and music. Adventurous students can explore a variety of interests including television production, cooking and gymnastics. Ariana Fang of the Massapequa UFSD, who will become a sophomore this fall, said that the Regional Summer School program helped

serve nearly 20,000 students through 62 programs in 28 districts across Nassau County. In the past four years alone, enrollment has doubled. The largest and perhaps most essential component of RSS is credit recovery, helping students who are struggling with the state’s increasingly rigorous common core curriculum to make up what they were unable to complete during the school year. A key element of this is the intensive two-week Regent Review courses, which prepare students to retake the Regents exam in August and improve their scores. With recent changes to the Regents designed to better reflect the common core, more students than ever are retaking the exams.
This year more than 1,200 students are using RSS to prepare for the Common Core Algebra Regent Exam.

It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000. Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School. Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into
anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins. But for me, it is and always will be, home. The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed. Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the
festivities that come along with it as well – but the connection is not nearly as strong as the one forged in the district I called home for 13 years, 13 formative years of discovering my passions in life and gaining the confidence to pursue them. Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog, as they say in Lindy. And so I will continue to sit on those bleachers and smile, and remember all the good times. I will cheer on the home team, no matter if I recognize the faces, and find comfort in the unique bond that we all share. I will reflect upon those friendships forged and those many special moments enjoyed through the years. Go Bulldogs!

Earning a Spot Seaford High School sophomore Corey Marks is determined to be a doctor. That decision was solidified when he was anonymously nominated to participate in a three-day medical conference hosted by the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists, which took place in Boston, MA this past June. The prestigious academy handpicks 5,000 of the brightest high school minds from around the country and puts them before some of the brightest minds in
medicine. Numerous Nobel Laureates and medical pioneers discussed their research and leadership in cutting-edge areas such as face transplantation and developing food sources that could feed the world. The medical professionals then called upon the high school students to take their research to the “next level.” Corey said the conference was “life-changing. I left feeling motivated and confident about what I want to do with my life.”

On Tuesday evening, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center hosted a fundraiser for its Children’s Center at Nassau County Family Court. The event was held at Tesoro’s Ristorante, located at 967 Old Country Road in Westbury, and featured Long Island singing sensation and recent television personality, Sal “The Voice” Valentinetti. Sal entertained the crowd with a selection of covers from the likes of the Rat Pack and Bobby Darin and was met with an enthusiastic reception.
More than 60 guests came out to support the Children’s Center, and raised in excess of $13,000. The Children’s Center provides care and early learning to almost 2,000 children annually, ages 6 weeks-12 years, while their parents or guardians are in court. Executive Director Andrew Malekoff spoke about the positive impact of the Children’s Center in the community, and added “State funding cuts have caused similar facilities across the state to close, but thanks to the generous support of our donors, the
Children’s Center at Nassau Family Court remains open and providing services full-time.” Mr. Malekoff introduced Dr. Nellie Taylor-Walthrust, Director of The Leeds Place (under which the Children’s Center operates), who referenced the Center’s focus on early childhood education, stating that the Center prides itself on introducing children to early learning through play. The fundraiser was co-chaired by Robert C. Mangi, Esq. and John M. Zenir, Esq., P.C. and was
