Principal Joseph Sheehan, recognized both the Division Avenue High School baseball team and the MacArthur High School baseball team for their successful season.

During the Levittown Public Schools’ annual Board of Education reorganization meeting on July 2nd, the board reelected Peggy Marenghi as board president and Marianne Adrian as board vice-president. In addition, trustee James Moran was nominated as temporary chairperson and Elizabeth Appelbaum was reappointed as district clerk for the 2018-2019 school year.

The board members were sworn into office along with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald. Following the reorganization meeting, the district’s regular board of education meeting was called to order. Counting Chickens “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” ~ John Lennon If there is one thing we have all learned throughout our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best.

We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know.

The rest is mere wistfulness.

This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop

for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really.

My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present.

I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours.

I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.

Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air?

Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life.

And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ...

Nothing, so far as I can tell.

There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

Mr. Lynch has 25 years of experience in education, including 14 as an administrator. He previously was the director for science, engineering and technology for grades 6-12 in the Roslyn School District. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and astronomy and a master’s degree in technology system management, both from Stony Brook University.

Russell Costa is the new director of facilities, a position he held in Valley Stream District 30 for the past five years. He previously worked in the facilities departments in the Hicksville, Mineola and New York City school districts. In Seaford, he will oversee the upkeep of the district’s buildings and grounds, supervise the facilities staff and coordinate work with outside contractors.

Ms. Culella-Sun holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology from John Jay College, a master’s degree in inclusive education from Adelphi College, a master’s degree in special education from Queens College and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the College of Saint Rose. She is presently pursuing her doctorate in educational leadership at Concordia University.
