The

Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that they are hosting the 45th Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament comprised of 6-player co-ed teams. This event will take

place on Saturday, July 22, 2023 and will be held rain or shine.

The tournament will begin at 9:00AM on the volleyball courts at Central Mall Field 4 at Jones Beach State Park. The first round of matches will be played as

a round robin. All teams are guaranteed to play seven games. The top two teams from each round robin bracket will advance on to the quarterfinals which will decide the two final teams. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place teams. The 3rd and 4th place teams will receive merchandise prizes.

Registration is FREE and is open until the roster is full. Players must be 14 years old or older to participate. Players of all skill levels are welcome to play and will be seeded accordingly. The Seaford Public Library takes great pride in presenting its Summer 2023 “Entertainment for a Summer Evening,” our very popular series of outdoor concerts. In addition to this, we have our night time Outdoor Movie. Service To Students Is Celebrated

The Seaford Board of Education celebrated administrators, teachers and staff for various career milestones at their June 21 meeting. Additionally, two departing board members were recognized for their volunteer service.

The district honored 14 retiring staff members for their careers in Seaford schools. This year’s retirees include Margaret Glancy and Laura Liepa (Harbor Elementary School), Susan Henle, Anna Lattazzio, Marianne Lombardi and Susan Mineo (Manor Elementary School), Michael Flynn and Anne Harlukowicz (middle school), Janine Cupo, Doris Evans and Karen Lazicky (high school) and Thomas Barrett, Janet Hoffman and Thomas Lynch (central office).

Administrators, including Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora, principals, assistant principals and directors, spoke about each retiree and their contributions to the school district. The honorees were gifted a plaque and silver apple.

Dr. Pecora recognized board of education trustees Stacie Stark and Natalie Pedisich for their service at their final public board meeting. Ms. Stark served on the board for nine years, including time as president and vice president, and Ms. Pedisich was a trustee for the past six years.

Tenure was granted to 15 Seaford educators including two administrators, Assistant Director for Pupil Personnel Services Joane Vincent and Director of

Physical Education, Health and Athletics Kevin Witt. Teachers earning tenure were Melanie Bien, Marisa DeGroff and Brooke DeSanto (Harbor), Jamie Flannery, Meghan Hunt, Angelina Lee, Tara Page and Kristin Whitman (Manor), Sarah Busch, Nicholas Coacci, Matthew Dolan and Danyi Hamilton (middle school) and Mary Lang (high school).

During speeches, building administrators highlighted the accomplishments of their young teachers. Each newly-tenured educator was also presented with a green apple.

Dr. Pecora also introduced several new teachers who have been recently hired and will be joining the Seaford staff for the 2023-24 school year.

Seaford Leadership Team Welcomes Pair Of Seasoned Educators

The Seaford School District announces the appointments of two administrators to its central office team, effective July 1. Amanda Barney has been named the assistant superintendent for curriculum and assessment and Debbie Langone will serve as the executive director for instructional technology and STEAM.

Ms. Barney joins Seaford from the Syosset School District, where she was the K-12 coordinator of English for the past six years. Prior to that, she was an English teacher, department coordinator and staff developer in the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District from 1999 to 2017.

One of the highlights of her career was serving as a Washington Teaching Ambassador Fellow for the United States Education Department for a year beginning in July 2016.

She was one of only two teachers from across the nation selected for the fellowship and she served under the Secretary of Education for two different administrations. Ms. Barney’s responsibilities included planning leadership summits, creating and delivering presentations, writing speeches, networking with teachers across the county and facilitating meetings between the Secretary of Education and state and local educational agencies, professional organizations, administrators, teachers and students.

With a broad perspective on how public education is delivered across the county, Ms. Barney feels humbled and gracious to join Seaford’s leadership team. She has already seen the strong connections between the school and community by attending several end-of-year events including graduation and

the Patriot Awards dinner.

“I see how special Seaford is. It’s a shining star,” she said. “I’ve seen public education systems around the country and Seaford is amazing. I can bring what I’ve learned to the table and build on the programs we have.”

One program that stands out for her is LIFT. The reimagined elementary library program focuses on four key areas – library and research, innovation, fit minds and bodies, and technology and STEAM challenges. Ms. Barney noted that the program was developed in Seaford, which demonstrates the innovation and imagination of the district’s educators.

Donations Delivered For Homeless Children’s Birthday Celebrations

Ms. Langone comes to Seaford from West Islip, where she was the director of science and engineering technology for the past four years. She taught science for 25 years, with experience at the high school level in the East Meadow School District and the middle school level in Oceanside and Sewanhaka. During her time in the classroom, she received the Harvard Club of Long Island Distinguished Teacher Award and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Educator of Distinction Award.

Through her extensive research experience, she has explored the areas of biodiversity, geology, neurophysiology and molecular genetics. She has also taught biology and science education at the collegiate level, including at Adelphi University and Nassau Community College.

our students for their experiences beyond our schools.”

Ms. Langone holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in biology, both from Queens College, and is currently a doctoral candidate at Molloy University. Ms. Barney has a bachelor’s degree in English from Bates College in Maine, a master’s degree in secondary English education from Dowling College and school district and building leadership certificates from Stony Brook University. She is pursuing her doctorate in transformational leadership from Long Island University.

24-Hour Lacrosse Benefit Game at the Town of Oyster Bay’s John J. Burns Park, located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. This year’s round-the-clock event begins on the morning of July 13th at 9:00am and continues non-stop for 24 hours until July 14th at 9:00am. Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that the Second Half of the 2023 General Tax Levy is due on July 1st, but can be paid without penalty through August 10th.

“New York State Law allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Receiver Pravato explained. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid. So make your

payment before August 10th and don’t delay, and you will ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.”

The Tax Office is open at both Town Hall North, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm to assist residents and accept payments with a check, cash or credit card. On August 9th and 10th both offices will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill.

There are also outdoor walkup windows, and drop boxes have been installed at both locations for residents to make payments when the Tax Office is closed.

Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Please make your check payable to Jeffrey P. “SHOOTOUT FOR SOLDIERS” - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board will host the 8th Annual “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Lacrosse Benefit Game at the Town of Oyster Bay’s John J. Burns Park, located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. This year’s round-the-clock event begins on the morning of July 13th at 9:00am and continues non-stop for 24 hours until July 14th at 9:00am. The event benefits veterans and active duty military personnel.
