Scholars at the Long Island Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) regularly augment their studies with fieldtrips and lessons that help them apply what they are learning in real, hands-on ways. One such experience was their recent trip to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City.

P-TECH scholars were given an exclusive museum tour by the Cradle’s Competitions Coordinator Kerri MacKay. The teens were encouraged to interact with the exhibits in a compelling lesson on the history of aerodynamics and rocketry.

They also enjoyed a private viewing of the museum’s planetarium show in the immersive JetBlue Sky Theater.

Afterward, the scholars applied their problem solving skills in a practical workshop, conducted by museum Academic Coordinator Rick Angler.

In a special activity designed to increase scholars’ science and engineering knowledge, the teens were required to work collaboratively to apply mechanical engineering concepts.

The scholars experienced the direct effects of the mechanics of energy - how it’s generated, stored and moved - by applying the principles of potential and kinetic energy.

“One of P-TECH’s goals is to consistently offer our scholars opportunities to challenge themselves and improve their knowledge,” said Gene Silverman, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs.

“Dynamic lessons such as those offered by the Cradle of Aviation reinforce the skills scholars are developing in the classroom, through engaging and meaningful experiences that fundamentally support what they are learning.”

Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation.

Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely.

Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour.

Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush.

Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t.

And then came the crackling,

subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object.

Misery. Pure misery.

And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour.

Let’s cross that one off the bucket list. {For those inquiring readers wishing to know the status of Buddy, my betta fish, I am happy to report that he recently celebrated his four-month birthday and is still swimming maniacal laps around his bowl.}

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL - Massapequa’s Strawberry Festival 2015 was a great success in spite of the rain. The Historical Society of Massapequa hosted the annual event to raise awareness in the community and remind residents of the history that Massapequa holds. All local vendors were welcome, as long as they were selling handmade or home-made items. Fresh strawberries were brought in by the case from Mattituck for visitors to purchase, and a banjo group played, filling the air with the sounds of summer in the country.

National Cancer Survivors Day is a global day of celebration that takes place each June. Despite progress made treating many forms of cancer, collectively the disease remains the second most common cause of death in the U.S. “Cancer care at Stony Brook is advancing rapidly, and we are determined to remain on the cutting-edge of treatment to cure many forms of cancer as we look to the future,” said Samuel Ryu, MD, Deputy Director, Clinical Affairs, and Chair of Radiation Oncology at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. “Our Center is assembling ever-increasing teams of physicians and scientists to tackle the difficult issues of conquering cancer – teams that work together at the basic science level, translational

research, and by launching new clinical trials.”

During the event introduction, Dr. Ryu said that the growth of clinical care and research at the Cancer Center is best illustrated by the coming Medical and Research Translation (MART) building. The MART, slated to be a 245,000 square foot, eight story facility, will be devoted to cancer research and care and house an expanded

Livestrong President and CEO. “Talking to many of you inspires me, and seeing the commitment that Stony Brook has in its mission to cure cancer should inspire all of you and future patients treated here.”

Ulman is a national cancer survivorship advocate. After overcoming chondrosarcoma during his sophomore years in college and malignant melanoma twice since, in 1997 he founded the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. This non-profit organization provides support, education, and resources to young adults, their families and friends who are affected by cancer.

Stony Brook patients such as Maritza McGee, 45, an acute myeloid leukemia patient who received a bone marrow transplant, and Carmen Cali, 62, a patient treated for multiple myeloma for 10 years who has undergone two bone marrow transplants, stood out as rays of hope for the many Stony Brook patients still undergoing treatment.

McGee, Cali and the hundreds of other survivors enjoyed the day, the comradery Cancer Center with its outpatient services. and unity they all shared, and the outdoor festivities “The upbeat energy here at Stony Brook and the vision for all – survivors, family, friends, and the Stony Brook of the Cancer Center leadership is really quite amazing,” Cancer Center physicians, nurses and staff. said keynote speaker Doug Ulman, a three-time cancer survivor, President and CEO of Pelotonia, and former

I spent a lifetime probing and searching For things about which the critiques sing, Like fantasies, facts truth or lie; So for today, I chose the Fourth of July.

Around the world I many times flew, Skimming the firmament when gray turned to blue.

In many places I have been, The Seven Wonders I have seen.

I socialized with the poor and the rich, Visited the Taj Mahal and the London Bridge.

Year after year on Independence Day, I joined into the cheers and firework play.

Thus again I hope to elevate your feeling, Cause melodious chants to hit the ceiling.

I want to relay the written word just right, Pass on positive ideas that spread delight.

The tears ran streaming down my face; they almost filled the place.
