New staff members met for a two-day orientation that included a presentation on parentteacher conferences, school-tohome connections and classroom management. This is the time of year, in late summer, when all thoughts point north – to Saratoga Springs, home of the world-famous race course, the sprawling Adirondack Mountains… and utter tranquility.

My family and I have been going to Saratoga for the better part of my life each summer, our little “home away from home” where the air is fresher, the people are friendlier and the city welcomes you as one of its own.

Primarily a “summer town,” Saratoga is perhaps best known for its thoroughbred racing; but that is certainly only a small aspect of what it has to offer. Simple wandering down Broadway, the main strip of town, will afford you

endless hours of browsing in the quaint shops, eating at the dozens of restaurants and bars, wandering through the two beautiful parks and gawking at the gorgeous multi-million dollar homes.

If you wander slightly off the beaten path, you will find the National Racing Museum, the National Dance Museum and the grounds of Yaddo Gardens, an artists’ retreat housing some of the most beautiful and exotic plants within its gates. Skidmore College calls Saratoga home as well, as it cultivates the next generation of artists and, with them, the artistic vibe which reverberates throughout the city.

The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, located within the cozy confines of Saratoga State Park, welcomes cultural performances of all genres

throughout the summer, from the NYC Ballet to the Philadelphia Orchestra to some of the most popular national musical acts.

Another staple of the schedule is the annual Jazz Festival, a two-day event which brings together thousands of people on the lawn to picnic and enjoy a common love.

Of course, Saratoga Springs has plenty to offer throughout the year; but there is something about those late summer weekends, that mixture of sunshine and slight chill in the air, the tailend of racing season and the beginning of a new college year, which seems like the best of all worlds.

Indeed, how happy I am that Saratoga has become a part of my world, at least for a brief moment each summer.

At this year’s Marcum Workplace Challenge, employees from Catholic Health Services (CHS) once again rose to the occasion, with winning results. Team CHS took 1st place among coed teams for the Healthcare Challenge and earned 2nd place out of all 46 coed teams, with a time of 1:40:31. In addition, Stephanie Bazan, of CHS’s Mercy Medical Center, placed within the top 5 women runners, at 22 minutes and 48 seconds.

Cathy Magone, also from Mercy, earned the 4th spot in the Women’s Top Dog category, coming in at 43:10. Collectively, with a time of 2:25:59, CHS’s female competitors secured a place in the top 20 women’s teams participating in the event, while CHS’s male runners clocked 2:13:32, placing them 52nd among the men’s teams.

the opportunity to pursue other avenues in the art and design fields.

In the summer of 2016, the Art League of Long Island launched Pre-College Programs for students interested in learning what it takes to become an Architect or Fashion Designer.

Taught by established and practicing Architects and Fashion Designers, teens age 13 to 18 gained a deeper knowledge of these design professions through hands-on contact in their chosen medium, improved their creative design skills, and learned about these industries as a whole.

Although there was room for many more program participants, attendance in the first year of the Fashion and Architecture programs exceeded early expectations due to the generosity of donors who provided scholarships for students to attend the programs.

The Art League of Long Island is a not-for-profit visual arts organization that offers classes and workshops for children and adults, from beginner to advanced levels. Their art gallery hosts a dozen exhibits per year, featuring contemporary works by many local artists.

More than three dozen teen art and design students in the Art League of Long Island’s Fashion Design, Architecture, and Pre-College Portfolio programs celebrated their achievements at a gallery exhibition and reception held in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery on August 21st. Students in the three programs, all under the umbrella of the newly launched Design Your Summer program, showcased the results of their artwork and designs created during the course of the summer.

The closing reception on the 21st attracted a large and enthusiastic crowd of students, family members, and friends.

For the past 20 years, the Summer Pre-College Portfolio Program has reached hundreds of teens interested in the arts, with some going on to art education careers in their adulthood. Having seen the impact of the program on the participants, the Art League recognized a need to provide students

Teacher Orientation The Seaford School District will begin the 2016-2017 school year with a host of new teachers following the retirement of several veteran staff members last June.

“We are pleased to welcome this pool of talented and skilled professionals to our Seaford team,” said John Striffolino, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Personnel K-12. “This year we’ve seen a higher turnover in staff due to retirements, but we are confident that the expertise and fresh ideas of our new staff members will help guide our students to high achievement and growth.”

The district welcomes to Seaford High School Robert Maloney, Jr.as a Spanish teacher who served in a temporary position last year, Diana Arichabala as an English as a Second Language and Spanish teacher; Steven Anusiak, Cristina Capasso and Ariel Yadegar as special education teachers and Kelly Basacchi as a math teacher.

Former technical education teacher Neal Hagan has taken a position as an art teacher. Jenna Davis, Lauren Compitello and Faith Warren have been hired temporarily to replace staff members who are out on leave.

Seaford Middle School begins the year with a new assistant principal, Lisa A. Dunn. She replaces Thomas Burke who became principal of Harbor Elementary School. Other middle school newcomers are science teacher Amanda Shirrefs, ENL/foreign language teacher Melissa Nuzio and technology education teacher Brian

Heyanka, who will also work part-time in the high school. Former Manor Elementary School teacher Danielle Aliveari and former Harbor Elementary School teacher Janene Diglio have transferred to the middle school to teach sixth grade. Former Manor School special education teacher Chelsea Bianco has transferred to the middle school to teach sixth-grade special education.

She is currently out on leave and will be temporarily replaced by Mary Louise Cairo.

With Thomas Burke as the new principal and Caroline Schozer as its full-time assistant principal, Harbor Elementary School begins a new chapter in leadership.

Schozer previously split her time as assistant principal for the Harbor and Manor elementary schools, but is pleased to devote her energy and focus on students at one elementary school. The Harbor School also

welcomes elementary teacher Antonella Denk, special education teacher Kristina Lopez and music teacher Pamela Brinkman. Dana Kearney has been hired as a leave replacement teacher and Alia Frassa as a leave replacement social worker.

Manor Elementary School will open its doors to a new assistant principal, Mary-Ellen Kakalos, as well as special education teacher Melanie Perkins, elementary school teacher Jillian Egan and library media specialist Samantha Simon. Lauren Vegessi has been hired as a temporary special education teacher.

New staff members met for a two-day orientation that included a presentation on parent-teacher conferences, schoolto-home connections and classroom management.

They also participated in technology training, took a bus tour of the district, and met with the teachers’ union and then their principals in their respective buildings. Harbor fourth-grade teacher Rich Thau also spoke to new teachers about his transition last year as a new teacher to the Seaford School District.

Striffolino conducted the orientation with the assistance of Danielle DiStefano, a former Seaford teacher who is an administrative intern in the Seaford and Franklin Square school districts.

New teachers will meet with Striffolino and building administrators throughout the year for additional training and support.

The backdrop for the town’s 9/11 program features a 15-foot-tall reverse shadow box of the iconic towers set against a 35-foot-long “remembrance mural” of the skyline of the “world’s capital.” A reflecting pool and sand monument will be at the foot of the towers and skyline.

Also at the ceremony, the public will hear reflections on 9/11 by members of Long Island’s clergy and Supervisor Santino.

Musical performances by the Kellenberg Gregorian Consortium and various soloists will be part of the program. Two fire department flag arches will greet guests, and the waters of the Atlantic will provide a backdrop of solace and healing.

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Long Island residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®.

The Walks will take place on September 17th, at Belmont Lake State Park in North Babylon and on September 24th, at Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for 3,000+

Besides reading, children were able to participate in many fun programs. Since the theme was sports, children enjoyed doing fun hands-on science programs like, “Science of Sports,” “Beautiful Bones,” “Magnetic Magic” and “On Your Mark Get Set, Shark!” Other fun events throughout the summer included “Nick the Balloonatic,” a “Jester Jim” Show, “Ronald McDonald’s Meet & Greet” and the “Singing School Bus Driver” musical program.

New Principal Named

Peter Dalton of Massapequa Park, who is taking the helm of Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, brings more than 20 years of diverse and invaluable experience with him to the position. Having served a leadership role in both the New York State educational system and the United States Air Force, he is well equipped to lead Barry Tech to even greater success.

Mr. Dalton comes to Barry Tech on the heels of a six-year tenure as Assistant Principal of Sewanhaka High School.

In this role, he served as the head of the district’s career and technical education program. “The model is similar to that of Nassau BOCES,” Mr. Dalton observes. “We had students from five different high schools - five different school cultures - just as Barry Tech serves students from districts throughout Long Island.”

Before that, Mr. Dalton was the founding Principal of the Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy VI, a successful Title I school in the New York City school system, where he served for four years.

He instituted some of the guiding principles he

learned in the Air Force, building them into the framework and structure of the school, taking a military approach to instruction.

In the Air Force, Mr. Dalton served as a search and rescue pilot. He was selected as a member of the Honor Cordon for his Officer Candidate Class, a distinction he earned for his “outstanding demonstration of integrity, resilience and leadership.” Mr. Dalton sees many of the core values of the Air Force embodied in Nassau BOCES, specifically, “integrity and excellence.”

“Barry Tech is a phenomenal school,” Dalton says. “The name leads the way in career and technical education. If I had a Barry Tech available to me as a kid, there’s no question I would have gladly attended to get a jump start on my dream of becoming a pilot.”

In his inaugural year as principal, Mr. Dalton says that he is “excited to learn” and looks forward to discovering each program firsthand, building relationships with teachers, and working with the administrative team on the areas that need the most focus. He plans to establish a clear set of expectations across the board for students, faculty and staff.

“I want to make a significant contribution to what they are doing here,” Mr. Dalton says.

“Through education and life experiences, I can take a fresh look at what we’re doing, to help this school to go from great to even better. Ultimately, I hope

to improve instruction, build programs, and ensure that Barry Tech remains at the leading edge of career and technical education.”

Within the school, Mr. Dalton plans to focus on instruction. “I’ve heard wonderful things about the teachers,” he says. “There is a sense of professional trust that they share and all of them are experts in their chosen fields. Every teacher has a set of skills.

I want to help them to improve those skills and to become even better educators.” In the larger community, he hopes to collaborate with other principals across the county, to draw on their expertise, and to “give them the opportunity to truly understand what it is we do.”

Mr. Dalton believes that “the essence of career and technical education is giving students a skill set to work with in going on to careers or college.”

His overarching goal for Barry Tech is to “have our students become even more successful.”

In addition to his many leadership roles, Mr. Dalton has nearly ten years of experience as a classroom teacher.

He is a member of the School Administrators Association of New York State, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators. He holds a degree in educational administration from Baruch College, as well as both a master’s and bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University.

CELEBRATING SERVICE - NUMC Volunteers celebrate their service at a party held in their honor. Volunteers were treated to a pizza party in appreciation for their dedication and assistance on the various floors of the hospital, helping patients and staff.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks will be held on two dates and at two locations, starting on Sunday, October 16th, at Jones Beach State Park, 1 Ocean Parkway in Wantagh, and on Sunday, October 23rd, at Suffolk Community College Eastern Campus, 121 Speonk Riverhead Road in Riverhead.

“With an estimated 60,000 participants at Jones Beach and several thousand more on the East End, Long Island hosts the largest attended event in the country,” said Patti Lestrange Mack, American Cancer Society Communications Director.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive, inspirational event that raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone.

take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable.

“We are excited to unite all towns and communities in Nassau and Suffolk at the Making Strides walk to celebrate breast cancer survivors, pay tribute to loved ones lost, and raise funds to move us one step closer to a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer,” said Katie Goepfrich, Senior Community Manager at the American Cancer Society. “From research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery, we provide support to everyone impacted by breast cancer.”
