Long Island Heart Walk Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 16th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death.

The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh.

The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages.

Inspiration 101 I recently had the opportunity to speak to a small group of high school students with an interest in writing during a one-week digital journalism camp held at Hofstra University. Not quite sure what to expect, I brought samples of our newspaper and magazine, along with a brief bio of myself, my career trajectory thus far, and a handful of anecdotes to share with the group. As it turned out, all that information filled up precisely ten minutes of what was to be a nearly hourlong presentation.

Fortunately, there were several curious students among the crowd, and their questions kept the dialogue going for quite some time afterward. Most often, the queries centered on this very column, how long I had been writing it {first column published: July 27th, 2005}, how many I had accumulated to this point {roughly 675, give or take, as the number seems to fluctuate each time I dive into the archives - head scratching, I know}, and how I am able to come up with original topics each week.

That was a tough one to pinpoint. Mostly, I draw from my own personal experiences for the initial inspiration - observations of my surroundings, a quote I am particularly fond of, a bit of current events that seems worthy of mention. Clearly, there is no particular format; merely a free flow of thoughts that somehow manifests itself into words on a page, with a message that readers can (hopefully) relate to in their own unique ways.

Some followup questions included my favorite topics through the years {my Q&A with Don Mattingly immediately came to mind}, as well as the most difficult to write {the many memoriam-type pieces I have put together following the passings of several family members and close friends, at once heartfelt and healing}. Perhaps my favorite question though, was the one from the quiet young man in the corner who thoughtfully raised his hand to ask, “Do you ever start writing a piece and then decide you just don’t like it midway through?”

Yes. Absolutely. 100% YES. The fact is, no matter how much of a passion I or anyone else might have for writing, it’s nearly impossible to have each and every article turn out to be a winner.

There are those topics you are initially inspired by that seem to trail off halfway down the page, leaving you with a bit of a blank slate to fill. There are those you perhaps weren’t that passionate about to begin with, yet felt a sort of obligation to take a stab at. In these cases, as I explained to the class, it’s often best to scrap the entire concept and go back to the drawing board. After all, if the words aren’t holding your own attention, how can you expect readers to remain engaged?

As with most things, recognizing a flaw and attempting to correct it is an integral part of the process. This is how we learn, and ultimately grow, whether age 15 or 35. There is no limit to our capacity for improvement.

Practice may not always lead to perfection, but it can surely bring you closer to a finished product you can be proud of.

HOMEBUYER’S SEMINAR - Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin (left) held a First Time Homebuyers Seminar on June 14th, 2018 at the Levittown Public Library. Receiver of Taxes Clavin discussed tax payment collection periods, payment methods, tax exemptions, challenging assessments, Hempstead tax office extended hours and satellite office payment dates. Receiver of Taxes Clavin was joined by Anthony Genova, Carmelin Mitchell of Hempstead, Mike O’Brien of Hempstead, and Jennifer Miraglia and Michael Miller of Seaford.

Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney and Town Clerk Sylvia Cabana were proud to host Hempstead Town’s first Bilingual Story Time or Tiempo de Cuentos Bilingües today at the Freeport Library. The officials read the same story aloud - Councilwoman King Sweeney reading it in English and Town Clerk Cabana reading it in Spanish. Additionally, each child was able to choose a book to bring home from a collection that has been donated by The Book Fairies and local libraries.

The Book Fairies is a nonprofit organization located in Freeport that collects reading materials for people in need throughout metropolitan New York.

“Literacy in children is critically important.

It is the foundation for doing well in school, socializing with others and developing independence,” said Councilwoman King Sweeney. “I am so happy to have worked with Town Clerk Cabana to develop

this program that will help promote bilingual literacy.”

“Hempstead Town is extremely diverse and we have a large Spanishspeaking population,” noted Town Clerk Cabana.

“I am proud to acknowledge the important role that Hispanics have in our communities by working on programs that will support and uplift those for whom English is a second language.”

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children introduced to reading early on tend to read earlier and excel in school compared to children who are not exposed to language and books at a young age. More than 1 in 3 American children start Kindergarten without the skills they need to learn to read. Developing early literacy skills makes it easier for children to learn to read. Children who enter school with these skills have an advantage that carries with them

“I’m so happy to have kicked off our first Bilingual Story Time at Freeport Library, and I look forward to future story times at libraries throughout Hempstead Town,” concluded King Sweeney. “I would like to thank the many libraries, as well as The Book Fairies, for donating books for this enriching program.”

The Bilingual Story Time/Tiempo de Cuentos Bilingües, which is open to children of all ages, will be visiting the Wantagh Library located at 3285 Park Avenue in Wantagh on Tuesday, August 14th at 10:00 a.m., and the Seaford Library located at 2234 Jackson Avenue in Seaford on Thursday, August 16th at 10:30 a.m.

This September, thousands of i n d i v i d u a l s nationwide will join together in the battle against childhood cancer and other lifethreatening diseases by participating in the Long Island St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer.

Massapequa is one of 65 cities nationwide helping raise funds and awareness during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

In Massapequa, the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer will take place September 16th, at Westfield Sunrise Mall.

Because of generous donors and events like the St. Jude Walk/ Run to End Childhood Cancer, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment,

travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude won’t stop until no child dies from cancer.

With the support of participants, donors and more, we can end childhood cancer together.

“We are excited to have the community come out for this great family-friendly event,” said Pam Geiger, ALSAC Managing Director for the New York/New Jersey Region. “More importantly, their commitment to raise
