The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF)

is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF goes above and beyond to keep the love of music alive and well for students. One of the ways they do so is through aligning with the TeachRock program.

Launched by Stevie Van Zandt and the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese and Bruce Springsteen, this program provides free, standards-aligned resources that use music to help K-12 students succeed in science, math, social studies, language arts and more. Nearly 60,000 educators representing all 50 states are registered at Teachrock.org. The program aspires to:

•Keep the arts in the DNA of school systems

•Empower teachers with a methodology to engage young students

Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Fitness Classes, which return for the summer beginning July 5th at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Fitness classes are co-ed, open to individuals 18 years of age or older, and run for 10 weeks.

Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Cardio Kick-Boxing, Pilates, Ballroom Dancing, Yoga, and Zumba are all very popular programs that provide our residents an outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people. I encourage those looking for a terrific form of aerobic exercise that will help build strength and flexibility to come out and sign up for a 10-week fitness program.”

This summer, residents

can participate in a variety of fitness classes including:

Ballroom Dancing will be held on Saturdays, from 7pm to 8pm, beginning July 8th.

Cardio Kick-Boxing will be held on Thursdays, from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, beginning July 6th.

Pilates will be held on Mondays (Tone & Sculpt), from 8pm to 9pm, beginning on July 10th.

Yoga will be held on Tuesdays, from 7:00pm to 8:00pm, beginning on July 11th, and on Saturdays, from 9am to 10am, beginning on July 8th.

Zumba will be held on Mondays from 6:45pm to 7:45pm beginning July 10th and Wednesdays from 7:30pm to 8:30pm beginning July 5th.

Registration for Town of Oyster Bay residents begins online on Monday, June 5th at 5:00pm at oysterbaytown.

com/portal. You must upload proof of residency (tax or utility bill) and a valid identification card such as a driver’s license.

Town residents also have the option to register in person on Wednesday, June 7th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at the TOB Hicksville Athletic Center (167 S Broadway, Hicksville). Non-residents can register online at oysterbaytown.com/portal beginning June 12th.

Class fees are $60 for residents and $70 for nonresidents. Participants must bring their own mats for yoga and pilates. The schedule is subject to change. Slow And Steady Wins The Race In Business

Most people know the story about the race between the turtle and rabbit. The rabbit is much faster than the turtle, but he gets a little too confident and careless, and ultimately loses to the much slower turtle. My takeaway from that story has always been, “slow and steady wins the race; don’t be the careless rabbit.”

I use the same takeaway in business, and tell everyone who asks for business advice, “it’s better to be the steady turtle than the careless rabbit.”

Running a business today can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Many business owners I meet will do everything they can to make their business a success, but they shouldn’t overextend themselves in the process. This is particularly true when it comes to finances.

One of the keys to

achieving financial stability as a business owner is to regularly review monthly expenses. Doing so can help identify areas where expenses can be cut as well as areas that are generating a positive return for your business (invest more in those areas).

In addition to reviewing your expenses, it’s critical to have reserves (and not just access to credit cards or lines of credit). We never know when the next

downturn may happen or when an emergency expense may occur. If you have 3-6 months’ worth of reserves, you can avoid dipping into personal savings or taking on debt to keep your business afloat.

Don’t worry if you don’t have the reserves in a bank account today; this is where the slow and steady part comes into play. Make regular deposits into a savings account each month; before too long, you will have one month’s worth of reserves, then two months, then it’s six months. The key is to start doing it TODAY!

Having your financial matters in order, namely expenses and reserves, will allow you to spend more time focusing on your customers and employees. If you can give both groups the attention they deserve, you will almost certainly win the race!

Seaford Public Library Budget Vote Passes

The Seaford Public Library’s Budget Vote and Trustee Election was held on May 16, 2023. The proposed Fiscal Year 2023/2024 Budget was passed with 937 Yes votes and 317 No votes. Incumbent Trustee Peter J. Ruffner was reelected for a 5-year term. Board of Trustee, Peter J. A Sweet Way To Say Thanks: Girl Scouts Of Nassau County Send Troops, Local Heroes Over 80,000 Cookie

Packages

Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC), along with DHL Express, recently shipped more than 80,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies® to U.S. military personnel stationed both overseas and on Long Island, in addition to local first responders. Each box was donated by community members who purchased extra Girl Scout Cookies as part of Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s 18th annual Operation Cookie/Hometown Heroes campaign. GSNC, including several Girl Scouts from troops throughout Nassau County, were joined by elected officials and volunteers to help pack a portion of the 80,136 boxes into DHL’s truck, for delivery to locations around the world. The annual program offers a sweet taste of home and shows appreciation to U.S. military members and local doctors, nurses, police officers, ambulance workers

and firefighters.

“Each year, Girl Scouts selling cookies offer buyers the option to donate Girl Scout Cookies to our military troops overseas and local heroes and each year, the result is awe-inspiring,” said Randell Bynum, CEO of GSNC. “It’s amazing to see how many community members want to send their gratitude to our heroes abroad and at home. We hope the cookies bring them comfort and joy. We extend our gratitude to our partner DHL Express and everyone who purchased a package of Girl Scout Cookies for our Operation Cookie/Hometown Heroes campaign. Without you, this would not be possible.”

In 2005, Girl Scouts of Nassau County began its partnership with DHL and started shipping packages of Girl Scout Cookies overseas. Operation Cookie is a testament to the support

community members have for our troops and the program teaches girls that a small action could have a major impact. Since its inception, GSNC and DHL have shipped over 1,000,000 packages to U.S. servicemen and women in places like Kuwait, Bahrain, Poland, Germany, Japan and various military bases across the U.S. and Europe. Deliveries are also made locally to military bases like the Coast Guard stations at Jones Beach, the U.S. Marines base in Garden City and the Midshipmen at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point.

The Hometown Heroes program has a similar impact and recognizes local essential workers and first responders such as doctors, firefighters, and police officers, which is why hospitals, police departments, and a blood bank are part of this year’s roster of Girl Scout Cookies® recipients.

“We are honored to be part of Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Operation Cookie, which gives soldiers far away from their families a ‘taste of home’ as a thank you for their sacrifices,” said Pawel Zagaja, Senior Director of JFK Gateway, DHL Express. “At DHL, our purpose is to

Summer Co-Ed Basketball, Badminton & Volleyball Programs

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invites residents to take part in Summer Athletic Programs for basketball, badminton, and volleyball, beginning on July 6 at the Hicksville Athletic Center. All athletic programs run for 10 weeks, are co-ed, and open to individuals 18 and over.

“The Town’s athletic programs offer a great opportunity for residents to take to the court, improve their skills, and make new friends,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Playing basketball, badminton, and volleyball are the ideal way to have fun while staying active, and I encourage residents to take advantage of these Town programs.”

Basketball will be held on Thursdays from 9:00 PM to 10:30 PM, Saturdays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, and Sundays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, beginning on July 6, 2023. The Basketball program is 10-weeks long and costs $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents.

Badminton will feature two sessions for registrants to choose from. The first session consists of Tuesdays from 8:45 PM to 10:05 PM, Fridays from 8:45 PM to 10:05 PM, and Sundays from 6:10 PM to 8:10 PM. Session 2 consists of Tuesdays from 10:15 PM to 11:35 PM, Fridays from 10:15 PM to 11:35 PM, and Sundays from 8:20 PM to 10:20 PM. The Badminton program is 10-weeks long and costs $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents, with the program scheduled to begin on July 7.

Volleyball will be split into two different sessions. The first session will be held on Mondays from 8:45 PM to 10:05 PM, Wednesdays from 8:45 PM to 10:05 PM, and Saturdays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The second session will take place on Mondays from 10:15 PM to 11:35 PM, Wednesdays from 10:15 PM to 11:35 PM, and Saturdays from 8:20 PM to 10:20 PM.
