Serendipity: A Special Creative Forum For Breast Cancer Patients, Survivors And Caregivers On July 11

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a free guided art adventure for breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers to light their creative sparks by making art through a variety of different techniques and mediums. The in-person workshop will be held on Tuesday,

July 11 from 10 am to 11:30 am at Adelphi University in Garden City (room details will be provided upon registration).

“Participants are encouraged to experiment with art and trust their imaginations,” says Kimberly Newman, BFA, the Marketing and Communications

Coordinator, for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, who will be offering a variety of different techniques and mediums during this forum.

Co-facilitating is social worker Angela M. Papalia, LMSW, Assistant Director, Adelphi Breast Cancer Program who says that learning and practicing

different breathing exercises will be part of the session. “These exercises will teach you how to disengage from distracting thoughts and sensations,” she says. Breathing exercises have many health benefits such as improving immunity, calming down anxiety, increasing sleep quality, improving

cardiovascular health, aiding in concentration, reducing inflammation, strengthening lungs and more.

The Junior Coalition of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer, the Marilyn Lichtman Foundation and Northwell Health Cancer Institute are co-sponsors.

Registration is required to attend this free forum and space is limited to 40 participants. Art supplies will be provided for all exercises.

“Entertainment For A Summer Evening” At The Seaford Public Library

The Seaford Public Library takes great pride in presenting its Summer 2023 “Entertainment for a Summer Evening,” our very popular series of outdoor concerts. In addition to this, we have our night time Outdoor Movie. All concerts are in partnership with the Lions Club of Seaford, the Seaford Chamber of Commerce, the Seaford Wellness Council and the Seaford Knights of Columbus Memorare Council #3476. For the tenth time, the series has a corporate sponsor, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Over two decades the Seaford Library has been offering up top notch, quality musical entertainment from artists and performers from all musical genres including classic rock, doo-wop, country, and everything in-between. The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and successfully reduced the waiting time to receive a service dog from 2-3 years to 9-12 months!

The journey their service dogs go on is quite fascinating and in-depth. These dogs undergo specific training to make sure they can help others to the best of their ability.

America’s VetDogs works primarily with Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers or a mix of the two breeds. They breed the dogs themselves to ensure the canines have the lineage, intelligence and temperament to excel in helping others. Each newborn pup then resides in their Puppy Nursery for about 8 weeks until the future service dog is placed in its innovative Prison Puppy Program.

Through this special program, America’s VetDogs has partnered with more than a dozen correctional facilities along the East Coast. Carefully selected incarcerated individuals are paired with a puppy and, with support from America’s VetDogs’ expert advisors, teach the puppy good house manners, basic obedience and rudimentary service dog tasks. In many facilities, incarcerated veterans are participating in the program.

On the weekends, the puppies reside with Weekend Puppy Raisers, which typically live within 30 miles of a correctional facility. These volunteers teach house

manners and socialization skills, while also attending group obedience classes.

Puppy Raisers provide loving homes and care for each furry friend until they’re old enough to move onto the next step.

After about 14 to 16 months, the puppies return to America’s VetDogs’ Smithtown location for formal service dog training. Each get assigned to a Certified Service Dog Instructor, who will work with the dog for the next 3-4 months, teaching advanced tasks and customizing its training to match the needs of its future handler. A dog can be trained to pick up dropped items, open doors, press pushplates on power-assisted doors, perform nightmare interruption, provide balance and stability and more.

When a dog is deemed “class-ready,” the chosen handler is invited to a 2 week on-campus class in America’s VetDogs’ newly renovated student residence to complete the training, where they will learn how to work with the dog to become a new team for independence.

Post Commander William Hoehn. Elected officials Michael Giangregario, Christopher Carini, and Kate Murray were present as well as a representative of State Senator Steve Rhoads. Congratulations to these two veteran centenarians.

Seaford Junior Earns Summer Science Internship

Seaford High School

junior Faith Schaefer will explore biomedical research this summer at Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. Faith was awarded a six-week internship from the Advancing Women in Science and Medicine association. The program aims to advance career opportunities for females

in science. Faith received one of two 2023 AWSM/ Girl Scouts Summer Internship awards and was recently recognized at the 13th annual awards luncheon at Lincoln Center. She is very active in the scouts and has already received her Bronze and Silver Awards.

This summer, she will join a team studying neurodevelopment

and neuroimmunology disorders. During the internship, which is five days a week, Faith will get to work alongside doctors and other health professionals. Faith is enrolled in Seaford High School’s Advanced Placement Research class, which is the second part of the AP Capstone program. She looks forward to the internship experience as

she considers pursing a research-focused career.
