Hunger Solutions New York is soliciting proposals for the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP). Community Based Organizations will have the opportunity to apply for a grant to provide free and confidential services that connect hungry New Yorkers to nutrition assistance programs. New York State has long recognized that the use of federal nutrition assistance programs is critical to addressing the problem of hunger and that many of these programs are underutilized. As a result, NOEP has operated in New York State since 1987. Through NOEP, 501(c) (3) community-based organizations are funded to: promote the benefits of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program) to the local community; provide

us and adding their star power will help ensure that Maureen’s Haven has the resources to carry out its mission.” Joann Piche, Chairwoman of the Maureen’s Haven Board of Directors, thanked developer cousins Gregg and Mitchell Rechler for serving as presenting sponsors of the Lobster Bash. “We are so grateful that they are helping to underwrite the costs involved in mounting this fundraiser,” she commented. “Their generous support in 2012 and again this year is essential to the event’s success.” The Rechlers, both of whom have homes on the East End, are currently developing The Hampton Business District

at Gabreski Airport, in Westhampton Beach, and the Canoe Place Inn project in Hampton Bays. Serving as Lobster Bash event chairs are Ellen Cea, Director of Tenant and Community Development at The Hampton Business District, and Joyce Skarka, Founder and President of Inspired Marketing Strategies. According to Cea, this year’s lobster bash has a new theme. “We’re going country!” she laughed. “To complement the great food and drink, we’re serving up live country music, line dancing, and a whole lot of other country surprises. It’s all about having fun.” Skarka added, “Where else can you do the Boot Scootin’ Boogie for a good cause? This is one

Hamptons fundraiser where everyone will be able to let their hair down and have a great time.” Now in its 11th year, Maureen’s Haven provides shelter, meals, and vocational and educational training to homeless adults and families throughout the East End. The proceeds raised from the Lobster Bash will directly benefit Maureen’s Haven’s winter shelter program and its day center, which serves those in need year round. Annual Run A Success

Jewish Boot Camp Summer time is camp time for many young people but so too it can be camp time for adults. On Saturdays August 10th, 24th and 31st Rabbi Steven Moss of B’nai Israel in Oakdale will be holding Jewish Boot Camp. The

hours are: August 10th: 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon; August 24th: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and August 31st: 9:30 a.m. – 12 noon. This will be an intensive study of Judaism as the class will experience a Shabbat morning service, learn

the vocabulary of Jewish religious life; learn about customs and traditions; and how to navigate through the Bible and Talmud. Please RSVP to 631.563.1660. B’nai Israel is located at 67 OakdaleBohemia Road in Oakdale.

The Elizabeth McNamee Memorial Run is held each year in honor of Elizabeth. She was an outstanding individual and member of the community, and in her final year at NYU Law School, she suddenly

died from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), also known as sudden death syndrome. This year, there was a contingent of runners sporting tee shirts honoring the Boston

Marathon Run. In Elizabeth’s memory a scholarship was formed, and funds are used for programs to aid in research of HCM, the number one cause of sudden cardiac death among youth.

Co-presented by Gallery North and The Ward Melville Heritage Organization, Family Art Day will take place on August 10th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the Stony Brook Village Center. Local artists may submit samples of their art or photography to Judith Levy, Director of Gallery North no later than August 1st. There is a $50 fee

to exhibit. Judith can be contacted at 631.751.2676. Exhibits will be on display throughout the Market Square, Harbor Crescent and Inner Court sections of this picturesque north shore village nestled on Stony Brook Harbor. Families can also enjoy a “Sand Art” Craft with Eileen Hummel of Imagination Preschool, a “Draw Your Pet” craft and “Meet The Pets” in

conjunction with North Shore Animal League’s 40 Foot Petmobile which will be on site for the day. There will also be HorseDrawn Carriage Rides from 1 to 4 p.m. Events are free with the exception of the carriage rides which are $3 per person. For full information visit stonybrookvillage.com or call 631.751.2244.

On July 9th, Gabriel Cordell marked the end of his heroic cross-country journey in a wheelchair at the YMCA at Glen Cove. Cordell, a native Long Islander, was the victim of a car accident 20 years ago that left him a paraplegic. Over the last 99 days, Gabriel travelled 3100 miles —from California to his childhood home of Long Island – and celebrated his feat at the YMCA in Glen Cove. All along his endeavor, Gabriel visited various YMCAs, which he has said “has been a safe haven for him,” and has given him the inspiration to push past his perceived limits to achieve his potential. YMCA of Long Island President and CEO Anne N. Brigis welcomed Gabriel and thanked him for being a role model and motivational force to people of all ages and

abilities. Brigis said, “We are extremely proud that Gabriel found support and encouragement at the YMCA. We are so moved by his courage, determination and spirit.” Gabriel spend close to an hour speaking with campers at the YMCA and entertaining their questions. He told a group of about forty 9-10 yearolds, “Changing yourself starts with yourself but is supported by the people around you. At the Y I found a new family that showed me how to overcome my vices and do something with myself, but still for others.” About Gabriel Cordell In 1992, Cordell was a 22-year old aspiring actor driving to his first audition in New York City when his life was permanently altered. A driver ran a red light and hit Cordell’s jeep. Cordell flew into a

telephone pole, crushing his spinal cord at the 6th thoracic vertebrate. “My condition was caused by an accident, but it did not happen by accident,” said Cordell. “I felt I was meant to do something big and the wheelchair is my vehicle for doing it.” Cordell and his crew have already captured the hearts of thousands of people across the nation, with many following him on Facebook and via his website www.rollwithme. org. Says Cordell, “People say we inspire them and I feel the impact of their support tenfold. I’ve been moved to tears so many times that I’ve lost count but connecting with the people I meet never gets old.” A feature length documentary about Gabriel’s endeavor is in the works. LI Bike Challenge Riders will participate in the Long Island Bike Challenge (LIBC) on Sunday, August 4th, to support research conducted at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Participants in the LIBC will ride 40, 62 or 100 miles, ending in East Hampton. Money raised from the event will

be donated to the labs of researchers who study many diseases including cancer, inflammation, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. “As a native to Long Island, I appreciate the synergy of conducting an event on Long Island and raising donations for

medical research being conducted on Long Island, which provides jobs and economic benefit to this community,” said Edward Diller, founder of LIBC. “Furthermore, I believe strongly that scientific medical research is vital in finding cures and preventions for diseases, which is why it’s critical

that LIBC supports the mission of the Feinstein Institute to prevent disease and cure patients.” To participate or support the LIBC challenge, visit http://www. feinsteininstitute.org/ events/the-long-islandbike-challenge/. There are three starting points in the LIBC –

participants can bike for 100 miles, 62 miles, or 40 miles. The 100-mile ride begins at 6:00 am in the parking lot of the Wantagh LIRR station, the 62-mile ride begins in Medford at 9:15 a.m. and the 40-mile ride begins in Westhampton at 10:30 a.m. Volunteers will operate water stops every 20 miles

and mechanical support for bikes will be provided by local bike shops. The finish for all three rides is in East Hampton, where lunch will be provided. Bus transportation is offered to all riders to return to respective starting points.
