Volunteer Opportunity To Help Terrapin Turtles Survive

June 15th Survival Day Includes Beach Cleanup

In an effort to help Terrapin turtles survive predators, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier announces that the Town and Friends of the Bay are co-hosting a Terrapin Survival and Beach Cleanup Day on Saturday, June 15th from 9am to 11am at Centre Island Beach.

“The Town of Oyster Bay joined forces with Friends of the Bay to launch ‘Team Terrapin,’ to help protect the Diamondback Terrapin turtle, as this small species lives in fresh or brackish waters in our Town,” said Councilwoman Maier. “These turtles, which have distinctive diamond-shaped rings covering their shells,

have a near-threatened conservation status and we are working with our environmental partners and local volunteers to help protect this vulnerable species.”

During this Terrapin Survival and Beach Cleanup Day, volunteers will be trained to identify signs of nesting terrapins, briefed on how to collect data and how to deploy protective cages around nests. These structures keep natural predators like raccoons and fox away from the terrapins, thus contributing to their survival. The event features a beach cleanup and tours of nesting sites.

Terrapin monitoring will take place for four to six weeks after

the event and Team Terrapin volunteers will be encouraged to sign up for half-hour or one-hour monitoring shifts during weekdays and weekends. This is an excellent citizen science opportunity for people of all ages. Community service hours and certificates of participation will be provided upon request.

Terrapins can be found along the northern shore of Oyster Bay, especially at Centre Island Beach, with a large population at the head of Mill Neck Creek near Beaver Dam. To register for the event, volunteers should visit https://www. friendsofthebay.org/ volunteer-opportunities. html

Electrical Training Center Graduates Blaze A Trail

The inaugural year of the Electrical Training Center at Seaford High School was a success, and that was evident at the May 23 graduation ceremony for nine seniors.

Each student completed 450 hours of training, including extensive handson electrical work. Seaford became one of only a few schools to offer the program onsite. It allows students to remain on campus for a full day, instead of traveling to a vocational school. Additionally, participants receive their certification in one year instead of two.

Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora said upon her visits throughout the year to the Electrical Training Center, she found students highly engaged in their electrical projects. It has created another path for Seaford Scholars to be successful after high school.

Xavier Arthur, Robert McLaughlin, Leonel Urbina and Krysta Tewksbury from the Electrical Training Center highlighted the success of the program and the options this creates for

graduates. They handed out competition certificates, as well as citations from State Sen. Steve Rhoads.

This year’s graduates are Even Alfago, Justin Cettina, Kyle D’Aniello, Cole DePaolis, James Dillon, Michael LoBasso Jr., John McCormack, Ella Tietz and Michael Wittenstein. The “trailblazers,” as Ms. Schnabel described them, were so successful that word spread and enrollment in the program is expected to grow to 20 students next year.

“It was everything I expected and more,” said Justin, who plans to use his electrical skills to get a job after high school. “I liked the hands-on experience that we all got.”

Ella added that participating in the program helped her establish lifelong connections while Michael Wittenstein said the biggest benefit for him was learning how to adapt and overcome problems.

The Average Individual Is Retiring Earlier Than Many People Might Expect

According to a recent Gallup’s Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average

retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada

reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they

won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

PSEG Long Island Employees Make Donation To Help Protect Power Lines, Wildlife And The Environment From Balloon Hazards

PSEG Long Island employees recently donated $1,000 to Merrick-based Balloon Mission, Inc. a not-for-profit organization that collects discarded balloons in an effort to protect wildlife and the environment.

Balloon safety is important to PSEG Long Island because metallic balloons can be hazardous to overhead electric lines – potentially causing fires and power outages, and also because of the negative effects released balloons can have on the ecosystem.

The donation was made through three of the company’s employee business resource groups (EBRG): GREEN, which

is comprised of employeeadvocates of clean energy alternatives, LI Environmental Guardians, which supports local efforts to help preserve the earth, and the Able EBRG, which champions community organizations that help people with disabilities.

The Association for Children with Down Syndrome (ACDS), which serves families of children and adults with disabilities, has been involved with Balloon Mission’s work. Adults receiving services from ACDS help Balloon Mission by collecting deflated balloons from various balloon drop box locations. The group then practices life skills

by sorting and counting the balloons before they are safely and properly discarded.

Balloon Mission will use the PSEG Long Island donation to educate the public through community outreach and balloon collection programs, and by erecting informational signage at area parks and beaches about the dangers of balloon releases.

"We're so grateful for our partnership with PSEG Long Island,” said Cynthia Seibold, founder and executive director of Balloon Mission, Inc.

“This donation will help fund our recycling and education programs that raise awareness about

the unintended harm balloons have when they're accidentally or purposely let go in the sky. We're pioneering a balloon collection program so people can responsibly enjoy balloons. Once the fun is done, they popn-drop balloons in our bins knowing they're keeping animals and the environment safe, while reducing the risk of fires and power outages."

“We are supporting this wonderful organization that is raising awareness about the potential dangers balloons can have on our environment,” said Anna Keselman, co-president of the PSEG Long Island GREEN EBRG. “We are

inspired by Cynthia’s enthusiasm and her organization’s mission to protect turtles, sea life and our lands.”

PSEG Long Island reminds the public that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. Metallic balloons conduct electricity and resting on an electric line or other electrical equipment could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.

Balloons caught on electrical equipment should be reported to PSEG Long Island at 800-490-0075 so a specially trained crew can safely address the issue.

Pizzerias Donate Over $180,000 To Widow Of Fallen NYPD Officer & Police Charities

Beyond the Badge NY, Project Thank a Cop, and the Silver Shield Foundation. As part of a LI Pizza Strong fundraiser in April, more than 250 participating pizzerias across Long Island donated $5 from every pizza pie they sold on April 17th.

“The only thing Long Islanders love more than our pizza is our police, and we’re thrilled to be part of that encouraging message,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Local pizzerias raised more than $180,000 through the sale of over 31,000 pizzas! We thank

these small businessowners for their commitment to our communities, especially to the families of fallen police officers.”
