A GREAT SUMMER EXPERIENCE - Whether they were building towers, making arts and crafts or meeting their local heroes, elementary students in the Seaford School District had an enriching experience during a 10-day camp at Seaford Manor Elementary School. The camp concluded on Aug. 20 with superheroes day, and children received a visit from Nassau County police officers and Seaford firefighters.

At the ceremony, the Town will unveil new names inscribed on to the Walls of Honor that recently lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero. The September 9th ceremony includes bagpipe music, religious readings and remarks by family members of the victims.

The Town’s 9/11 Memorial - featuring a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center - is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11, 2001. The Walls of Honor monument expands each year with newly inscribed names of those who lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero.

Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-profit organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island.

Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give.

This non-profit was founded in 1965 by Reverend J.A. Gaines, his wife, Reverend Rose Marie Gaines, and her mother, Florence E. Meringola. After witnessing local poverty conditions first hand, they invested everything that they had with the view that if they could help even one person it was worth the investment! They worked very hard and sacrificed much to build a strong community and leave a great legacy to be carried on. Their prayer was that the Helping Hand Rescue Mission would remain a “lighthouse” in our community.

56 years later, their work continues under the direction of the founders’ daughter, Rev. Kimberly Gaines-Gambino, who functions as the President/Pastor of this organization. She has also served as Pastor of Half Hollow Community Church in Dix Hills from 2011-2019, however she resigned from that position in January of 2020 to devote more of her time to the work of HHRM. She is a wife to her husband Andrew and mom & stepmom to five amazing kids.

How does HHRM serve others?

Feeding The Hungry: HHRM serves approximately 200-300 families per week with non-perishable items and fresh produce, fruit, meat, eggs, milk and bread. Since March 21, 2020, they have given out over 27,000 food bags to people in need on Long Island. HHRM partners with many schools, organizations, temples, churches, youth organizations, civic organizations, clubs, businesses, and

the many individuals and families donating to our pantry to gather food for the hungry.

School Supply Distribution: Every child deserves to have the supplies they need for their education, feel confident in a room with their peers and be prepared for their school year.

This non-profit gathers and distributes school supplies to local children that are in need.

Baby Blessings: Baby Blessings is a part of HHRM that focuses on providing families with children under 3 years old with diapers, baby clothes, other baby supplies and a brunch! Baby Blessings is hosted at Huntington Assembly of God every third Tuesday of the month. HHRM is so thankful to partner with Family Service League, the Allied Foundation and Huntington Assembly of God to make Baby Blessings possible.

Community Closet: HHRM runs something called the Community Closet, which provides new and gently used seasonallyappropriate clothing to anyone in need during it’s hours of operation. Appropriate clothing can be a genuinely difficult expense for families, especially since most have children that are always growing.

Helping Hand Rescue Mission also holds various other outreach programs, some of which are seasonal. There are many ways you can volunteer with, donate to or receive help from HHRM. Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more on that!

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced the extension of beach season in the Town of Oyster Bay, as TOBAY Beach will remain open on weekends and select days through September 26th.

Lifeguards will be on duty to protect residents as they enjoy the nice weather and swim in the ocean on September 7th and 8th (when many schools are closed), as well as during the weekends of September

staycation destination even more convenient and enticing.”

As part of the extension of the summer beach season, TOBAY Beach will be open Saturdays and Sundays through September 26th, as well as the days following Labor Day, Tuesday, September 7th and Wednesday, September 8th. Lifeguards will be on duty, manning stands and protecting residents in the ocean each of these days.

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is holding a remembrance Mass for families of victims, first responders and Ground Zero workers as part of the 20th year remembrance of the September 11th 2001 Terrorist Attacks on America.

The Mass will be led by Bishop John O. Barres, of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. This special service will be held outside at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood’s 9/11 Memorial. The Mass will take place on Saturday, Sept.

11, 2021, beginning at 1 p.m.

Attendees are asked to arrive by 12:30 p.m.

Family members and members of the Long Island Community and the public are welcome and encouraged to attend. Seating will be limited, and not guaranteed.

Recognizing that some family members may be elderly and/or need assistance, those attending are urged to plan in advance and consider arriving early.

Parking may be some distance from the September 11th Memorial where the outdoor Mass will be held.

Attendees are asked to RSVP

by Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021 by completing the RSVP form on www.CCLongIsland. org or to email Memorials@ CCLongIsland.org with their name and the number of attendees.

Approximately one hundred names have recently been added to the cemetery’s September 11th Memorial. The memorial, a beautiful black marble sculpture that is the center piece of a specially designated area of the cemetery which was set aside for victims of the terrorist attacks, was erected in 2003. The memorial currently displays the names of 414 individuals who were victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. Newly added names include both those who passed away on 9/11 and individuals who worked at Ground Zero and succumbed to related illnesses, bringing the number of those to be remembered on the memorial on the day of the Mass to approximately 500 in total.

“As we mark the 20th year since 9-11, we know that many people remain profoundly impacted. This special Mass led by Bishop Barres is an important event on this solemn day. It is important that we remember the victims of the attacks, those who rushed to their aid and all who selflessly gave of themselves afterwards at Ground Zero, suffering years of chronic health conditions and related illnesses. Our memorial wall at Holy Rood Cemetery is a place of solace,

reflection and tribute to the lives that were tragically lost. We welcome all to visit the memorial at any time, including joining us at this remembrance mass,” said Richard Bie, CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island.

animal rescue group, a service dog foundation and the Nassau County Police Department’s mounted unit. On STEAM Day, there were cup-stacking challenges and other projects that tested their problem-solving abilities.

The last day of camp was superheroes day, with some special guests on head. Students met their local heroes, including police officers from the 7th Precinct and Seaford firefighters, and got to check out a police car and fire engine.

The program was funded through federal grant money to support schools in meeting the academic, social, emotional and mental health needs of students resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every day, students attended a social and emotional learning workshop, which included relaxation exercises such as mindfulness yoga and

breathing techniques, a read aloud related to the topic of the day, an art activity, game or STEAM challenge, time for reflection and connections to the 16 Habits of Mind.

Seaford Harbor Assistant Principal Caroline Schozer served as the program coordinator and said the goal was to provide students with a variety of new experiences while preparing them for the upcoming school year. She said it was a great opportunity for children to reconnect with their classmates and make new friends while doing activities they may not have done before.

Dr. Charles Leone, executive director for humanities, added that the different projects were exciting and engaging, and designed to foster socialization that occurs “naturally and authentically.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board joined with Philip Renna of the Christina Renna Foundation to recognize September 2021 as “National Children’s Cancer Awareness Month” in the Town of Oyster Bay. The Christina Renna Foundation was established

in memory of Philip and Rene Renna’s daughter Christina, a Long Island teenager who died in January 2007 from a rare soft tissue cancer. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting children’s cancer research and furthering awareness and education through the support of cancer groups and outreach

programs for those in need. After her diagnosis, Christina dreamt of a world entirely free of cancer, and the Christina Renna Foundation established in her name celebrates her life, her vision, and her lasting legacy. The Elementary Summer Experience, for students who just completed grades K-5 at the Harbor and Manor schools, featured three hours of hands-on activities on weekday mornings from Aug. 9 to 20. Every day had a theme, such as animals, the beach, magic, space and superheroes. Students rotated through different centers – art, STEAM, physical education, social and emotional learning and, of course, snack time – with activities relating to the daily theme.

What is Rosh Hashanah?

Rosh Hashanah is an important holiday on the Jewish calendar. According to the Jewish National Fund, Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish New Year and is a celebration of the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve. One such tradition is the sounding of the shofar, which the JNF notes is representative of the trumpet blast that sounded the coronation of kings. The shofar itself is a ram’s horn that calls to mind the story of the Blinding of Isaac, an event that occurred on Rosh Hashanah and involved a ram taking Isaac’s place as an offering to God. Of course, no celebration of Rosh Hashanah, which takes place over two days, is complete without a festive meal. Foods served during Rosh Hashanah celebrations tend to be sweet and are meant to symbolize hopes for an enjoyable year ahead. In addition, the JNF says it is customary on Rosh Hashanah to eat foods with names that allude to blessing and prosperity.
