Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that residents who are interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness can register for the Town’s popular Co-Ed Fitness Classes at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Classes run for 10 weeks and are offered to individuals 18 years of age or older.

“The Town’s summer co-ed recreational programs have consistently proven to be one of the most popular programs the Town offers each year, as they provide a terrific outlet for our residents to exercise and stay in shape,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Residents can participate in a variety of activities, including Cardio Kickboxing, Yoga, Zumba, Pilates and Ballroom Dancing.”

Each session runs for 10 weeks, beginning in early July. All classes are held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 S. Broadway, Hicksville. Registration is underway for the following classes:

Ballroom Dancing: offered Saturdays, from 7pm to 8pm, beginning July 6th.

Cardio Kick-Boxing: offered Thursdays,

Yoga: Residents can select one of two sessions: Saturdays (beginning July 6th from 9am to 10am), or Tuesdays (beginning July 9th from 8pm to 9pm.

Zumba: Residents can select one of two sessions: Mondays (beginning July 1st from 6:45pm to 7:45pm) or Wednesdays (beginning July 3rd from 7:30pm to 8:30pm).

The United States flag was first imagined after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Continental Congress authorized creation of the first national flag on June 14, 1777. It was decided that the flag should have 13 stripes, alternating red and white, to represent the original 13 colonies, and that the new union be represented by 13 white stars in a blue field to signify a “new constellation.” Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, is most often credited with the original design.

Today there are 50 stars on the flag to represent the 50 states, while the 13 stripes still represent the 13 British colonies that became the first states. While this may be common knowledge, Public Law 94-344, known as the Federal Flag Code, may not be as widely known. The code dictates that the flag is to be treated with respect and proper etiquette. The code is extensive,

· Flags should only be displayed in public from sunrise to sunset, unless the flag can be properly illuminated during darkness. In this instance, it may be displayed at all times.

· When displayed with other flags, such as on a single staff or lanyard, the U.S. flag should be above all other flags. If flags are displayed in a row, the U.S. flag goes to the observer’s left.

· State and local flags are traditionally flown lower than the American flag.

· During marching ceremonies or parades with other flags, the U.S. flag should be to the observer’s left.

· The flag should be displayed at every public institution and at schools during school days.

· When displayed vertically and not on a staff, the union should be on

· The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.

· The flag is often displayed at halfstaff on days of mourning, including Memorial Day. The flag should first be hoisted to the peak for an instant, then lowered to half-staff position, which is half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff.

· On a vehicle, the U.S. flag should be displayed from a staff firmly fixed to the chassis. It should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle.

· The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. It also should never have anything placed on it.

· A flag in poor condition should be destroyed with dignity, preferably by burning. Most American Legion posts and local Boy Scouts troops will have the resources to retire

Seasoned Music Teacher Tapped As Seaford’s New Arts Leader

The Seaford School District announces the appointment of Patrick Kennedy as the director of fine and applied arts. He assumes the role on July 1 and will supervise several academic programs including art, business, family and consumer sciences, music and technology.

Mr. Kennedy comes to Seaford from the Great Neck School District where he has been an elementary instrumental music teacher for six years and has also served as director of summer recreation. Prior to that, he was a band and general music teacher in New York City for three years. He supported the marching band at his alma mater, MacArthur High School in Levittown, as a consultant for nearly a decade.

A co-founder of a nonprofit organization, Chords for Peace, Mr. Kennedy served as its music director from

2016 and 2020. Through that organization, he taught music in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for multiple summers.

Classically trained in percussion, Mr. Kennedy earned his bachelor’s degree in percussion performance and a master’s degree in music education from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, and his educational leadership certificate from the College of St. Rose. His is presently working on his doctorate in educational leadership from Concordia University with a focus on leadership in innovation and continuous improvement.

In Seaford, Mr. Kennedy looks forward to working closely with teachers to establish common goals for their respective departments. He aims to strengthen already robust programs and further increase student participation. Mr. Kennedy sees the fine and applied arts

as disciplines that should be accessible to all students.

“I really like the Seaford community and how

involved everyone is in the departments that I’m overseeing” he said.

“I’m excited to work with

professionals who are passionate about what they do.”

Outside of school Mr.

Kennedy, of Northport, is freelance musician, plays ice hockey and has a 1-yearold son.

Imbroto Announces Pickleball Pickup Game Summer Schedule

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto and the Town Board announced the pickleball pickup game schedule across multiple parks for this summer. With eight sessions scheduled throughout the week, residents of all ages and skill levels are invited to play this growing sport in a casual environment without a formal instructor. Pickleball, a blend of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, provides a fun and social way to stay active.

“Engaging in recreational activities like pickleball not only

promotes physical health but also fosters a sense of community. These sessions provide an excellent opportunity for residents of all ages to come together, have fun, and stay active. This fun sport has gained in popularity throughout our Town and we’re thrilled to see our parks filled with energy and camaraderie as more residents give it a try,” Councilman Imbroto said.

Students Harbor Good Will Toward The Earth

Seaford Harbor Elementary School students made a commitment together to help their planet. Kindergartners in Brooke DeSanto’s class were visited by their fifth grade buddies from Antonella Denk’s class for an Earth Day project on April 19.

The project was based on the Dr. Seuss book, “The Lorax,” which teaches children to treat the planet with kindness.

Kindergartners read the book and watched the movie before they were visited by their older friends. Together, kindergartners and fifth graders painted a globe, then added the face of the Lorax, the fictional character the book is named for. Each student then added a sentence explaining a way he or she can help the environment.

Throughout the school year, Ms. DeSanto’s and Ms.

Denk’s students have been getting together twice a month for buddy activities. Often, they do crafts relating to holidays or seasons. Other times, students share their completed writing pieces with each other. Sometimes, they just grab a book and read together.

“The kindergartners look up to the fifth graders,” Ms. Denk said, “and the fifth graders love helping them.”

United States Navy Blue Angels, To Headline 20th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show

Bethpage Federal Credit Union and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are pleased to announce the final performer line-up for the much-anticipated 20th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, taking place on Saturday, May 25, 2024 and Sunday, May 26, 2024, from 10 AM – 3 PM.

The United States Navy Blue Angels, which headlined the very first Bethpage Air Show back in 2004, will return to Long Island to headline the 20th Anniversary show. This will be the Blue Angels’ 10th headliner performance for what has grown into one of the most respected air shows in the country.

Military performers joining the Blue Angels include the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, the A-10C Thunderbolt II Demo Team, and the U.S. Navy F-35C Demo Team. Civilian performers Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot; the world-famous Skytypers; Warbird Thunder Airshows; Farmingdale State College Flying Rams; Long Island’s own David Windmiller and the American Airpower Museum Warbirds.

To help celebrate the 20th anniversary show, organizers are giving away 30,000 commemorative U.S. Navy Blue Angels signed posters to fans attending the practice show on Friday, May 24th, and the weekend show on Saturday, May 25th and Sunday, May 26th.
