Calling All Artists AARP Long Island has teamed with the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) and Bloomingdale’s Furniture Gallery in Roosevelt Field Mall to host the first-ever Art@50+ art exhibit. Entries are now open for aspiring Long Island artists 50 and older to submit their works for consideration. The exhibit, which will open at Bloomingdale’s on November 15, will showcase talented artists—from beginners
to experts—based on Long Island and 50 years of age or older. In celebration of National Family Caregivers Month in November, and in recognition of the contribution family caregivers make to their loved ones and their communities, the exhibit will feature a theme of caregiving. “Like art, caring for a loved one is a deeply personal experience,” said Bernard Macias, AARP Associate State Director
for Long Island. “We hope this exhibit serves as an opportunity for 50-plus Long Islanders to express those emotions on paper or canvas. We’re excited to see the results.” “Our partnership with Bloomingdale’s allows us to offer free gallery space to Long Island artists through exiting exhibits such as Art@50+. When AARP Long Island suggested this celebration of caregiving, we knew this exhibit would touch
a chord in all our hearts,” said LIAA Executive Director, Theresa StatzSmith. Each artist is permitted to submit up to 10 pieces of two-dimensional artwork - such as photographs, paintings and drawings - along with an artist biography and photo. The artwork can range from contemporary to abstract and black-and-white to color. All work must be framed and ready to hang securely on a wall and
though there are few size restrictions, no work can be larger than 10’ x 10’. The deadline for submissions is September 30th, 2017. The $25 application fee will be waived for AARP members. A panel of professional artists will review the applications and select the winners, who will then display the selected works in gallery. One winner will be featured as November’s “Artist of the Month” at artsaliveli.org. Winners, their families and their
guests will be invited to a free artists reception on November 15 at 6 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the exhibit, which will take place at Bloomingdale’s Furniture Gallery in the Roosevelt Field Mall at 630 Old Country Road in Garden City. Full of Life The hallways and classrooms of the Wantagh School District’s five buildings were full of activity again as the 20172018 school year began on September 5th. The 2,846 students, including approximately 180 new kindergartners, arrived on the first day ready to pursue knowledge and explore their interests. This year, they will be able to do that through enhanced academic offerings including an expanded elementary BIRCH LANE BEGINS -Pictured: Birch Lane kids waiting for their bus stop on the school STEAM program, first day of school 2017. Chromebooks for all
middle school students, new course offerings in technology, art and research at the high school, and a new music lab in the secondary complex. “I’m glad to be back. I missed my friends and my teachers,” said Wantagh Middle School seventhgrader Noah Adelsberg, who is looking forward to his honors math and science classes, and to improving his Spanish language skills. Eighth-grader Alexa Cardone said she wants to do well this year to set herself up for success in
high school. She is excited for her digital arts class and to participate on the cheerleading and lacrosse teams. “It is fantastic to see our halls come to life as the students returned to school,” said Superintendent John McNamara. “This promises to be an outstanding year for our students with new course offerings and updated facilities. I thank our entire staff for all of their preparation to make our opening days so successful for our students.”

There’s something about this time of year, even being 17-plus years removed from school, that still resonates with a certain degree of excitement. First days, new supplies in hand, a fashionable outfit all picked out the night before… just seeing snapshots of my friends’ children brings back a flood of memories from when I was a child, excitedly comparing schedules with my own classmates, mapping out what routes to take to class, planning who to eat lunch with the important things. How much has changed in the decades since. I know plenty of us would be thrilled to return to those simpler times, to when our biggest concern was having pool first period, or how to manage to squeeze in a stop at our lockers in between each class so as not to have to lug piles of books around the entire day. Even the workload seems trivial by comparison. We were competing for grades; but really, the entire structure was but a microcosm of the stresses of

daily “adult” life. It’s funny how we think we have it all figured out when we’re younger; no one can possibly offer us any insight that doesn’t match our own. We skate from one year to the next, until we eventually have to decide what to do with the rest of our lives. And even then, we have that cushion of college, the ultimate in years spent “finding” yourself. And really, all these years later, has any of us truly found what we thought we were looking for back then? I recall one teacher in high school who constantly warned us that, as many “friends” as we had collected through those formative years, there would come a day when less than a handful would remain. “Two, maybe three, tops,” he would say. “Just you wait and see.” Impossible, we all scoffed, as we remained confident that all those whom we spent the majority of classes and extracurricular activities with would always be by our side.

It wasn’t immediate. In fact, there were many friendships I maintained throughout college and even beyond. But, with each passing year, the list grew smaller. This is not to say that we would be incapable of picking up where we left off on any given day; but it’s not the same. Gone are the days of constantly talking on the phone, making plans to catch up, replaced instead by an occasional text message, a vague reference to “grabbing dinner” one of these days - and there it generally remains. If anything, this realization only confirms that I should have fully appreciated those school days as they were unfolding. How young and innocent we were, how little we knew of what was to come in the years that have since elapsed… how precious that time truly was. Here’s to all those students living those years as we speak. May they always appreciate them the way I have now learned to in hindsight.

final selections on hiring for paid internships. Parker’s President and CEO, Michael N. Rosenblut, commented on how impressed he was to meet such a talented and mature group of young adults, who truly were enthusiastic and engaging with the residents and patients, as well as with the team members. Parker hosted 130 interns and volunteers this summer. “The students had the opportunity to experience interning with professional staff in departments that included public affairs, finance, development, nutrition, social work, nursing, pharmacy, medicine, therapeutic recreation, physical and occupational therapy, etc. Some interacted with patients and residents, bringing joy and delight to their days,” Rosenblut said. Also, through the 1199SEIU Youth Mentoring Program, union member’s children can apply for paid internships through the 1199SEIU Child Care Fund. Through their program, 15 youth were volunteers at Parker this summer. He added that through their various partners, Parker has hundreds of interns as volunteers throughout the year. Parker was one of Ladders For Leaders first health care partners. Pratima Bhagwandin, Director of Volunteers, coordinates Parker’s Career Day and the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. The volunteers and interns attended these events in August. Darnel Rogers was sent
through the LFL program, a senior at SUNY Oneonta, graduating next May with a Bachelor Degree in Business Economics. Darnel sang songs for the seniors. Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon” and the Ink Blot’s “Set The World On Fire” are two examples. He interned in the Development Department on Parker’s Golf Classic, following up with sponsors and working on promoting the event. Darnel enjoyed Career Day because he spoke with Parker’s Finance team and learned how finance plays a large role in health care. He’s interested in a hospitality career, and hopes to run a hotel one day! Anandita Guha came to Parker through the Volunteer Department and volunteered with the Therapeutic Recreation Department. She spent time with the patients and residents, getting to know them, what activities they liked, talked with them, and most importantly listened to them. As an accomplished student of dance, she also performed “Bollywood Style” dancing for patients at Parker, which they really enjoyed! She is a student at Kew Forest High School in Kew Gardens, and plans to become an anesthesiologist. Joy Nath is a Bronx High School student and came to Parker through the 1199SIEU program. Through the 1199SIEU program, Joy received guidance with resume writing, cover letters, interview skills, etc.
He’ll include his stint in Parker’s gift shop on his resume. This recent high school graduate will attend The Macaulay Honors College at Lehman College in the Bronx, for a career in nursing. Parker was proud to help nurture the careers of these fine young people. These interns are carefully vetted. “All our applicants are evaluated based on their academic performance, responses to essay questions and résumé quality,” said Danielle DeAngelis, LMSW, Youth Employment Program Manager at Samuel Field and Central Queens YM & YWHA (her administrative staff finds internships and runs the program). “Ladders For Leaders helps high school and college students with paid internships, so they can get experience in different fields while earning money,” Danielle said. Selected applicants undertake 20-30 hours of pre-employment training to teach essential workplace readiness skills and professional etiquette. Participants then have an opportunity to interview for summer internships at many partners, such as Maimonides Medical Center, Morgan Stanley, New York Hospital Cornell, New York University Medical Center, Queens Chamber of Commerce and Parker Jewish Institute. Donation Drive In response to the urgent call for help, Westy Self Storage is hosting a donation drive to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Westy Self Storage in East Northport is a designated drop off location for donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide temporary storage for the donations and deliver them via Westy trucks to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will ensure delivery of the products to the areas in Texas most affected by the storm. Volunteers Assist Victims In the wake of the devastation that Hurricane Harvey inflicted upon the Houston area, the need for medical care has risen to crisis levels for those impacted by the flooding and who rely on their healthcare providers to manage existing chronic conditions. In response, Northwell Health has connected with its counterparts at the Houston–based MD Anderson Cancer Center to offer assistance to match the hospital‘s specific needs. Within 24 hours after requesting help from its clinicians, Northwell has enrolled more than 600 employees interested in volunteering. Beginning Monday, September 4th, the first Northwell team of 40 will be deployed to Houston. “Many of their [MD Anderson’s] employees are unable to commute to work because of the flooding,” said Michael J. Dowling, Northwell Health’s president and CEO. “Many others have been working non-stop for nearly a week to care for patients. Their staff requires relief so they can
attend to their personal needs in the aftermath of this devastating storm. They reached out to us because we are one of the largest cancer providers in New York and have, based on an assessment of needs, the skill level of employees who could help. We put a call out to Northwell Health team members with oncology credentials and to nurses system-wide. The response, as we expected, has been overwhelming.” Mr. Dowling explained that Northwell understands the need in Houston all too well. Its experience has included coordinated emergency response locally – for incidents such as Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene – and nationally through sending teams into affected areas such as New Orleans, following Hurricane Katrina. “We know the exhaustion factor, the physical and emotional toll these catastrophic events have on patients, caregivers, family members and the public at large. I thank those volunteers who have responded to this call to action, and every team
member who has expressed a desire to help those who are suffering.” Northwell is sending 120 clinicians in total, deploying teams of 40 (one team per week who will relieve the prior team) over a three week period. The situation will continue to be monitored and can be adjusted based on need and the fluidity of the situation. After explaining that she and a team of nurses would be deploying on Monday, Karen Gleason, RN, AVP, Cancer Service Line, Northwell Health said, “The nurses at Northwell are truly exceptional. Compassion is what we do…we take care of each other. It is an honor for us to be helping the staff at MD Anderson.” Given the storm’s impact on the ability to travel around the Houston area, the staffing challenges posed to area hospitals are significant. Volunteers included physicians, oncology nurses, technicians and personnel. Oldest Tree The oldest living tree, 4,700-year-old “Methuselah” grows in White Mountains, Calif.

Each year, Simon Youth Community Scholarships are awarded in every community across the country that is home to a Simon Mall, Mills, or Premium Outlets center. The application period has begun and ends on February 15th, 2018. Students can apply online by visiting syf.org/ scholarships. Any student who will be graduating in the class of 2018 and lives in the designated community surrounding a Simon property is eligible. Applicants can check their eligibility by entering their ZIP code at syf.org/ scholarships. Recipients will receive up to $1,500 toward tuition and other educational expenses at
an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school. The SYF community scholarship program is one facet of the Simon Supports Education initiative, launched earlier this spring at all Simon properties. As part of this initiative, visitors at Simon centers can now purchase SYF Simon VISA gift cards, redeemable wherever VISA is accepted. One dollar from the sale of each bright orange, SYF-branded card will go directly to support SYF and its mission. “The support of Simon and its generous shoppers has been instrumental in the growth and overall impact of Simon Youth Foundation,” said Dr. J. Michael Durnil, SYF President and CEO. “Providing this scholarship to deserving students in communities that Simon calls home is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for their continued support.” In addition to the community scholarships, 11 regional awards called “Awards of Excellence” will be given to top candidates. The regions eligible are Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Indianapolis, Miami, New York, Orange County (CA), Orlando, and Seattle/ Tacoma. Additionally, one Award of Excellence will be awarded to an applicant
from a Simon Premium Outlet. Students from these areas will have the opportunity to receive a $10,000 award ($2,500 for up to four years). In 2017, the Simon Youth Foundation awarded $1.6 million to 335 students nationwide. “The importance of pursuing education - both high school and beyond - cannot be overstated, and we feel passionately that financial constraints should never be the reason that a promising student is unable to achieve their dreams,” said Durnil. “We are proud to partner with Simon Long Island mall locations to help a Long Island-area student take their next steps in life.” The 2018 SYF Community Scholarship recipients will be selected by International Scholarship and Tuition Services, Inc. (ISTS), a third-party administrator. Students are selected based on a variety of criteria, including financial need, academic performance, leadership skills and participation in school and community activities. Those students who are the first in their family to pursue a post secondary education will also be given close consideration. Recipients will be notified of their awards in May 2018.

Regionals to be Held at Hofstra Following the largestever SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) is pleased to announce that the organization will now host two regional events in the 2017-2018 season. Planned as a double header, these backto-back regionals will be held April 9th to 11th and April 12th to 14th, 2018 at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Each event will serve as
a separate regional, with different teams competing in separate alliances and tournament rounds. Now in its 19th season, the SBPLI Long Island Regional features teams of high school-aged students from across Long Island, the New York metropolitan area and even around the world competing in a cooperative tournamentstyle robotics competition. Guided by their mentors, students rely on their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to compete
