Free Admission & Skate Rental Day In Recognition Of National Bullying Prevention Month

In recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announce a “Put Bullying on Ice” Awareness Day. The event will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage on Saturday, October 7th from 2:45pm – 5:45pm during the public skate session. Free admission and skate rentals are offered for all students and families who reside in the Town of Oyster Bay. The concessionaire at the Ice Skating Center will

Exploring And Experimenting At Seaford Middle School

The science labs at Seaford Middle School are full of activity and inquiry, as students have been conducting various experiments to explore the world around them.

Seventh graders in Kevin Mullany’s science classes

were recently immersed in a “making rainbows” experiment. Students worked in teams and mixed blue, red and yellow liquids while recording their observations. When they were done, they had six beakers lined up from

red to purple. The young scientists had to be precise in their experiments to achieve the desired results and create a rainbow. Mr. Mullany said that the purpose of the lab was to introduce students to the metric system

and also to help them familiarize themselves with chemistry equipment, as many more experiments are on the horizon this year.

Eighth graders in Frank Maniscalco’s living environment class explored

the characteristics of life by studying slugs, seeing how they eat, move and adapt. Through their inquiry, they made comparisons to humans. The young scientists fed the slugs oatmeal to see them use their digestive systems,

gently touched them to see reflexes caused by the nervous systems and watched how they move because of their muscular systems.

Athletic field upgrades at Seaford High School were officially unveiled on Sept. 21 during an afternoon ribbon-cutting ceremony. It was a chance to thank the community for their investment to create a new multi-purpose field behind the school that can be used for numerous fall and spring sports, as well as physical education classes.

The crowd for the special event numbered in the hundreds, which included board of education trustees, administrators, teachers,

buildings and grounds staff, student-athletes, community members, elected officials, leaders of local service organizations, representatives of LandTek, which installed the field, and others who helped make the dream a reality.

As the crowd gathered, the Pep Band performed under the direction of Dr. Anthony Romeo. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, the Chorale sang the National Anthem, led by Yvonne Bendzlowicz. Retired teacher and varsity football

announcer Steve Bongiovi served as the master of ceremonies.

The new turf field, which replaced a grass field, spans from the back of the high school to the walkway that leads to the track and football field. A few finishing touches still need to take place, such as the installation of bleachers as well as dugouts for baseball and softball. But that hasn’t stopped the fall soccer and field hockey teams from using the field for practices and games.

approved construction of the field in a May 2022 Capital Reserve Fund vote. Work began in early 2023.

Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora said the idea began when the district received a grant from Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads, now a state senator. The idea went from adding dugouts to the existing baseball and softball diamonds, to a brand new multi-purpose field.

“This is not possible unless a whole community comes together,” Dr. Pecora said, adding that this

enhancement will benefit current and future Seaford students.

Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Kevin Witt said that this is the type of facility that Seaford athletes deserve. He noted that last year, the high school’s varsity teams captured a collective eight Nassau County championships, three Long Island championships and one state title.

“It’s a beautiful complex,” Mr. Witt said. “Enjoy it. We’re going to have it for a

very long time.”

Several athletes from teams that will use the new field also expressed their gratitude. There were also remarks from Sen. Rhoads, former State Sen. John Brooks and Town of Hempstead Councilman Chris Carini. The next enhancement to the athletic complex will be the addition of a comfort station, which will be largely funded from a grant from Sen. Brooks.

8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk To Support Overdose Prevention & Education And Addiction Treatment Services On Long Island

The John Brower, Jr. Foundation, in partnership with Outreach, hosted the 8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk on Saturday, September 9. The Walk was established by the Brower family (parents John, Sr. and Jody, and their children Kristen and Robert) in 2014 after they tragically lost their son John, Jr. to an opioid overdose in 2014. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the opioid epidemic and the support needed to fight the problem that continues to devastate families and communities

throughout Long Island. All funds raised support Outreach’s life-saving treatment programs and services for individuals and families. The Walk along the historic Jones Beach Boardwalk serves as an ongoing tribute to the memory of John Brower, Jr. and others who have been lost to the ongoing opioid crisis. It offers information to inspire and educate the public about substance and alcohol use disorders and the treatment options available to them and their loved ones.
