A New Book Club For Those Affected By Breast Cancer
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is starting a lifeaffirming book club called the Warriors Book Club that is open to anyone affected by breast cancer. The group will zoom on Monday, July 10 , from 7 pm to 8 pm.
The first book to be read is “The Getaway Girls” by
Dee MacDonald, a funny romantic comedy about love, friends, family and self-discovery. Three very different women all agree it’s about time they had a holiday to remember… and they do as they set forth in Europe in a used recreational vehicle.
The Warriors Book Club is the brainchild
of Adelphi Hotline Volunteer Lynne Borah from Plainview. Borah, a 20-year breast cancer survivor, says “Reading is my favorite getaway,” which is why she decided to start the book club to help others escape from any difficulties they are having.

Give The Gift Of Life By Donating Blood On June 27th
With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, June 27th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.
Councilman Labriola stated, “Blood supplies are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our
blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.”
Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is
ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.
Councilman Labriola added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood at the Hicksville Athletic Center, is an incredible way for all of us to pitch in and give back, to help ease the burden of our Healthcare Heroes as they continue to provide lifesaving efforts.”

Seaford Top Pair Place High Value On Education
From a young age, getting into a good college was a goal for Seaford High School seniors Paige Burch and Myles Schnaier. That drive to succeed earned them the top rankings in the Class of 2023, Principal Nicole Schnabel announced. Paige, with a weighted grade point average of 106.64, is the valedictorian. Myles earned salutatoriain honors with a GPA of 105.80. Although college decisions are a few months away for them, they know they have a lot of options. Paige plans to select a school where she can major in biochemistry, with a goal of working in the scienti c research eld, and Myles is looking to study biology on a pre-medicine track.
As Seaford High School, both students took advantage of the academic, athletic and extracurricular offerings. By the time she graduates, Paige will have taken 15 Advanced Placement courses. She is also on track to earn an AP Capstone Diploma and is pursuing the Seal of Biliteracy. Her favorite courses have included Statistics, AP Research and Science Research. This year’s science research topic is the impact of parabens on aquatic life, while last year she studied valley fever and how the fungal disease is affected by the environment and climate change. Myles completed seven AP courses by the end of his junior year, with another seven in his senior schedule. Classes he enjoyed included AP Biology, AP European History and pre-calculus. He plays trumpet in the high school band, is a member of Books and Bagels, the National Honor Society and varsity soccer team, and played junior varsity baseball and soccer. Community service is important to Myles and he volunteers with the Book Fairies, an organization that distributes new and gently used books to under-resourced communities on Long Island. Paige plays eld hockey, is general chair for Model Congress, president of Books and Bagels and historian for the National Art Honor Society. She also is a member of Key Club and the National Honor Society, and is active in the Girl Scouts.
This year’s top two students represent both of Seaford’s elementary schools, as Paige attended Manor and Myles got his start at Harbor.
“It’s just a great honor for me,” Myles said of being named salutatorian. “I’m de nitely humbled by it and it’s something I’ll be proud of for the rest of my life. I’ve always taken my education seriously. I know what I do now is going to pay off in the future.”
Myles said that while he has always studied hard and attended many extra help sessions, he credits this achievement to his teachers, who are extremely helpful and invested in the success of their students.
In addition to her teachers, Paige credits her parents for always inspiring her to do her best and to the valedictorians in the classes before her, who she always looked up to as academic role models. It’s a great feeling, she said, to reach the same milestone.

They may be busy preparing for their futures, but Seaford High School seniors instead took a trip to the past on June 12. The Class of 2023 was saluted by the district’s elementary

For their last day of school before finals, seniors
donned their green and white caps and gowns and boarded those big yellow buses. The destination was their former elementary school, with one group of students headed to
Manor and the other group traveling south to Harbor.
About 45 minutes later, they reconvened at Seaford Middle School, the place that brought them together for the first time
as sixth graders. Students and teachers lined the hallways to applaud, cheer and give high-fives. The soon-to-be graduates went in the front entrance, made a pass through the
hallways, then out the back door for the walk across the field to return to the high school, where they enjoyed a picnic and yearbook signing.

PSEG Foundation To Grant $1 Million To Local Organizations
The PSEG Foundation announced the 2023 request for proposals for the annual Neighborhood Partners Program, with grants available ranging from $500 to $15,000. Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations in New Jersey and Long Island, New York are encouraged to apply. Applications will be evaluated and grants awarded based on demonstrated program effectiveness, depth, breadth and overall alignment with the PSEG Foundation strategic pillars, which are environmental sustainability, social justice and equity and economic empowerment.
“We’re pleased to make $1 million in grant funding available through our very popular Neighborhood Partners Program, where we see local heroes making a difference in the lives of others throughout PSEG’s service
territories,” said Calvin Ledford Jr., PSEG Foundation president. “We seek to partner with people who have a track record of success and who present viable plans for addressing today’s largest challenges including those of sustainability, equity, social justice and economic empowerment.”
Last year the PSEG Foundation awarded more than 300 Neighborhood Partners Program grants. For example, America’s Grow-a-Row received funding for its fresh produce initiative. This program provides nutritious produce to regional hunger relief agencies and at local free farmers markets in communities that lack reliable access to affordable fresh produce. In Long Island, Habitat for Humanity used its grant for the Reuse, Reduce, Repurpose Program to help
divert more than 3 million pounds of waste from local landfills that were repurposed and sold at a fraction of the cost to benefit its clients, families and the local community.
“PSEG is the perfect example of corporate social responsibility in action. Their commitment to feeding those faced with hunger and food insecurity runs deep throughout their organization. From the countless hours PSEG employees have invested by volunteering in the fields, to helping underwrite a portion of our farming expenses,” said Chip Paillex, president and founder, America’s Grow-a-Row. “We could not be more grateful for PSEG and the PSEG Foundation’s support that allowed us to positively impact approximately 100,000 people in need last year.”
