Town To Host Collection Drive On World Blood Donor Day In recognition of World Blood Donor Day and in an effort to help hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, June 14th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the pandemic and are critically needed for local

hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives.

Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped.

World War II Weekend At The Museum Of American Armor Will Observe The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank “Calling All Sherman Veterans For A Tank Side Dedication Ceremony” The 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe will be the featured armor vehicle during this year’s World War II Encampment Weekend at the Museum of American Armor inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, Long Island, on Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank veterans to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary and participating in an oral histories project that memorializes their experiences.

In addition to the Sherman, the weekend will feature military reenactments presented by the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and a parade of operational armor vehicles that comprise the museum’s extensive collection.

The Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish

stated, “The Armor Museum continues to offer a powerful presentation that keeps alive the legacy of our nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given all of us.”

Michael Sapraicone, Senior Armor Museum Trustee said, “This museum is a unique commitment by public and private sectors to preserve and present a seminal chapter in the history of our world that is still defining current events around the world.”

Little Flower strives to meet the immediate needs of children entering foster care by partnering with dedicated foster parents who bring experience and skills in supporting children experiencing trauma. Potential foster parents undergo a thorough application and screening process, complete training, and participate in a home study before becoming a foster parent. The Little Flower team provides ongoing support and services to foster parents to ensure they can create the most nurturing environment for the foster children in their care.

Additionally, Little Flower partners with foster parents and children’s families to support the children while their family receives the support and services they need to safely parent upon the child’s return from foster care. They also work with extended family to find relatives or other permanent homes for children who cannot safely return to their parents. This

For children requiring specialized care, Little Flower offers a Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home (TFBH) program based on their Wading River campus that works with children placed in foster care through Nassau or Suffolk County.

Therapeutic foster parents are provided with additional training and certification to best care for the specialized needs of the foster children in their home.

In addition to providing temporary care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, foster parents work closely with the organization’s social work team and the child’s parents in support of family reunification or permanency planning and ensure children are available to attend family visits. Foster parents model positive behavior, provide guidance and positive experiences, as well as support educational, dental, medical, and mental health needs of the child.

Little Flower is proud to partner with such compassionate individuals willing to help children in need thrive and reach their full potential. Vivian M., a foster parent with Little Flower for more than 13 years, shared that she became a foster parent because she “loves children and wanted to make a difference.”

Seaford Students Get Tips From A Safety Expert From treating others with kindness and respect to keeping themselves safe online, retired Nassau County police officer Sharon Galvin had lots of helpful tips for students during a recent visit to Seaford Middle School.

Officer Galvin met with each grade during assemblies throughout the day. She discussed bullying and cyberbullying, including potential legal consequences, and told

students that they should tell an adult if being bullied. Additionally, she encouraged them to be upstanders by stepping in if they see bullying taking place.

“Kindness starts with you,” she said to Seaford’s sixth, seventh and eighth graders.

In terms of their own safety and security, Officer Galvin reminded students that they should never share personal information

online and recommended that they keep any social media profiles private.

During advisory classes at the end of the day, students discussed the lessons from Officer Galvin’s presentation.

Improved technology and the growing popularity of fitness applications, electronic wearables and step counters have made counting steps an easy way to count health benefits, as noted through a growing body of scientific research. A study presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle & Cardiometabolic Health Conference 2021 (EPI), found that: •Study participants who took more steps in short spurts lived longer, regardless of how many steps they had in longer, uninterrupted bouts. The benefits leveled off at about 4,500 steps a day in short spurts.

•Compared to no daily steps, each initial increase of 1,000 steps a day was associated with a 28% decrease in death during the follow-up period.

•A 32% decrease in death was noted in participants who took more than 2,000 steps daily in uninterrupted bouts.

Middle-aged people who walked the most steps-perday had a 43% lower risk of diabetes and a 31% lower risk of high blood pressure, compared to those with the fewest steps, according to research presented at the Association’s 2020 EPI Conference. For women in the study, each 1,000-step interval resulted in a 13% lower risk of obesity, and those with the highest step count were 61% less likely

Pitfalls To Avoid Falling Into Debt High consumer debt can compromise individuals’ financial futures and have an adverse effect on their overall health. Debt has long been an issue that threatens individuals’ well-being, but the good news is that certain debts seem to be on the decline.

According to the “Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit” that was released in May 2021 by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, credit card balances were $157 billion lower by the end of the first quarter of 2021 than they had been at the end of 2019. Authors of the report credit that decline to paydowns by buyers and reduced consumption opportunities related to the pandemic.

Individuals who want to avoid debt can keep an eye open for these pitfalls.

• Retail credit cards: Many retailers offer their own credit cards. Consumers may be enticed to sign up for such cards by the opportunity for instant, and often significant, savings. For example, a home improvement store may offer an immediate 25 percent discount to customers who sign up for a store credit card and use the card to make a purchase. As enticing as such savings can be, consumers should recognize that a recent study by CreditCards. com found that the average retail credit card APR is 25.9 percent.

That’s more than 6 percent higher than a general purpose credit card. Consumers who cannot pay balances in full each month could end up paying much more in interest if they use retail credit cards instead of general purpose cards.

• Too many accounts: A 2019 study from the credit reporting agency Experian found that the average American has four credit cards. Though many consumers can effectively manage that many cards, the more cards an individual has, the easier it can be to lose track of spending. More cards also means a greater potential for more debt, as each card has its own limit that is unrelated to the limits on other cards.

• Bonus hunting: Another pitfall to avoid is the temptation to use credit cards instead of cash in an effort to accumulate more travel miles or cash back bonuses.

Consumers should aspire to use cash over credit whenever possible.

Doing so ensures consumers are not spending money they don’t have, which is one of the most common ways that individuals build significant consumer debt.

• Failure to budget: A budget is the most effective way for individuals to gain control of their spending. That lesson seems to resonate more with young people than older men and women. A 2019 poll from Debt.com found that 74 percent of consumers between the ages of 23 and 38 use a budget to govern their spending, while only 67 percent of consumers between the ages of 39 and 54 use a budget.

A failure to budget can increase the risk of spending impulsively and make it hard for consumers to see what’s coming in and what’s going out. That’s a recipe for accumulating debt.

Avoiding certain pitfalls can help consumers avoid accumulating debt that can adversely affect their financial futures.

Town Hazardous Material & Homeowners Cleanup Days Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announce the Town’s S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) and Homeowners Cleanup Days for the month of June.

Residents can drop off materials at the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex, located at 101 Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage.

Homeowners Cleanup Day - Saturday, June 11th from 8:30am – 4pm: collects nonhazardous waste, including: air conditioners; all e-waste; campers; boats and boat trailers

(proof of ownership required oil, gas, other fluids and batteries removed); clean, broken concrete; large metal items; propane tanks and propane torches; tires; and yard waste.

Students And Special Guests Make Connections A long-standing tradition returned at Seaford Manor Elementary School on May 6, as grandparents and other relatives stopped by for Special Persons Day. The event was held in person for the first time since the pandemic, and both children and their guests were delighted to spend some time together.

“You are very special people in the lives of our students,” Principal Debra Emmerich told the visitors, adding that the children wanted to show their appreciation to their treasured family members.

Throughout the day, two classes at a time came down to the gym and students welcomed their

special guests. Children performed “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” and recited a poem about grandparents. They did yoga and mindfulness exercises, and concluded the visit by reading together.
