration with the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a field of pink flags, displayed on the hospital’s front lawn, honoring cancer patients.

Supporters gathered to pay tribute to all those affected by the disease.

Hospital administration, elected officials, members of the West Islip Fire Department and Coalition were on hand to lend their support. Members of the

West Islip High School’s vocal ensemble Vocal Motion, performed an inspirational song as part of the moving ceremony.

This year marked 20 years since Good Samaritan opened its Breast Health Center created in partnership with the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition to improve the region’s efforts at early detection of breast cancer.

The Center’s multidisciplinary team includes radiologists dedicated exclusively to state-of-the-art breast imaging, who conference

weekly with pathologists, breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and a team of genetic counselors.

The clinical team discusses each case in detail to allow for broad consensus.

Oncology nurses and nurse navigators, trained to guide patients through the complex decision-making process that confronts them, round out the team.

Farewell To A Legend By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I first became a Yankees fan back in the fall of 1995, as the team made its first run at the postseason since 1981, with the legendary Don Mattingly at its helm. For the first time in my lifetime, I understood the magnitude of this storied organization. And then, just like that, the run was over.

Mattingly walked off into the sunset, having never made it to a World Series. The end of an era.

But there, waiting in the wings, was a rookie shortstop, destined to pick up the torch and run with it. And run he did, for the next 20 seasons, leading the Yankees to five World Championships

and racking up countless milestones along the way.

Derek Jeter exemplified what it meant to be a true Yankee in an era when there were very few, if any, athletes doing things the “right” way, never mind in a city as unforgiving as New York.

Much has been said, and written, over these last several weeks – really, throughout the past year, since Jeter announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2014 season – analyzing the legacy of the player, the upbringing of the man, his place in Yankees, and baseball, lore.

To that, I can only add the following: while he may never have been the “best” in any one statistical category, as

relentlessly pointed out by rival fans and the national media, he was undeniably in a class by himself in the only categories that counted – dignity, sportsmanship, integrity… and, oh yeah, he had quite the knack for coming through in the clutch, when the stakes were the highest, the pressure the greatest. Not bad for an “overrated” player, right?

Yankees fan or not, these last several weeks have been quite the emotional rollercoaster. An historic era in Yankees history has come to a close, the only one my generation has had the privilege to witness.

And what a privilege it was.

Long Island Heart Walk

Movement Speaks Studio of Dance recently opened its doors in Babylon Village, at 225 Deer Park Avenue.

After having danced for 27 years and taught for nearly 15 of those years, partners Aileen Smisek and Megan Connell decided to take the leap and open a dance studio of their own.

Movement Speaks offers classes for children from ages 18 months through adult levels. Now in its 21st year, Island Harvest Food Bank’s annual Taste of the Harvest Celebration remains the organization’s premier fundraiser to help provide critical food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders struggling with hunger every day. This year’s gala will be held on Tuesday, October 21st, at 6 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York, and will recognize three outstanding individuals for their commitment to helping end hunger and reducing food waste on Long Island.

Not your typical fundraising dinner, the Taste of the Harvest Celebration brings together Long Island’s leading restaurants, caterers, country clubs and other fine food establishments to offer guests a sumptuous sampling of gourmet

food and desserts. Other highlights of the evening include a silent auction offering a variety of lavish prizes to suit everyone’s taste.

The Taste of the Harvest Celebration will also be the occasion to honor three exceptional Long Islanders for their ongoing support of Island Harvest and its mission.

A champion on and off the field, John Schmitt played center for the NY Jets and was part of their thrilling Super Bowl III victory. Now the former center and Hofstra University alumnus vigorously champions hunger-relief efforts and the good work of Island Harvest.

were crowned. Members of the homecoming court included Paul An, Michael Brown, James Daly, Brianne Giuliano, Jacqueline Mass, Kelsey McCarthy, Michael Papach and Alexandra Vanderka.

A stellar performance by the marching band, under the direction of Joseph Romano, entertained the community during halftime.

There were also performances by the award-winning cheerleaders, color guard and dance team.

Commitment To Community In observance of Patriot Day, Lee Road Elementary School students pledged to engage in community service during the 20142015 school year.

Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11th to remember those who were injured or killed during the terrorist attacks

on the World Trade Center in New York City.

Country Fair Makes History Colonial era Rock Hall Museum lends an historic flavor to a modern day celebration during the Annual Country Fair on Saturday and Sunday, October 25th and 26th.

Supervisor Kate Murray invites visitors to enjoy a festive weekend of funfilled activities, including a harvest market, live concerts, scarecrow making, pumpkin patch, food court, pony rides, animal farm and a craft area for children.

“In addition to all the excitement of a traditional country fair, a visit to Rock Hall Museum provides a wonderful opportunity to relive the sights and sounds of Colonial era Hempstead Town,” commented Supervisor Murray. “Along with the many country fair events,

I invite you to tour the museum and experience an authentic 18th Century home and life-style.”

With FREE admission and FREE parking, the fair runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 25th and Sunday, October 26th.

The museum is located at 199 Broadway in Lawrence.

A busy weekend of Colonial era activities includes fascinating recreations of 18th Century cooking, games, music and craft making. There will also be regularly scheduled tours of the museum.

Featured entertainers at this year’s Country Fair include, Colonial Magician “Levram the Great” and country music group “Bob Stump and the Blue Mountain Band.”

The fair is also highlighted by a variety of children’s

activities including a colonial craft workshop (fee), a pumpkin patch, pony rides, scarecrow making (fee), games and contests.

The Country Fair is one of many popular events scheduled for Rock Hall in the months ahead.

SCOUTING’S HIGHEST HONOR - Hempstead Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad presented an official Town of Hempstead Certificate of Recognition to Austin Frank Johnson of Wantagh, who recently attained Scouting’s highest honor, the Eagle Scout Award, at his Eagle Court of Honor, which was held at Calvary Lutheran Church located on Taylor Avenue in East Meadow. Scout Master Mark Sullivan was also on hand to commend Eagle Scout Austin Johnston on a job well done.
