he Wantagh School District’s elementary schools were a sea of red, white and blue as Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh students celebrated Flag Day on June 14th.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the American flag in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. At each school, there were patriotic speeches and performances by the bands and choruses, as well as the raising of the flag.

Swimming into Summer Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum.

Kudos to you all for seeing things my way!

On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress?

Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”

and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning?

This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup.

I know it only means one thing – bath time.

At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state.

But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly

shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so.

Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human.

Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again!

teacher Nancy O’Connor, students enrolled in the eighth-grade business management course were required to participate in a final project called “My Business Idea!” The students worked as sole proprietors or formed a partnership, corporation or nonprofit organization with fellow classmates. The individual teams determined the business idea, name, logo and slogan, and startup costs and funding were researched. The students also created a website and completed a SWOT analysis to determine the company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and defined their target market and competition.

During the Entrepreneurial Challenge

in June, also called the Shark Tank Challenge, students delivered a PowerPoint presentation detailing their companies to a panel of judges from local businesses. Included in their presentations were business cards, the description of a grandopening event and links to a charity organization.

“These Shark Tank Challenge projects have brought a significant amount of innovation and enthusiasm to the business management class,” Ms. O’Connor said.

“The students not only gained knowledge about the free enterprise system, they learned they can own their own business as long as they are willing to work hard and passionately.”

Lobster harvesting is a major contributor to the nation’s $1.8 billion commercial fishing industry. The mightiest lobsters can grow to be four-feet in length, and

weigh upwards of 40 pounds. A lobster’s age is determined by counting growth rings hidden away in areas of the body including the stomach.

Three out of every four Americans say they enjoy a lobster dish at least once a month. Restaurant surveys on Long Island indicate lobster is one of the most popular items on the menu, particularly each spring and summer. Peter’s Clam Bar purchases lobster and other seafood from local

fishermen who sail Long Island waters in search of the freshest catch.

The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that the high school’s varsity baseball team secured the New York State Class A Championship title on June 12th with a 6-5 victory over Williamsville East High School, held at Union-Endicott High School in Endicott, New York. This is Wantagh’s first state baseball title since 1998.

Jennifer Keane, director of health, physical education and athletics, said winning the

championship title was the result of the team never losing focus and skilled coaching by Keith Sachs and assistant coach Mike Ninivaggi.

“Not only did the athletes put in the work, they came together as a team, never lost focus and set their sights on the end goal,” Keane said.

Prior to garnering the state title, the team defeated Queensbury 2-1 in the state semifinal game, a team that boasted an undefeated season. Earlier this month, Wantagh also

won the Long Island Class A title, having defeated Mount Sinai High School, and the Nassau County Class A Championship title on June 1, having defeated Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy High School.

Flying Their Flags The Wantagh School District’s elementary schools were a sea of red, white and blue as Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh students celebrated Flag Day on June 14th.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the

American flag in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress and is a time to reflect on the importance of this symbol.

At each of the schools, there were patriotic speeches and performances by the bands and choruses, as well as the raising of

the flag on the schools’ flagpoles.

will be executed by design firm Danita Otruba Architect of Westbury, and are anticipated to be completed summer 2017.

The headquarters will receive much-needed structural updates

including a new roof, windows and insulation which will provide overall cost savings on utilities, security and technology system renovations.

Additionally, the interior will undergo several

cosmetic changes, including updates to the kitchen area, a redesign of the existing Girl Scout Shop, a new Volunteer Resource Center and a showcase for the council’s “Living History” collection

of Girl Scout uniforms and treasures from several decades. The changes to the first floor will also add much needed space for meetings and programs.

Troop leaders, Girl Scouts, parents and

volunteers can visit the leased property at 325 Duffy Avenue in Hicksville beginning mid-July 2016.

Are You Man Enough to Be a Girl Scout?

In honor of Father’s Day, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) are commending the fathers who make being a Girl Scout possible and invite other Dads to step up to the challenge. Our male Troop Leaders, council members, Cookie Dads and behindthe-scenes volunteers are crucial to the success of each Girl Scout experience.

The organization creates openings for fathers to be a part of their daughter’s lives and strengthen their relationships with one another through participation in numerous activities. We encourage fathers to be involved and on this holiday, thank the unsung heroes who load the camping gear into the truck, build “bridges” for our bridging ceremonies and lend a hand when needed.

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County considers itself lucky to know numerous fathers interested in volunteering their time to contribute to their daughter’s, and other

Girl Scout’s, experiences.

These include Angelo Angelico and Jon Wang of Bellmore, NY; Jeff Strauber of East Meadow, NY; Wayne Goldenberg of Jericho, NY; and Clyde Riggins Jr. of Baldwin, NY; who are committed to further carrying the spirit of the Girl Scouts. When a group of hopeful Girl Scouts were in risk of being put on a waiting list to find a Troop Leader, Angelo and Jon stepped up to the plate as co-Leaders.

“My involvement started when my wife asked if I wanted to enroll Ella in Daisy’s, and I said sure, what is a Daisy?” said Angelo. “When I attended the recruitment meeting I was told that due to an extensive waiting list in the area, Ella wouldn’t be placed in a Troop for about a year. Once I realized the opportunity in front of me I became a Troop Leader and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

“This experience has made me realize how precious the time I spend

with my daughters is. More importantly, my daughters know that they can count on me as both a parent and a leader,” said Jon. “I enjoy knowing all the skills I am able to teach my daughters through the Girl Scout program will serve them well as they grow up.”

However, the ways in which Dads can contribute to the success of the Girl Scouts is not limited to becoming Troop Leaders.

The seamless execution of the numerous events and activities would not be possible without the support of hundreds of men who volunteer throughout the year. Retired New York City Police Office Jeff Strauber utilizes his expertise to play a crucial role in event logistics, such as directing traffic at the recent GSNC “Go the Distance” Walkathon.

“I enjoy working with the Girl Scouts and witnessing it help young girls build their self-esteem and develop problem solving skills,” said Strauber. “I appreciate that Girl Scouts

is a healthy outlet for girls to work on their self-image and eventually allows them to become wonderful young women. I always jump at the opportunity to be involved with anything that my girls are a part of; it is a rewarding experience to see how much Girl Scouts has positively influenced them, and it is great to see that they are all still involved in one way or another.”

When GSNC Dads are not leading a Troop or volunteering at events, they are raising the world’s next greatest entrepreneurs by assisting with annual Girl Scout Cookies® sales. The GSNC is lucky to have fathers like Wayne Goldenberg who was more than willing to help his daughter succeed in selling over 650 Girl Scout Cookies™ for a good cause. Wayne’s daughter Alexia, along with her troop, was able to use funds collected from the sales to donate three “Buddy Benches,” which serve as common meeting places

for kids to make friends on the playground.

“It was very inspiring to watch Alexia work towards her goal of selling enough cookies to purchase and donate ‘Buddy Benches’ to the three Jericho School District elementary schools, “ shared Wayne.

“She was highly motivated.

I enjoyed supporting my daughter and offering her guidance.

Then after someone on the ‘Massapequa Moms’ group on Facebook challenged me to wear a Thin Mint Cookie costume, I did not hesitate. Alexia was able to boost sales by an additional 150 boxes and we personally delivered the cookies together, me in full costume.”

The GSNC has the opportunity to watch Girl Scouts grow and develop from a Daisy to an Ambassador alongside their parents.

she has been involved in the GSNC. As a supportive father, he has continuously volunteered his time to help with activities, and is known in his office as the “go-to-guy” during Girl Scout Cookie™ Season.

“I have always been willing to offer any type of support, whether it has been helping prepare for meetings, transporting girls to activities or helping with cookie sales,” shares Clyde. “I have enjoyed watching my daughter grow and exhibit the confidence she has gained from her journey as a Girl Scout. I’ve witnessed her take risks and lead events and discussions with younger girls. Girl Scout’s has encouraged her to find her voice and speak up for herself and those are skills she will carry into adulthood.”
