It’s A Three-Peat For Seaford Music Program

The Seaford School District has been honored for its outstanding commitment to music education with the Best Communities for Music Education designation for the third consecutive year. The distinction was bestowed on 830 school districts across the country this year by the National Association for Music Merchants Foundation. The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, the Seaford Music Department answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class

participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

The NAMM Foundation cites research into music education that demonstrates educational, cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music. Everyday listening skills are stronger in musically trained children. Later in life, individuals who took music lessons as children show stronger neural processing of sound. Other benefits include conflict resolution and teamwork skills, and the ability to give and receive constructive criticism.

“This honor is achieved

due to the driving force from music educators, administrators and parents working together for the common good of music education for the students,” Dr. Anthony Romeo, the district’s lead teacher for music.

The Seaford music faculty is very proud of this achievement. The district’s music teachers, who are key to this success, include Daniel Krueger and Richard Adams at Seaford Manor Elementary School, Pamela Brinkman and Charlotte Loake at Seaford Harbor Elementary School, Barbara Sherwin, Amanda Ferguson and Nicholas Coacci at Seaford Middle School, and Dr. Romeo, Yvonne Bendzlowicz and Mr. Christopher Coniglio at Seaford High School.

The Seaford Middle School library is getting a makeover. While the overall look isn’t changing that much, the fiction section is being completely overhauled and books will now be sorted by genre.

Librarian Samantha Riebling said she is emulating the bookstore model, where people can search for a story by its category. Previously, fiction books were sorted alphabetically by author’s last names.

“No one is coming in and looking for a book by an author whose last name starts with an H,” she said. “But they might be looking for a mystery or a fantasy story. Students want to read what they like. Now they can walk in and walk right to the section that they want.”

Ms. Riebling said that she visited other local school libraries that have this model and saw how successful it is. The reorganization, which is nearing completion, has been a monthslong process and required a lot of

relabeling and relocating of books. Already, the horror and suspense section has been the most popular.

According to Ms. Riebling, about half of the library’s 12,000-book collection is fiction. The non-fiction books will continue to be classified by subject.

The library is a popular lunchtime destination, as students come to play cards and board games, and many check out a book on their way out. Students also visit the library with their classes, where they have an opportunity to take out books after working on an assignment. This year, sixth grade social studies classes went there for virtual field trips about ancient

civilizations, seventh grade English classes visited once a month for literary discussions and eighth graders used the library for their Shakespeare research projects.

“Our goal is to encourage more independent reading,” Ms. Riebling said. “We want to help our students easily find what they’re truly interested in reading.”

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

As our nation celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, the team at America’s VetDogs will be nearing the completion of its latest two-week, in-residence training program at its Long Island campus, where another class of veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities will receive their life-changing and life-saving service dogs.

The non-profit organization trains and provides service and guide dogs for our nation’s heroes in all 50 states and beyond, all from their national headquarters in Smithtown. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the organization o ers assistance dogs for those with physical, emotional and other less apparent disabilities. The canines may serve as service dogs, guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs and military facility dog, amongst others. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months.

“The 4th of July is a time of celebration and, for us, it’s a time to remember the sacrifice so many of the people we serve made –and continue to make – to protect and defend our freedoms,” said John Miller, president and CEO, America’s VetDogs. “While our nation comes together at parades, ceremonies, and backyard parties to commemorate America’s independence, right here in Smithtown America’s VetDogs will be continuing our work to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and their own independence.”

It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one service or guide dog, yet the organization provides its services at absolutely no charge, including a lifetime of aftercare support for their graduates after they return home. However, none of America’s VetDogs’ mission can be accomplished without donors, sponsors and volunteers. Every e ort made from generous individuals is greatly appreciated and never goes unnoticed.

Free Pool Safety Seminar Offered By Town And Catholic Health

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, members of the Town Board and Catholic Health are partnering to offer residents and non-residents a Free Pool Safety Seminar on Friday, July 7, 2023 at Syosset-Woodbury Park. Families are encouraged to attend as children under the age of 15 make up more than 78 percent of pool submersion injuries in the United States annually, with 67 percent of them including children under the

age of three. Pre-registration is not required for this event.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Nothing is more important than the safety of our children, and to improve pool safety we offer this seminar to with the goal of saving lives through public education and awareness. We want you to have lots of fun in the sun while always be prepared to respond to emergencies.”

Seaford Student Honored For Outstanding Achievement

Avenue School, earned the prestigious George Farber Outstanding Student

Award this year. The award celebrates a variety of Rory’s remarkable

attributes including passion, perseverance, enthusiasm, outstanding character, scholarship and a willingness to help others. Board members, administrators, staff and family were on hand to celebrate at a special ceremony earlier this spring.

Rory is an exemplary student who works hard every day, and who comes to class full of enthusiasm and ready to learn. He is determined and diligent, both in school and at home, and his dedication to his studies has enabled him to make great progress at Willet Avenue. He excels at mathematics and reading, but he also has a passion for exploring nature and loves being outdoors.

Rory truly enjoys working in the school’s community garden. He assists with planting and

watering the crops, and helps to keep the garden area clean. He is also a vital member of the school supply delivery program. He picks up packages from the stockroom, then independently navigates the halls, carefully reading the classroom numbers, to deliver each package to its proper destination.

“Rory is a gentle, caring and compassionate individual who is the first one to help out his fellow students when they are in need. Everyone who knows him describes him as a happy person with a sweet personality that makes him a joy to be around,” said his award nominator. “Rory is an excellent student who really works hard each and every day. He comes to class each day eager to learn and ready to go. He is wonderful to teach and we are lucky to have him.”

“Not only do these students demonstrate the very best of Nassau BOCES, each of them has also shown the true spirit of George Farber,” said James Widmer, Deputy Superintendent. “They all have passion, determination, enthusiasm, outstanding character, scholarship, and willingness to help others. Their collective stories are an inspiration to us all.”

For the past 16 years, outstanding students have been earning this award in memory of former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students was surpassed only by his love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009.

Councilman Lou Imbroto reminds residents that Town sanitation and S.O.R.T. Recycling collection schedules will be modified for the observance of Independence Day on Tuesday, July 4th.

“There will be no

sanitation or recycling collection on Tuesday, July 4th for residents who normally receive Town service,” Councilman Imbroto said. “Residents who generally receive Town pickup on Tuesdays will have their collections done the next day, Wednesday,

July 5th.”
