The American Heart Association is seeking applicants for the 2018 Northeast Health Equity Consortium Innovation Challenge, a grant-based initiative to identify innovative, clearly-defined solutions to improve the health and well-being in urban communities in New England, New York and New Jersey.

C o m m u n i t y environments play a crucial role in health outcomes. People living just five miles apart can have a difference in life expectancy of more than 20 years.

That’s why the American Heart Association - the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke - is seeking fresh ideas to impact health.

The Innovation Challenge will provide

funding to the best creative solutions that increase healthy living behaviors, enhance the chain of survival and cultivate community transformation. Successful applicants are expected to use data and/or research to address issues such as inadequate housing, education, access to healthcare, and healthy food access. Candidates must complete an online application by the June 8th deadline.

Finalists are expected to be available to present their project before an audience at the Northeast Health Equity Consortium on June 28th, in Hartford, Conn. Three projects will be selected to receive an $8,000 award. An additional six projects will be invited to attend the conference and be recognized with a $1,000 award.

NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently partnered with National Grid to host a Memorial Day education event for 100 local students from Roosevelt Middle School at the Veterans Memorial located on the plaza of NYCB LIVE. With the support of local Long Island veterans and active duty military, the Roosevelt Middle School students had the opportunity to learn about the branches of the military and Long Island’s service contributions to the United States armed forces.

The Memorial Day education event was a part of the venue’s new community platform NYCB LIVE Cares, which harnesses the power of sports and entertainment to make an impact in the Long Island community.

“The Coliseum serves as

a symbol and pays tribute to those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” said Josh Pruss, Senior Vice President of Global Partnerships for Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment.

“We are proud to work with National Grid on this important event. By introducing local youth to our veterans, we are able to keep their incredible stories alive and honor their commitment to our community and our country.”

During the event, students had the opportunity to visit with the different branches of the military and learn more from active duty service members. Students also sat with local veterans to hear their stories and together created Memorial Day wreaths to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

It comes with Ahi tuna poke, avocado, pickled jalapeños, pickled red onions, pickled red cabbage, sesame Sriracha sprouts and forbidden purple rice ( I opted for romaine and spinach instead of the rice).

I topped this meal with the suggested fire sauce and sesame ginger dressing. If you like heat, I highly recommend the fire sauce; it had an incredible flavor, as well as a nice touch of spice. It was an extremely tasty dish that left me satisfied. I really am looking forward to my next meal at CoreLife Eatery. It truly is the next step in the evolution of dining.

All I know is that dining out and choosing to be healthy have usually been difficult.

The pressure of finding a good option and ultimately settling for something familiar has happened far too often. I enjoy eating my homemade Lean & Green meal (3 servings of vegetables and 5-7 ounces of a lean protein), but trying to find that type of meal while dining out has been challenging. Most fast food restaurants focus on convenience and not nutrition. Nutrition is key to living a healthy lifestyle, and it’s something that I have changed significantly since losing 110 lbs.

Her choreography has been commissioned all over the world for opera, TV programs, theatre productions and by many dance companies. She

founded her own dance school, L’Atelier Centro Creativo de Danza, in 1994 in Argentina, and has maintained an active teaching career ever since.

She currently conducts classes at Peridance Capezio Center, Wagner College and Lehman College. She has written for various dance and arts magazines, and published her first book in 2013, entitled “Unveiling Motion and Emotion.” The book

contains writings in Spanish and English on the importance of dance, community, choreography and dance pedagogy.

“This was an exciting class, because it helped the students discover another character,” said LIHSA Dance Instructor Dina Denis Paolucci. “It’s not just dancing; there’s a deeper meaning to their movements. Ms. Lenzu is a creative being.”

Jumping into June Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind.

I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion.

Being productive is hard work.

And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some

carried over from just prior to the new year, remain. Sure, a few items have made their way into the “done” column; but mostly, the main bullet points stare back from the page, some expanded upon and added to as the months have progressed.

The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore.

Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze.

The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that

incomparable moment of zen, and carry it with you into the other elements of life. Find the beauty in everything, as they say. A flower, a butterfly, a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore…

Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether.

Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that?

And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. Creatures Come Alive Students at Seaford Manor Elementary School are studying animal and insect life cycles as part of the science curriculum.

Each grade is observing a different species including quails in kindergarten, lady bugs in first grade,

butterflies in second grade, frogs in third grades, hermit crabs in fourth grade and mealworms in fifth grade.

Second-grade teacher AnneMarie Motisi explained that her students were excited to watch

their caterpillars turn into butterflies. The inclass observation followed a trip to learn about the butterflies at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center at Jones Beach.

Positive Paintings Project Choose Kind came to Seaford Manor Elementary School in the form of colorful inspirational messages.

On May 19th, about 20 volunteers painted the boys and girls bathrooms in the third- through fifthgrade wing.

Messages included “Why fit in when you were born to stand out,” “Believe in yourself” and “Be the reason someone smiles,” among others. There were also paintings of palm trees, hearts, musical notes, animals and stars.

The project was spearheaded by PTA Vice President Donna Jebaily, and inspired by a group of parents in Arlington, Texas, who painted uplifting messages in the student bathrooms

of an elementary school.

Volunteers for the recent Saturday painting session included current and former Seaford Manor parents as well as high school students, who worked for several hours.

Paint was provided by the district’s facilities department.

When school opened the following Monday, students in grades 3-5 were given a chance to tour the bathrooms and see the messages. Principal Debra Emmerich said that this supports the school’s growth mindset initiative, in which students are encouraged to adopt an “I Can” mentality and to support each other in an effort to create a positive school culture.

Ms. Emmerich shares a

different inspirational message with students every week.

“We’re spreading kindness,” Ms. Jebaily said.

“We want to inspire the children, make them feel good about themselves and make them feel good about others. Seaford should be known as a ‘Choose Kind’ town.”

Ms. Emmerich added that paintings serve as a gift to the fifth-graders, who can use those inspirational messages to create a mindset that will help them succeed in middle school and beyond.

She thanked Ms. Jebaily for bringing the idea to the school, and all the volunteers who gave up a Saturday to paint.

Good as Gold The Seaford High School concert band received a gold rating from the New York State School Music Association at its 2018 Majors Festival on May 22nd at Hofstra University.

This is the first time that the band has received the top designation.

For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut.

Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre.

Operating in a town full of old New York charm like Babylon, Mark and Dylan Perlman, the father/son owners of the venue, could think of no better show with which to kick

off their inaugural season than Guys and Dolls, sponsored by Forerunner Technologies, Inc. The classic musical by Loesser, Swerling & Burrows builds highstakes tension and love between the high-stakes gamblers and other colorful characters created by New York writer Damon Runyon. Night of Literacy Seaford Harbor Elementary School students and staff celebrated reading at Literacy Night on May 24th. Children and their families were invited to participate in a variety of book-centered activities.

As families arrived, they went to a book café in the cafeteria. Children sifted through hundreds of books representing numerous genres that were laid out in

food trays. Teachers helped them find the right book to read along with their parents, grandparents and siblings.

A campfire scene was set up in the gymnasium, giving children a cozy setting to enjoy books with their families and classmates. Some students chose a familiar book, while others decided to explore some new literature.

A historical marker honoring the publisher of Long Island's first newspaper will be unveiled in Sag Harbor on June 6th.

The marker will commemorate David Frothingham, who published Frothingham’s Long-Island Herald from 1791 to 1796.

The marker on Main Street is sponsored by the Press Club of Long Island, which collaborated with the Sag Harbor Historical Society on the project. The marker is being installed by the Village of Sag Harbor.

The dedication ceremony will be held across the street from the historical society office at 174 Main Street at 1 p.m.

The marker is being installed in front of the property where Frothingham published the weekly newspaper.

Mermaid Parade Set

Join for the 36th Annual Mermaid Parade, Saturday June 16th. The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. on West 21st and Surf Avenue and proceeds on Surf Avenue to West 10th, then heads south to the Boardwalk and then west back to its ending point at Steeplechase Plaza on the Boardwalk.

The Mermaid Parade is a unique and artistic celebration of ancient mythology and the honkytonk seaside ritual that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the amusement district. The parade features marching bands, drill teams, floats, antique cars and some 1,500 participants dressed in hand-made costume of mermaids, sea creatures, amusement rides and Neptunes. Several years later Frothingham became entangled in a claim of slander by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. The claim under the terms of the Alien and Sedition Acts stemmed from an article published in a Brooklyn newspaper, the Argus. Frothingham was found guilty and a fine of $100 was imposed,
