Incoming sixth-grade students lined up in front of tables on Wantagh Middle School’s front lawn to receive their schedules during the school’s annual orientation and barbecue.

Most of the students were accompanied by parents, who were equally as eager to help their child learn how to open lockers, tour the facility and take care of last-minute business.

And so it begins. That slow, tedious transition into all things Autumn.

That gradual acceptance of pumpkin spice and flowering mums and long sleeves and boots, and the reluctant closing of pools and packing away of bathing suits and flip flops.

Say it ain’t so.

Ah, but here it is. May as well embrace it. And while you’re sitting on a

has produced scholarship winners.

Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a $6,500 scholarship to NYU for dance education and a $2,000 academic scholarship to Hofstra.

Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and is now under contract with the company. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo & Juliet, and in July 2004 was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia.

The studio now competes regionally, across Long Island, as well as nationally, in New York City.

Classes are offered in Ballet, Tap, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Streetdance, Modern and Irish step; as well as Acro, Musical Theatre and Terrific Toddler Time for both boys and girls.

Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 31st anniversary of teaching.

A mother of grown twins, she wanted to create a unique school where pre-schoolers received the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefited from her professional background and the “world class” training that she is able to offer. This abuse is a serious and growing problem.

By providing convenient locations for the disposal of medications, we hope to curb access to these drugs, which while beneficial when taken as prescribed,

can become addictive and dangerous when used for nonmedical purposes.

In last April’s Drug Take-Back initiative, North ShoreLIJ facilities collected 863 lbs. of unused or expired medications at its facilities, for a total of 4,800 pounds since 2010.

In addition, proper disposal of medications can benefit our health and environment.

Prior to the start of the 2014-2015 school year, incoming Levittown sixthgrade students from Jonas E. Salk and Wisdom Lane middle schools attended orientation assemblies to prepare for the first day of school.

At Jonas E. Salk Middle School, junior leaders greeted the incoming students and attended an assembly with Principal John Zampaglione and Assistant Principal Patrick Mulligan, who both advised the students to be

organized, work hard and ask questions. The students toured the building and practiced opening their lockers within four minutes, the period of time it takes to change classes.

Wisdom Lane Middle School students attended the orientation with their parents and were greeted

by Principal John Avena and sixth-grade class advisor Dave Radtke, who spoke about a typical day schedule, classroom transitions, supplies, homework and key

policies. Avena also gave the students an important piece of advice.

“It is important to learn who you are and what you can do,” Avena said.

During both orientations, the students toured their respective buildings and diligently practiced opening their lockers. They also took the time to decorate their lockers, reacquaint themselves with former peers and get to know new classmates.

Setting The Bar The central theme of Wantagh School District’s annual Superintendent’s Conference Day, which was attended by approximately 600 teachers and staff, local officials and community organization representatives, was about setting an already high bar even higher in the education of district students.

“Those who achieve the highest levels of success are those who reflect upon strengths and strive to improve at each and every turn,” Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg said. “Imagine what your

lessons would be like if you set the bar even higher than it has been and strive each day to meet the higher bar you have set for yourself.”

During the welcome back assembly, Goldberg encouraged administrators, teachers and staff to ask ‘how’ a student is motivated, to remain mindful of the impact on learning by a student’s emotional and social needs and to reflect on how to address and meet the needs of each student.

In addition, Board of Education President

Anthony Greco reminded the teachers that they would continue to receive unwavering support from the Board.

“As you enter the classroom on the first day of school, remember that you are not alone,” he said.

In addition to welcoming remarks, the staff was required to attend elementary and secondary department meetings, building faculty meetings and even had time to set up their classrooms for the first day of school on September 2nd.
