With temperatures currently in the 90s, residents probably aren’t thinking about winter storms. But in a proactive move to prepare for the winter season, Supervisor Anthony J. Santino has announced that the Town of Hempstead is seeking plow operators to help clear snow.

“America’s largest township is committed to quick snow removal and keeping our roadways clean and safe for motorists and pedestrians,” stated Santino. “We encourage all local plow operators interested in joining our team to reach out to the town’s Human Resources Department.”

I’m not sure when it became so difficult to plan things. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever.

Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen.

Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be

rescheduled at least three times before materializing.

For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks.

Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does.

I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore

than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate.

Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street.

Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait.

If only it could be written in ink from day one.

Pipeline Program

Twenty high achieving public school students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care, visited the Nassau University Medical Center along with their coordinator, Gina Granger.

The minority high school students are part of the Hofstra/Northwell School of Medicine Medical Scholars Pipeline Program, a special program for those exploring careers in

medicine. The students were introduced to the various health careers in NUMC, A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility and the five LI Federally Qualified Health Centers

by Kent Kessler, director of HR for NuHealth/NUMC. During the afternoon, the students also had an opportunity to meet Drs. Makaryus and Zeltser and find out about the cardiology program at

NUMC and to hear about the physicians’ experiences while in medical school and during their residencies and fellowships.

There has been a dramatic increase in psychiatric emergencies referred to The Guidance Center due to several factors: (1) inpatient hospitalization stays have shortened and are more difficult to access, (2) availability of inpatient and day treatment beds for children and youth have declined, (3) fewer agencies and private practitioners are readily available to respond, and (4) emergency room visits have become more time consuming and emotionally hazardous.

The Seaford Historical Society will host three different children’s programs, one each on three consecutive Sundays, August 7th, 14th and 21st. Presentations are from the Long Island Children’s Museum staff. These sessions are free to elementary school students.

Presiding Officer Norma L. Gonsalves attended Boy Scout Troop 577’s Eagle Court of Honor for Eagle Scout James P. Medici at St. Frances de Chantal School in Wantagh.

For his project, James, a resident of Bellmore, improved a building

in parking field eight, Eisenhower Park, East Meadow. The finished project consisted of the construction of a large set of bookcases and painting the men’s dressing room, existing freestanding shelves, along with a vestibule area.

The inductees are construction electricity student Harrison Coughlin, auto collision technician student William R. Farkash and automotive technology student Thomas Frintzilas.
