Volunteers Needed For Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup Fun Environmental Initiative Features

Scavenger Hunt For Kids

Great Volunteer Opportunity For Students

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman

Steve Labriola invite residents to participate in an Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, September 30th at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay near the gazebo. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Bay, this event offers volunteers – individuals, families, companies and organizations – an opportunity to give back to the environment by removing litter and debris from the shoreline. Certificates are available upon request for students seeking to fulfill volunteer requirements.

“This is a great opportunity to roll up your sleeves, giveback to Mother Earth, and have fun while learning

more about our local marine life and environment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “I hope to see you at the Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup.”

Volunteers are invited to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 9am to 12pm. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo off of Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay. Additional cleanup locations include Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville, however, all volunteers should check in at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park. Typically, in year’s past, harbor and beach cleanup events have resulted in 40,000lbs of debris being collected by volunteers and

town workers.

Councilman Labriola stated, “Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Allowing this litter to remain on our shorelines will only lead to increasingly worse damage for the environment. We thank you in advance for participating in this event.”

Individuals and groups who are interested in registering for this environmental cleanup should contact the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at (516) 677-5943 or visit www.oysterbaytown.com/ volunteer

Smiles And Salutations On Seaford’s First Day

The energy level was high as the new school year began in Seaford on Sept. 5, with more than 2,000 students and hundreds of staff members passing through the doors of the district’s four schools.

Seaford Harbor Elementary School students got to meet their new principal, Jennifer Bisulca. Perhaps known to their older siblings, Ms. Bisulca took on the role after serving as assistant principal at the middle school. She greeted students and parents at morning arrival and visited

classrooms throughout the day.

In kindergarten classrooms, Seaford’s newest students learned about different routines, such as where to put their backpacks and lunch boxes, and how to line up when they leave the room. There were also plenty of introductory activities for the children, who will be together until their graduation in June of 2036.

At Seaford High School, it was the Class of 2024 that marked its last first day of school. They wore their senior shirts and used

Seaford Public Library

a photo station outside to document the occasion.

At the end of the day, they lined up in the courtyard to form a “24” for the senior yearbook photo.

Incoming ninth graders spent the day getting acclimated to their new surroundings. In earth science, they took part in a getting-to-know-you bingo game while in English, they wrote letters about their first-day feelings, which they will get back at the end of the year. The goal was to show them how to capture a moment of their lives in words.

From end to end, the front lawn of Seaford High School was filled on the evening of Sept. 11 for the 22nd annual Memorial Candle Lighting Ceremony to honor the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The ceremony was hosted by the Seaford 9/11 Memorial Committee in partnership with the school district.

An expansive field of American flags transitioned to the Seaford High School band and dozens of firefighters from Seaford, Wantagh and Freeport. Families of the five Seaford High School graduates who died in the attacks –Timothy Haskell, Thomas

Community Commemorates 9/11

Haskell, John Perry, Robert Sliwak and Michael Wittenstein – lined the long, rounded concrete bench at the foot of the memorial plaza. Hundreds of chairs were occupied by the Seaford Board of Education, administrators, teachers, clergy members, elected officials, leaders of community organizations, alumni and local residents.

The main walkway featured the Nassau County Police Pipe and Drum band, and the next section of grass was filled with students in their Seaford jerseys, youth sports attire or scouting uniforms. With more than 1,000 people in attendance, Seaford has

continued to host one of the biggest 9/11 memorial ceremonies on Long Island each year.

Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora led the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Seaford band students played the National Anthem.

“This remembrance ceremony epitomizes Seaford pride,” Dr. Pecora said.

Former Congressman Peter King, who still calls Seaford his home, expressed his gratitude that the community has continued to show up in great numbers to honor those whose lives were lost on 9/11. He called on all Americans to recommit

themselves to the unity and patriotic spirit that was so strong in the aftermath of the attacks.

Seaford High School student council co-adviser Shari Raduazzo spoke about the Patriot Award, which has been presented to 112 Seaford High School graduates since 2002, for demonstrating service, character and commitment. She, along with past recipients Jillian Padavan (2018) and Gianna Cesario (2021), presented Dr. Pecora with a $2,000 donation for the Seaford High School Class of 2024 to visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City. They

also gave her hundreds of community service pledges from students, staff and community residents.

Retired teacher and master of ceremonies Steve Bongiovi said that this year’s ceremony marked the 20th anniversary of the first candle lighting service in front of Seaford High School. The 9/11 memorial was dedicated in November 2002, and has been expanded since with artifacts from the World Trade Center and a survivor tree cutting.

Kenneth Haskell, president of the 9/11 Memorial Committee and brother of Thomas and Timothy, said that while

the service is a painful reminder of those they lost, it is an important way of keeping their memories alive.

“All of these people had a name, a story and somebody who loved them,” he said.

Members of the crowd lit their candles during a musical tribute by FDNY firefighter Jeremy Riddle and the Seaford High School Honors Chorale. Bells tolled for the five Seaford High School graduates, all 9/11 victims and other special intentions. The Pipe and Drum band played “Amazing Grace” and the ceremony concluded with the chorus singing “God Bless America.”

There may have been much excitement for the first day of the school year, but fourth graders at Seaford Manor Elementary School were even more hyped for their fourth day of class on Sept. 8.

Teacher Sarah Gerweck

Seaford Manor Fourth Graders Adore Day Four

said this is the first time the students have had a celebration for the day of school that matches their grade. Each fourth grade classroom was buzzing with energy and activities centered on the number 4, including a Connect Four tournament.

“It’s an excuse to have fun, but more importantly, it’s a great way for students to get to know their classmates better,” Ms. Gerweck said, noting that the different stations fostered socialization and friendship-building.

Students partnered up

and shared their answers for different task cards. They named four teachers they have had in the past, found words that rhyme with four, thought of four-syllable words and identified athletes that wear “4” on their jerseys. Students also drew shapes

with four angles and solved math problems with 4, 44 and 444.

The fourth day of school was also about setting the tone for the year. Teacher Amy Hechler said the goal is to promote a positive classroom environment from the first to the fourth

to the last day of school. Students made friendship bracelets with colorful beads and words that reflect their classroom culture, such as helpful, kindness, love and peace. Photos courtesy of the Seaford School District

of their day, many specialneeds individuals perform a range of tasks for not-forprofits that help to keep the doors open and the milk of

human kindness flowing.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps survey, volunteer participation was

at 23.2 percent, a drop of 7 percent between 2019 and 2021 – the largest decrease the survey has seen since its 2002 inception.

Special-needs individuals step in to do the most basic tasks to more intricate things such as data entry, interacting with donors and computer and office tasks.

“Our clients make the decision about which organizations they’d like to volunteer with,” says Christina Abbinanti of Life’s WORC in Garden City. She said that clients participate as part of the Program Without Walls that allows special-needs individuals to integrate into the community. The clients volunteer at a range of organizations throughout the week. “They also learn valuable job and interpersonal skills.”

“Volunteers are our life blood,” says co-founder Dean Riskin. “We have no paid staff. We have seventyfive-thousand ponytails we are sitting on that need to be sorted, weighed and bagged and we couldn’t do it without them.”

In addition to getting a warm feeling about helping, special-needs volunteers hone important work and

social skills that help them when they apply for jobs.

Receiver Pravato: 2023 General Tax Collection Is Closed

Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey P. Pravato wishes to notify town residents that the 2023 General Tax Collection Warrant has been closed, and all related records have been turned over to the Nassau County Treasurer. The original warrant specified that $590,878,211.73 was to be collected to support Nassau County, Town of Oyster Bay, and special tax districts. Assessment reductions and tax cancellations amounted to $544,450.51 (0.1%). Nassau County’s portion was $254,667,368.54 (43%). The Town of Oyster Bay’s portion was $114,021,966.45 (19%), and the special tax district’s portion was $211,605,218.73 (36%).

A list of unpaid properties was reported to the County Treasurer, amounting to $10,039,207.50 (1.7%).

Receiver Pravato stated, “Property owners with delinquent taxes will be contacted by the Nassau County Treasurer. The Treasurer’s office can be contacted at 1 West Street, Mineola, (516) 571-2090. Home owners with unpaid taxes will be receiving letters specifying taxes owed along with applicable penalties and late payment fees.”

Receiver Pravato added, “The 2023-2024 School Tax collection will begin October 1st, and the final day to pay the first half tax without penalty is November 10th. Residents can expect to receive a tax bill in the mail the first week in October. Tax amounts due will not be available until October 1st.” Residents with any questions may contact the Receiver’s Office at (516) 624-6400 or email receiveroftaxes@ oysterbay-ny.gov.
