This program takes local high school students and places them in real-life probationary firefighter training courses under the guidance of the Nassau County Fire Service Academy (NCFSA) in Bethpage, NY. Having trained Nassau County Volunteer Firefighters since it opened in 1961, NCFSA is well equipped to offer youth an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in fire service. Under the direction of Chief Instructor Robert V. Hughes Jr. (rhughes@veeb. org) and Assistant Chief Instructor Paul subjectstrainings(pwilders@veeb.org),Wildersthecovervariousfromemergency evacuation procedures to fire extinguisher drills and second-story bailouts, while also putting the students through live, guided vehicle and warehouse fires. “Not your ordinary summer camp,” said Senator Brooks, “this annual program provides a valuable opportunity to learn the skills needed to join the volunteer fire service. Childcare To Become More Affordable For Many Low And Moderate Income Families
Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services. “A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.”According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. Town Partners With Long Island United For Recovery For 7th Annual Walk
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that the Town is partnering with Long Island United for Recovery to host their 7th annual walk, taking place on Sunday, September 18th, at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. Check-in begins at 10:30 a.m. for an 11 a.m. walk start time. The event will be held rain or shine. “We invite all residents to join us at this event, which will honor those who have lost their battle, encourage advocacy and awareness to create change, support those in the flight, and celebrate those in recovery,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We thank Long Island United for Recovery for all of their efforts to bring resources together to support those in need.” Participants in the walk will be supporting those struggling with the disease of addiction, and celebrating those in recovery and their family members. Athletes Invited to Participate in TOBAY Triathlon & Junior Triathlon Swim, Bike, and Run in 2022 Events Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town of Oyster Bay is partnering with Runner’s Edge to host the Junior TOBAY Triathlon and the TOBAY Triathlon at Theodore Roosevelt Park this summer. The Junior Triathlon will take place on Saturday, August 27th for children ages 8-13 and the TOBAY Triathlon for individuals and relay teams with participants 14 years or older, will be on Sunday, August 28th.
The Triathlon will commence at Theodore Roosevelt Park on Sunday, August 28th with the transition area opening at 5:30 a.m. The first wave will begin at 7:00 a.m. with a ½ mile swim in the Oyster Bay Harbor. Following the swim will be a 12.3-kilometer bike ride through Oyster Bay and Oyster Bay Cove, followed by the final 5-kilometer run that will return participants to Theodore Roosevelt Park for a concluding awards ceremony and raffle drawing. Participants in the Junior TOBAY Triathlon should arrive no later than 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 27th for a 200-yard swim, 2.5-mile bike and a 1-mile run. “The triathlon begins with a half-mile swim in the calm waters of the harbor, followed by a beautiful bike ride and scenic run,” added Councilman Labriola. “All participants will receive shirts and custom finisher medals, and Town residents receive a discount on registration.”
Packet pick up for both races will take place on Thursday, August 25th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Runner’s Edge located at 242 Main Street in Farmingdale or Saturday August 27th, for the Triathlon at Theodore Roosevelt Park from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If participants wish to pick up their packet on Sunday morning, there will be an extra $10 charge.
