“Tanker Foes” To Put Allied And Enemy Armor “On The Road”

As The Museum Of American Armor And Nassau County Pay Tribute To All Those Who Have Served This Labor Day Weekend

On Labor Day Weekend, Saturday, September 2nd, and Sunday, September 3rd between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, will present “Tanker Foes” that will allow visitors to see in motion historic Allied and replica enemy armor used by combatants during World War II.

The armor program will take place adjacent to the Armor Museum. Among the museum’s inventory are full size operational German replica armor meant to underscore the courage and sacrifice of American forces required to confront and defeat an implacable foe nearly 80 years ago.

The legendary Sherman tank and M18 Hellcat will be driven within museum grounds, passing a replica Tiger tank, one of the most feared weapons on the World War II battlefield. Other armor in operation will include a tank recovery vehicle, recon armor cars that liberated the Nazi death camps, a British Bren Carrier similar to those that came ashore at Normandy, and a broad range of other historic military vehicles.

The program is made possible, in part, through the support of the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums, PSEG Long Island, Squad Security, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, BDG, Ltd., and the Bristal Assisted Living.

The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, is inside the grounds of Old Bethpage Village Restoration (OBVR) and is open year around, Wednesday and Fridays through Sundays. Recommended admission donations for entry are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and veterans and children between the ages of 5 and 12.

Free Animal Adoption Month This September At Town Animal Shelter

Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic Scheduled For September 9th

Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announces that the Town’s Animal Shelter will waive adoption fees throughout the month of September.

“I invite and encourage residents looking for a new pet, to check in with the Town’s Animal Shelter during the month of September, as general adoption fees will be waived. Our shelter staff has a wonderful reputation for providing great care to the pets housed there, and has a long history of uniting those looking for a fur-ever companion,” said Clerk LaMarca.

During the month of September, the shelter will waive the general adoption fees of $80 per dog and $84 per cat. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spaying or neutering of the

animal, vaccination and microchipping. Residents interested in viewing the animals available for adoption can call the shelter to make an appointment, or visit www.oysterbaytown. com.

“In addition to free adoption month, the Town will be hosting a Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Animal Shelter on September 9th from 10 am to 2 pm. No reservations are necessary,” said Clerk LaMarca. Microchip services will also be available for a $25 fee. “If a pet is ever lost, they can be taken to a vet clinic or animal shelter where they will be scanned for a microchip ID and returned to their rightful owner.”

Once dogs reach four months of age, owners are required to obtain an annual dog license and verification tag. The general license fee is $15 for an unneutered or unspayed dog and $10 for a neutered or spayed dog. There is no fee for licensing a guide dog, hearing dog, service dog, war dog, detection dog or police dog. Fees for senior citizens are $5. Experienced Business Official Joins Seaford Administrative Team

The Seaford School District announces the appointment of Richard Cunningham as the interim assistant superintendent for business and operations. The experienced business administrator joined the district for the start of the 2023-24 school year.

Mr. Cunningham comes to Seaford from neighboring Massapequa, where he was the interim assistant superintendent for business for seven months. Prior to that, he was the assistant superintendent for business in the PlainviewOld Bethpage School District for seven years. In West Hempstead from 2005 to 2015, he served in several central office roles including assistant superintendent for business and operations, assistant superintendent for curriculum and

instruction, and deputy superintendent. His career in education began in Hicksville Public Schools, where he was a middle school science teacher and academic coordinator.

This past June, Seaford Teacher Christina Ficarelli was recognized by Nassau BOCES and the Nassau Association of School Technologists (NASTECH) as a pioneering educator who has contributed significantly to the advancement of technology in education. Ms. Ficarelli was honored at the fifth annual Nassau Association of School Technologists Award Recipient (NASTAR) awards ceremony, held at the Nassau BOCES Brookville Outdoor and Environmental Education Center.

Ms. Ficarelli regularly implements productive technology tools in her classroom, designed to maximize student engagement. Dance Mat Typing offers an engaging way for students to learn how to touch type — an absolutely essential skill

in the digital age. Students progress through four levels in 12 stages that gradually build upon the number of keys they’re expected to master.

Microsoft OneNote provides a personal workspace for each student with a content library for handouts, while including a collaborative space for lessons and creative activities.

The NASTAR awards were created by the Nassau BOCES NASTECH Service to honor educators for their innovation, leadership and support of technology initiatives in their school districts. Each recipient is selected by their district based on this criterion. This year, a total of 27 Nassau County educators were acknowledged for their achievements in a ceremony conducted by Nassau BOCES NASTECH and Data Privacy and Security Service Supervisor Laura Pollak and Program Specialist Barbara Deal.

Transportation Security Administration indicate that the Friday before Labor Day 2022 was the second busiest travel day at U.S. airports that summer. Travel was equally popular on Labour Day weekend 2022 in Canada, where the online booking platform Kayak reports searches for

international flights had increased by 104 percent compared to the year prior. Labor Day weekend travel figures to be just as popular this year, so travelers can remember these tips as they plan one last summer getaway.

• Book as early as possible. With so many people interested in traveling on Labor Day weekend, it behooves all travelers to plan ahead. Competition for hotel rooms and other lodgings might be steep, and individuals who plan to fly might have trouble finding seats on flights that leave during peak travel hours the longer they delay.

• Consider traveling by car. Air travel aficionados had some good news and bad news as the summer travel season began in 2023. Data from FlightAware indicated that flight cancellations were down in 2023 compared to 2022. However, FlightAware

data also indicated there were an average of 7,000 to 9,000 flight delays per day in the U.S. in the first half of 2023. Saladino Extends Beach Weekends At TOBAY Through September 17th

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will help residents hold on to summer a little while longer by extended hours at TOBAY Beach for two additional weekends after Labor Day – Saturday & Sunday, September 9th and 10th, as well as 16th and 17th. TOBAY will stay open free of charge those two extra weekends with lifeguards on duty from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“To help our residents enjoy their summers a little longer we will once again

be extending summer fun at TOBAY, free of charge, for two additional weekends this year,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We invite all our residents and their families to come out and enjoy this beautiful facility, take in some nice weather and savor the last of the summer season.”

Residents visiting TOBAY Beach on Sunday, September 10th, can also enjoy the Town’s free, family fun Waterfront Festival at TOBAY Marina, presented by Optimum. In addition to a

free concert featuring Jimmy Kenny and the Pirate Beach Band, the ultimate beach party tribute band to Jimmy Buffet, Kenny Chesney, and the Zac Brown Band, the day of free family fun will feature marine and outdoor exhibits, a children’s snapper derby, police boat demonstrations, food concessions and much more!
